Leadership and Organizational Behavior Project Proposal

Overview of Organization

The organization I will be discussing in my final project is JCPenney. JCPenney is traded as JCP on the New York Stock Exchange. JC Penney was founded by James Cash Penney over 100 years ago. JC Penny bases it principles on the Golden Rile: treat others the way you would want to be treated - Fair and Square. JC Penney is a retail store whose main focus is to create a better customer shopping experience each time they visit the store.

JC Penney has been plagued with high employee turnovers because of environmental factors and company culture and values. Management behavior has also played a significant role in employee turnover rates. The main reasons cited for high employee turnover rates for retailers are low pay rates, not enough working hours and no career prospects. Employees are expected to work before and after holidays and management very seldom listened to complaints of redundancy and poor training issues.

JC Penney has improved the store's image. The business has attempted to increase the attractiveness of the organization. Attractiveness is an indicator of how employees view the organization. If an employee has a positive assessment versus a negative one, then they will perceive the apparel retail store as an attractive organization to work for.

I am a former sales associate of JC Penney. I began working for the organization in 2006. I was not offered a benefits package nor did not have a say in what department I would be the best fit for. I was given a couple of days training for cash register duties. However, I was not given customer service training or told what was expected of me in order to provide superior customer service. At the time JC Penney failed to recognize it's biggest asset, its customer.

When JC Penney provide services to customers, they rely solely on store employees. Store employees have the

    Ron Johnson Failure

Ron Johnson failed during his 17-month stint as CEO at JC Penny. A failure so epic that experts and critics now question whether the 111-year-old retail chain will survive at all. Unlike what many experts are saying, I believe Johnson’s vision would have been successful if he had just avoided five critical but common branding mistakes. Sadly, he made brand culture mistakes he avoided earlier in his career at Apple and Target. Upon leaving Apple to take the helm at JC Penney, Johnson attempted to rebuild the retailer's brand by remaking everything from the pricing to the merchandise to the overall store layout and design. Johnson’s vision featured trendier brands and a more intimate boutique-like shopping experience to replace their standard…

Discuss too the impact of such decisions on the morale of the employees.…

Weaknesses: Before the new retailing strategy J.C. Penney would have constant sales on most items. Now with consistent prices items are reduced in price infrequently which might scare off customers who came for the extremely low sales prices. The new unique layout which is unlike any other store might confuse customers because they are not used to such a radical new design. Several years will be needed to completely re-do every J.C Penney around the country. During this time sales will drop due to people not being reached with advertising about the new sales approach. Sales will also be lower until brand loyalty to the new brands brought in has been established. Customers have been alienated due to prices being raised and sales being reduced. The elimination of coupons has also turned many customers away from J.C Penney.…

The Moral Foundations Self-Assessment Exercise Part 1 Everybody has his/her core values. These core values may develop or change gradually over a lifetime but in most cases they are stable and enduring. I think one of the most important values that help me navigate through daily experiences and life as a whole is fairness. I think I inherited the value from my mother. She always reminds me to treat everybody fairly. I don’t think I can discriminate anybody because of his background, such as belief, class, and poverty. As I grow up, I find that fairness can make life harmonious. Treating friends fairly prevent them from envying each other. Treating group members fairly can make the group work go well. It also helps members well collaborate with each other and work hard because it makes them equally important to the group.…
