Police, courts, and the judicial branch enforce laws and punish transgressors. The capability and fairness of the “justice” system, however, is not always effective. Members of the court and police men are humans with varied backgrounds and beliefs. It is difficult to have no prejudice and bias whatsoever when judging offenders of the law. A prime example of discrimination by law enforcers is the Ferguson riots in 2015. An African American teenager was shot by a Caucasian police officer. The incident led to “riots and tumults” between two diverse racial groups, which Paine identifies as nonexistent. America’s justice system works to ensure equality and unity, but the system in turn forces people to make debatable…
Human rights are believed to be universal within our nation. But is it really universal if others are given exclusive rights? This paper will focus on the human rights violations of African-Americans within the United States, as well as explore units of organizations and legislative branches of Government that are working towards solving such issues. African - American human rights are violated in several ways, including but not limited to employment opportunities, mass incarceration rates, police brutality, and unfair trials which will be further discussed to paint a picture of how the criminal justice system operates. Individuals within the African - American communities are stopped and frisked for no apparent reason, whether they are walking…
On Feb. 26. 2012, Trayvon Martin, 17, an unarmed black teenager walking back with Skittles and an iced tea he'd picked up at 7-Eleven, and George Zimmerman, a white Hispanic neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford, Florida in a community gated housings. (Michael Pearson & Greg Botelho, 2012). Moments before Trayvon was shot and killed, he was on his cellphone talking with a 16 year old girl (girlfriend). "He said this man was watching him, so he put his hoodie on. He said he lost the man."("Trayvon martin final," 2012) She asked him to run but he refused and said he was going to walk fast. Zimmerman 28 years old hispanic men, who was armed called the Sanford Police Department to report Martin behavior as suspicious, stating that he was probably on drugs and staring at the homes in the rain. Eventually, Martin ran and Zimmerman followed him. Soon enough, they face each other and a witness stated that there was a physical condent and heard screaming from one of them asking for help. Durring the tussle Zimmerman was the one asking for help which lead him to shoot Martin in his chest. It was bloody fight before the shooting. "About 7:30 p.m. Zimmerman told the officer he shot Martin in self-defense." (CNN Wire Staff, 2012).…
The case of victim or culprit Michael Brown a young man who lost his life. Something happened between this boy and the police officer in the officer’s car. Was the victim mistreated by the officer causing him to run away? Or was the officer wrongly accusing the boy when he approached the vehicle. What events lead up to the officer getting out of his vehicle and shooting that many bullets at this young man? The only way we would have known for sure is if the officer in question was wearing a body cam.…
Pantaleo and his ignorance of Garner’s obvious cries for help as an act of racism on the part of…
Michael Brown had no most-serious felony convictions or pending cases. Dorian Johnson, witness to Michael Brown getting shot, has been accused of lying in the past upon several occasions. This makes him to be a bad witness for this case, good for the officer’s case though.…
“Do NOT move!” “What do you think you are doing?” BANG!! These are some of the word said by Officer Ferguson during the scuffle with 18-year old Michael Brown. Some may say it was a matter of race, while others say it was a matter of self-defense. No matter what a black man was shot by a white officer and that cannot be changed. Well, why not stun Brown with pepper spray or taze him, some say. At this time Ferguson felt that his pepper spray would not be a help and did not have his tazer. The only other option he had was his gun. Now there are to different stories circulating around the news and other social media. One is that Michael Brown Calmly put his hands up and walked slowly away from the officer looking to cause no harm, but the other story is that Brown seemed to think he could overpower the officer and reached to still his weapon after being confronted. Two completely different stories told by two completely different types of people. The people on Michael Brown’s side believe he calmly surrendered which makes the case seem more like a race issue, while people defending Officer Ferguson believe he had every right to fire at Brown.…
There are many people that oppose my opinion. Many people believe that officers do not use excessive force, that what happens is not police brutality and that these officers are only doing their job. There is no doubt that some are doing exactly that, their job, but when there is an officer that is shooting at a young man several times is unnecessary. This happened to Michael Brown, according to Darren Wilson, the officer that shot him, he fit the description a suspect who had stolen cigarettes. The officer pulled over Michael Brown and his friend. Michael Brown got away and the officer chased after him and many witnesses said that Brown was surrendering to the officer, while others said that Brown was charging toward the officer, either way,…
I have a huge issue with the sentencing of Brock Turner, a former student of Stanford University. Turner was charged and convicted of three counts of felony sexual assault. He sexually assaulted a 22 year-old-woman who was unconscious and intoxicated behind a dumpster on the college campus. At the end, the judge sentenced turner to six months in a county jail and three years of probation. He also must register as a sex offender, and participate in a sex-offender treatment program. Turner is scheduled to be released tomorrow from a county jail – three months early for good behavior.…
An injustice in need of correction- racism Society has allowed it to destroy, gnaw, and fester minds Our country was founded on white supremacy The idea of another race to be inferior And for what? Skin color Trayvon Martin Alton Sterling Tamir Rice Sandra Bland All examples of individuals who’s worth has been cast aside A change must be made This movement is…
Coming from someone who you can easily catch walking around with a drink and candy in hand while wearing a hoodie on I have never once thought I might look suspicious and end up murdered from these actions. Luckily, I am white and not the main attraction for suspicious activity as those who are black. This common assumption really bothers me, because there are bad people out there and there are good people as well, but the color of their skin doesn’t define if you’re good or bad. Trayvon Martin never showed any suspicious behavior to proceeded Zimmerman to think he was about to partake in a violent crime. Crime is a violation of a norm that has been codified into law. No matter, what the ruling was there is no way to go around the fact that…
This article goes deep into the back-story of someone one may not want to hear about, this someone being Darren Wilson. No one knows his whole story, and no one near him is talking about the incident that has occurred, the shooting of Michael Brown. Wilson works in the Jennings, Missouri police department. This particular department has been reported to have questionable credibility. What kind of person would one expect to be involved with this kind of case? Darren Wilson’s past hardships and all the tense conditions that already exist between officers and their communities played a great role in the incident that took place in Ferguson, Missouri and why there are so many people Wilson’s his side.…
Michael Brown was an 18 year old black man who was shot and killed by police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri 08/9/2014. Michael had intensions to go to college with no previous criminal record. The death of Brown sparked subsequent events in Ferguson and became a national controversy touching on much larger national issues of race, justice, and police violence. This event grew even more national attention when police reacted to protesters, even those acting peacefully, with military-grade equipment such as armored vehicles, tear gas, rubber bullets, and sound cannons. Ties between local residents and their government arose again when heard the investigation into the shooting, inherently secretive grand jury proceedings and subsequent reactions which controlled by mostly whit politicians despite Ferguson’s majority black population. One of the main reasons this shooting grew national attention was the fear commonly held by many parents is that black lives matter less, particularly in the face of increasingly heavily armed police who carry tremendous legal freedom.…
With the widespread national media coverage of the Treyvon Martin shooting, facts can be easily misconstrued and bring about prejudices on the case in its entirety and also George Zimmerman. What was tragic incident turned into a highly publicized phenomenon. Facts and specifics of the case should be private and the amount of time from indictment to trial is detrimental to a fair trial, a sixth amendment right under the United States Constitution. The circumstances surrounding Martin’s death, combined with the initial decision not to charge Zimmerman after detainment and questioning by police, along with a query and examination of Florida’s “Stand Your Ground”…
With a controversial topic at hand, the case of Trayvon Martin and the real facts as to what happened the night he was shot come to conclusion. The Trayvon Martin Tragedy, exists as the undigestable story of an adolescent African American male who is shot upon by a neighborhood watch captin by the name of Geroge Zimmerman with nothing to defend himself but a bag of Skittles, an Arizona Iced Tea, and a cell phone. With factual eveidence, witnesses, and 911 phone call recordings we uncover wether Zimmerman shot Martin as anything but self defense. Due to the fact that Trayvon was walking back to his home while on the phone with his girlfriend, he wasn’t stirring up any causes for trouble. The act of his suspiousness was merely upon judgement and race. Zimmerman was not truthful in his statements during the trial and begins to show several slip ups in evidence and reasonable explanations.…
