In "Mexico," Cisneros uses long, elaborate, descriptive sentences to move from one memory of her hometown, or memory of her grandfather, to the next. This writing style helps deliver a very personal feeling to the audience; it makes the audience feel as if they could be there witnessing the balloon vendors bringing all of their unsold balloons back home, or feeling the soft, Kleenex-like money. This type of writing is called syntax. The use of syntax is extremely important to writers, as it is used with diction to develop the mood, tone, and atmosphere of a story. Without these critical elements, a story would not be worth reading.
