Miami Dade Reflection
Never would I have expected one of my first experiences in class at Miami Dade College to have excited me as much as this class has so far. One of the reasons I feel so ecstatic to begin this class is the loving vibe that the class throws off. This class isn’t just a class you go to, do your work, and go about your day outside of the class walls, it is a class that is intentional. You cannot leave this class without it impacting your life in some beautiful way. This class excites me because we will be participating in the WOW Center. Contrary to usual class regimen, I will be teaching others, while teaching myself. This class is here to expand our minds, and not just to assign busy work. Through serving at the WOW Center, we will be learning

Rosie was the proud owner of an Eastern Box Turtle! Excitement radiated from her as she read through the Wikipedia pages and turtle forums I had found. She could not believe how much there was to learn about the baby turtle she had found in her backyard. After an hour of passionate debate on the diet of the Eastern Box Turtle, she left the lab to brag about what she had learned. I had come to the senior center expecting to teach some lethargic retirees how to create email accounts, but I left reminded of the unbridled joy that comes from learning and teaching. As I have progressed through high school I have used Rosie’s infectious energy as inspiration in my life. Her enthusiasm has pushed me to go past the curriculum and share my passions…

I am especially glad that I have been able to see how this course will compliment my plans to become a primary teacher, with specific examples being used within school settings. I am writing on behalf of Titilayo Okoror for Binghamton University Undergraduate Research Mentoring award. I have known Dr. Okoror for three years now as a professor and mentor. My first introduction to Dr. Okoror was as a student in both Global Health and Immigrant and Refugee Health courses. During my time as her student, Dr. Okoror’s course quickly became my most thought-provoking and enlightening classes of my university experience. From her lesson plans, teaching of materials and leading of class discussion, her classes were informative, compelling and most importantly life changing. Life-changing may seem like an exaggeration, however, Dr. Okoror constructs course using interesting materials and allows such comprehensive conversation amongst her students that you leave each classroom with some type of new knowledge that often festers for my days, even weeks and expands your knowledge and typically changes your previous mindset about the way you view a certain subject. I don’t believe many course hold this same type of effect on students.…

One day, during this month of May, I myself was going on this trip to orientation. As I waited in the lobby of the Ferg, I was called into my small group session, it happened that in my group were seven other students who were all joined together by the number on our name tags, two. All of the students were freshmen, coming to The University of Alabama for the first time, and when the group leaders rounded us together, we all conversed as we walked to Gorgas 205 to begin our orientation journey.…

The tools we learn in these classes teach us to be kind, compassionate, and nurturing to all not just as a scholar practitioner but as a human with impeccable morals and ethics. My philosophy as a scholar-practitioner is epistemology. I believe that we develop awareness from the world we live in by the way we interact within it (Blaikie, 2004). I believe we are molded and formed by what we observe or what we are exposed to during the growth of our life. I believe that it is vital to be acquainted with the world around us by being active in it, experiencing life, and gaining knowledge (Blaikie, 2004). Therefore, I think we are the future leaders of social change; we are the face of Walden University as we go out…
