In order to capital my strength in area of self-monitoring skills, I will set SMART goals to myself. That is goal that are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timed. Studies has shown with the setup of SMART goals, it will direct my attention, increase my effort, give me persistence and lastly guide me to be specific about my plan(Latham&Locke, 2007). This ultimately motivates me and increases my chance of success with the plan. Further more, I would like to adapt the concept of Small Wins which is breaking a large task into small detail components. Studies has shown by adapting Small Wins strategy, it consistently motivates people through showing them progress thereby induct consistent high performance(Vervoort, 2012).According to the book Organizational Behaviour Understanding and Managing Life at Work, networking can be break into the following five component maintaining contacts, socializing, engage in professional activities, participating in community activities and increasing internal visibility(John&Saks, 1996). The plan I will be adapting will focus on only maintaining contacts and participating in community activities since other activities is only achievable once I land my job. For maintaining professional contacts, I will go to one of the networking events offered by school, workplace or CMA organization once every month and follow up after a day or two. For people who are willing to respond to my follow-up, I should establish contact with them. To do so, I should go through my professional contact list every week and send my greeting to 1/12 of my contact lists. Therefore I can go through the entire list every three months. In terms of community activities, I should participate to these volunteer events sponsor by the large corporation such as CIBC Run for the Cure once per month and establish contact with important people I meet. That way, not only my plan is specific, measurable and timed, I am also able to track

A few years ago, my company decided to hire a man of Middle-Eastern decent to fill an open project engineering position. The gentlemen exemplified what the company wanted and needed in an employee. He had the educational requirements, work history, and years of experience in our manufacturing field. He shined during the interview process and stood head and shoulders above the other candidates. My company wasted no time making the man a reasonable offer and he gladly accepted soon afterwards. Within a few months after his arrival, the gentleman was tasked to lead a project to install an aseptic blend operation. The aseptic blend operation had some strict personal hygiene requirements. One critical requirement was no employee could don a beard when working in the blend area. Ironically, the gentleman sported a full lengthy beard in which he wore proudly as part of his Middle Eastern culture. Eventually, an unexpected ethical dilemma was on the rise. My company was caught between asking the man to shave his beard, assign another engineer to the project, or amend the…

While reading Chapter 2 on The Role of Government in Policy Making, I noticed that in the text it stated that “all fields of practice are affected by the social and organizational policy made by judicial decisions.” (Donald E. Chambers and Kenneth R. Wedel. Published by Allyn and Bacon pg.35). The YWCA provides women and children with several different services. It is vital that the organization is careful of what they are doing with their clients and observe the policies for these social programs. The judicial branch of the government has a lot of power over these social programs and can completely discontinue the program under certain circumstances. This is done in order to keep the organization consistent with court orders. “The judicial branch restricts or expands the power of government administrators and officials so that they are consistent with past court decisions, with governmental principles, and (sometimes) with the fundamental constitutional rights of citizens.” (Donald E. Chambers and Kenneth R. Wedel. Published by Allyn and Bacon). The laws that are put in place for this organization or organizations similar to the YWCA can influence the decision making and its day to day operations by a simple change in law. A change in law could mean that the requirements have been altered or changed and in order to service their clients properly, there are guidelines that need to be met. “The judiciary both creates anew and reshapes old social policy. (Donald E. Chambers and Kenneth R. Wedel. Published by Allyn and Bacon). I found that the YWCA has to only engage in activities related to its mission or purpose. “The Association may not engage in any activities that do not further the Mission or its purposes as set forth in the Articles of Incorporation and these Bylaws.” (http://www.cortlandywca.org/pdf/ywcabylaws07.pdf) Some of the laws read were very particular about the dos and don’ts of the organization. The information read shows that these laws…

During reconstruction, the meaning of freedom suited many different types of interpretation; the perception of freedom between former slaves and their slaves masters were very contradictory. To begin with, African-Americans had suffered severe abuse over those years of slavery, so to them, the meaning of freedom was basically a hope that in the future, they won’t experience all kind of punishment and exploration that they have been experienced so far. Besides that, formers slaves were demanding equal civil and political rights. In the same way, they valued their freedom by establishing their own schools and churches, reuniting families that were separated under slavery and seeking financial dependence. Foner (2014) supports the same argument: “Blacks relished the opportunity to demonstrate their liberation from the regulation, significant and trivial, associated with slavery. They openly held mass meeting and religious services free of white supervision” (p. 557) . In addition, Foner (1014) also found “Former slaves’ ideas of freedom, like those of rural people throughout the world, were directly related to landownership” (p. 560) . On other hand, their slaves masters’ perception of freedom was different. For example, most Southerners reacted the emancipation with dismay, according to Foner (2014) , Southern leaders didn’t want to accept reality “Freedom still meant hierarchy and mastery; it was a privilege not a right, a carefully defined legal status rather than an open-ended entitlement” (p. 561) .…

Slavery was a central institution in American society during the late 18th century and was accepted as normal and even applauded as a positive thing by many white Americans. However, this broad acceptance of slavery, which was never agreed to by African Americans, began to be challenged in the Revolutionary Era. The challenge came from several sources, partly from “Revolutionary ideals, partly from a new evangelical religious commitment that stressed the equality of all Christians, and partly from a decline in the profitability of tobacco in the most significant slave region of Virginia and adjoining states” (Retrieved November 20, 2014, from http://www.ushistory.org/us/13d.asp).…

McDonald's has successfully created a brand/name for itself as the leading fast food retailer in the world. It is somewhat of impossibility for one to not come across a McDonald's with over 30,000 local restaurants in over 100 countries (McDonald's, 2011). Those restaurants are owned either by a franchise owner or a corporation; a percentage of all the earnings from a franchise owner, including a percentage from their annual revenue go to McDonald's.…
