Method Acting and 1950's American Politics and Culture
Throughout the twentieth century, method acting had been experimented with and practiced in the United States. The method had derived from Stanislavski's "system" at the Moscow Art Theatre and was then given its own identity by method pioneers in the Group Theatre, Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler and Elia Kazan. Through the early 1900's, the method had begun to gain recognition in American theatre, but swiftly attained considerable prominence on the stage and screen during the 1950's. Although method had been practiced prior in the United States, it rapidly emerged during this era. Along with other art forms such as poetry and painting -- performance -- through the use of the method, distinctly deviated from previous approaches to its respective craft. With the end of the Second World War, America institutionally focused on family-centered principles, the fulfillment of the "American Dream" and the importance of patriotism through popular media. "During the 50's occurred…society's first effort to face…the affluent society of suburbia, the new medium of television…new attitudes toward the discussion of sexuality and the political effort to include more groups in the definition of what it means to be American"(Braudy, 192). The social and political environment of the time reflect two differing views of the decade; while middle class families thrived and patriotic morale was high, mistrust grew surrounding Communist Russia.     In the 1950s the United States was marked by economic growth and an increase in manufacturing and home construction due to the post WWII economic boom. The Cold War also began during this time frame and brought with it many conflicts that helped create the proliferation of a politically conservative environment throughout the country. The fear of communism resulted in many Congressional hearings and prevalence of an anti communist sentiment. During this time period society was characterized by a spirit of conformity and conservatism.     In What We Really Miss About the 1950s, author Stephanie Coontz explores the infatuation that many Americans have with the 1950s and attempts to set the record straight regarding the various positives and negatives that are associated with the decade. She begins by explaining that there is actually a great deal of merit toward the idea of the 50s being an excellent decade in which to live, but not necessarily for the reasons that initially come to mind (Coontz 33). This piece discusses how economic improvement and the stability of the average family are very appealing to those who look back in nostalgia. The whole nation felt as if there was an overall improvement in the quality of life from the previous decade, which in turn brought about a sense of optimism in the average American home. Coontz explains, “What most people really feel nostalgic about has little to do with internal structure of the 1950s families. It is the belief that the 1950s provided…a greater feeling of hope for a family’s long-term future, especially for its young” (34). That sense of hope and optimism is identified by Coontz as something that everyone would love to possess, and is a major reason why the 1950s seem so appealing. Coontz then goes on to identify the negatives associated with the decade, such as racism, sexism, and the fear of nuclear war. As with any period of time there are peaks and valleys, as well as neutral points that may serve some aesthetic purpose to certain readers who look back fondly upon the decade, all of which Coontz describes in detail. Overall, the audience is then left with an overview of the entire decade, which then allows the reader to make their own informed opinion about their feelings toward the decade.…

    It was November 18, 1918, the day WWI had officially ended. The last cry of help had been heard and peace was supposedly coming to the United States or it had seemed. An ideological war which prompted mass paranoia had caused, among many other things, what would be known as the Red Scare (****).     After World War II, the United States faced a malevolent philosophical dispute that had spread from within itself. Chapter nine in Thinking Through the Past is titled “Pop Culture as History: The War Comes Home” because it identifies America’s disposition over the subject of communism during the Cold War era. Historian Stephen J. Whitfield writes his secondary source entitled, “The Culture of the Cold War” which presents a detailed analysis pertaining to the lives of Americans on both sides of the political spectrum of anti-communism during the 1950s in United States.
