MGMT101 Week 1 Post
Being in charge of soldiers is a subject that is known oh so very well. In this situation I would feel as if an AAR on my leadership would be necessary. An AAR is an after action review which is a simple option for facilitating anything that has been done even leadership. It works by bringing together a team to discuss a task, event, activity or project, in an open and honest fashion. After an AAR has been completed I would be able to implement the changes that they would request for me to make and see if my workers become more responsive to me. I feel personal power is the most important type simply because Personal Power is internal to you. It is the skill set that earned you that important job title or rank, it is the knowledge you gained studying and training hard to meet all the requirements to fulfill your position. It is the ability to stay cool under pressure, it is the can do mindset. It is having outstanding character, resilience, persistence, patience, and intelligence. Because these things are internal to you, they cannot be taken away from you. Positional power is the act of using the title given to get things done. It is a Squad leader that has 15 soldiers underneath him that he still has to make do things. When you use personal power to get things done the soldiers will be willing and you won’t have to make them do anything. I just faced this situation recently where a SM ranked higher than myself tried to use his rank and position to do things that did not meet regulations. I kept an open mind and simply told him what could be done and his alternatives.

Leadership in war time is a dynamic process. No one particular commander is exposed to the same challenge and implements a textbook solution. While leadership doctrine is provided to commanders, it serves more as a guideline than anything else. This situation can be clearly seen in the leadership and management styles of General Frank Savage and Colonel Keith Davenport. Both of these individuals were faced with the challenge of leading a Bomber Group during World War II. Grossly undermanned and equipped, their directive from command was to give maximum effort and fly their assigned missions until replacement aircraft and personnel could be brought up to the front.…

Like all military officers, I was trained and groomed to be a leader from the time I raised my right hand and took the oath of office. The most important contribution to my success was the emphasis I placed on putting junior member’s needs before mine. AbstractThe Army uses all four functions of management through a Chain of Command. All leaders throughout the military use at least one function, but multiple leaders working together covers all functions. Always someone is planning, organizing, leading, or controlling. The reason the United States Military is so effective is because leadership and management always try to stay a step ahead. The rank structure provides a guideline to how much a soldier manages. More rank brings more responsibility, more respect, and more use of each function. Though not all functions are needed to be a manager, a good manager does need all four. The Chain of Command is the best example to show leadership, management, and the four functions - plan, organize,…
