Michael Jackson's Thriller: The Icon
Michael Jackson Michael Jackson produced an album called Thriller in 1982, where the genre was pop rock & R&B. Michael Jacksons music underlies his emotions and Thriller was ground breaking and electrifying. “He is a song writer who sets the beat for a decade and a dancer who is the fanciest on the street.” (Borsman, Jos. Michael Jackson: The Icon. Lulu Press, 2011.) Michael Jacksons album Thriller is breathtaking by the lyrics and tempo mixed with emotion and the different types of genre put into each song. Michael Jackson was instrumental in bringing concepts of love and sadness to the lyrics of popular music songs from his Thriller album such as, “Baby be Mine” and “The girl is mine.” When Michael sings the lyrics of his songs, he puts so much emotion into each one. Michael expressed his emotion in the songs labeled above by expressing how he felt about the girl he loved. He expresses his feelings by certain moods in the songs and certain words are used. The key words in the songs above are “let me hold you” and “you are the future I desire.” These keywords deal with his love and expresses how much he loves her. Another set of words from another song is “but we both cannot have her” and “so it’s one or the other.” These keywords deal with sadness, because he expresses how much he can’t have her and she must choose one. …show more content…
When the tempo is slow, then he tends to express his sadness for a girl. If the tempo is upbeat, then he expresses how happy he tends to be with the girl or how happy he is in general. An example of some songs is “Billie Jean” and “The Lady in My Life.” Billie Jean has an upbeat tempo in which he expresses that “Billie Jean” was groupies he and his brothers got involved with during Jackson 5. It represents a lot of girls. The song “The Lady in My Life” is about a lady who he feels emotions towards. Michael Jackson’s songs tend to by upbeat and have funky fusions of rock, disco, and

George Nelson, who wrote a biography about the musical career of Michael Jackson in 2010, discussed the impact of the song and how it helped influence a future song which became known as “Beat It” just a few years later. The song “Beat It” was produced and created by Jackson and Quincy in 1982. According to the biography, Quincy who is the investigator of the song was inspired by the 1979 hit “My Sharona” to help create the song. The biography continues on by saying that “The Knack was at one-album wonder roundly disliked by most rock critics, and the era abounded with countless other pop rock hits from which to draw” (p. 1). With the help of Michael Jackson’s voice, as well as Quincy’s musical expertise, they were able to create the song together. When Jackson released the demo, no guitars or other instruments were used. The only thing available to attract listeners was the sound of Jackson’s unique voice. Although the two songs are very different, it is interesting to look at how one song highly affected and launched the career of a major pop…

This influences his singing and dancing because if he was dumb, deaf or paralysed then there would be no possibility for his singing or dancing. To sing you have to have a voice and the ability to hear music to learn it or no amount of training can help you, to dance you need to have the ability to move. However his ability to use it to sing and dance could also be down to nurture as it can be taught. You can have a voice and the ability to move and dance and still not know how to use it to sing and dance, this would need to be taught. Symbolic meaning for The Kiss is you see a mother washing and taking care of her daughter. Her mom is cleaning her, she relies on her mom to wash her, protect her, etc. You can see that the artist was feeling this in the time he was writing this. Or he has felt this in the past in his childhood. Everybody has been there before, having someone take care of them. In the song “I’ll Be”, just by the title you can tell that he is wanting to be something to someone. Just by the title you can tell that they both are trying to be something to someone. You can tell this from the song, by either the title, sound, tone, etc. Just like the painting it shows more in depth of how the musician was feeling when he was writing this or what happened in the past. There are a number of horror movies that come out each year. It seems that movie goers are fascinated with the gore and brutality that comes with this genre. Each movie has its own individual plots, but there remains a “monster”, the character that inspires fear and brings suspense. The monster is what makes each movie unique. One of these is Michael Myers from the Halloween franchise. Michael Myers or better recognized as the man with the white mask, is the most misunderstood villain in my opinion. He was committed to a sanitarium as a kid for the murder of his older sister. After fifteen years, the villain escapes and starts his killing spree on, you guessed it, Halloween. What haunts me is not the fact that he is a killer, but that there is little to no background on what made him in to the monster he is.…

From the time he began his career to his untimely death, Michael Jackson will be known as one of the best entertainers of all time. He is most noted for his exhilarating live concerts and performances that left his fans screaming for more. Michael Jackson set the standard for future Super Bowl Halftime Shows when he debuted in 1993 with his performance of ‘Heal the World’ where 3,500 local children participated in his uplifting message of love and humanity. In 1987, Jackson began his “Bad World Tour” listing 123 concerts in 15 countries and as a result became known as the biggest and most successful tour of all time. As Jackson set the standard for future artists to incorporate theatrics and expression in their performances, he always felt the responsibility to give his fans a show that appealed to their five senses. Not only were live performances a staple in the life of Jackson, but he is well known for fundamental changes to the world of music video. He was a music pioneer who never stopped pushing for what he believed in. He fought for equality in race relations, ending global poverty, and the incorporation of dance expression through his videos. The synergy that Jackson’s “Thriller” and “Beat It” videos brought to the music culture was foreshadowed by racial prejudice until record sales reflected people’s excitement about the “video virus.” Thriller came about just as MTV was emerging and was his first big step towards his music video era. “[Jackson] made music videos that were movies and changed the genre of what a music video was. He was able to open that…

There are many contrasts in the song that reveal the social issues that concerned Jackson. People without food, especially starving children, are mentioned in the song: “I see kids in the street, with not enough to eat”. The problem of homelessness and people with not enough money to borrow or loan is also discussed: “There are some with no home, not a nickel to loan”. This is in contrast to Jackson himself, who is of course wealthy enough to own: “Could it really be me pretending that they’re not alone”. Ironically, though the song is full of imagery of mirrors and reflections, it is Jackson who is unable to see. Early in the song, he sings: “Who am I to be blind, pretending not to see their needs”. Therefore, the journey he takes in the song is from blindness to being able to see the harsh realities of the world, as well as his own irresponsibility.…

    American Icon

If you look in your copy of Webster's English Dictionary under the I's, you will find the definition for the word "icon." An icon is simply an "image or representation of one who is the object of great attention or devotion; an idol" (Webster's 90). Skipping a few words down, you can find that an idol is "an image used as an object of worship" It takes much to be worshiped. Throughout time, America's pop-culture has been filled with icons of each generation, such as Babe Ruth or Elvis Presley. These icons represent a dream hidden within each of us – the dream, though not easily achieved, is to become extraordinarily successful, no matter the circumstances of your origin. Oddly, as if icon status is not enough, Americans seem to have given each of the few individuals who are exceptionally successful nick-names, proclaiming their superiority over the rest of us, such as Ruth's "Sultan of Swat," or Presley's "King of Rock." As far as pop music goes, there is another individual who has been worshiped in America for many years. With supreme talent and success, like all of the others icons, this person has been given a name of superiority above the rest. This person is Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson has become the icon we know him as today by achieving two accomplishments. He fulfilled the American Dream-to become successful in spite of his humble beginning-by way of his extraordinary talent. Secondly, he has stayed fresh for so many years, increasing his pop-icon status, by constantly reinventing himself. Only through these two achievements could he have become "The King of Pop."…

His creation of dance movement was closely intertwined with his creation of music. In his movement creation, he not only goes with the music, in some cases, he goes against the music as well, giving diversity to the fusion of music and dance. He varies his movements and music in terms of rhythm, for example syncopations, or differing emphasis in music and movements. For example, he chooses to do many short and sharp movements during the silence in the music. His accented movements are usually done along with the bass beat of the drums in his music but sometimes, he chooses to leave out certain accents and hit only some of them. On the other hand, sometimes when there are many accents in his music, he chooses to do the opposite with his movements, changing to the smooth style of his dance rather than the accented style. His choreography also catered very aptly to the lyrics and content of his songs, exemplified by the movements that likened to zombies choreographed for the song "Thriller". This is an example of versatility in his choreography to suit his music and probably was an added factor to success. Such an integration of choreographic movements and music allows the essence of Michael Jackson's style, both in music and dance, to stand out and complement one another at the same time.…
