Mesh Of Me
While creating my work, I intend to focus on how music influences movement. I will explore how movement changes or stays the same with different styles of music, and how you can juxtapose movement qualities with the various qualities presented in the music. A Mesh of Me will be heavily influenced by all my favorite styles of music, thus creating an eclectic collage of who I am. In preparation for this choreographic process, I will conduct a physical investigation of movement. I will explore my habits as a dancer, focusing on common movements and qualities I use. I will attempt to break these habits in an effort to challenge myself to further develop my movement vocabulary, yet I also wanted to showcase these tendencies because they do contribute …show more content…
Working with the wide variety of faculty that is available to each of us, I have gained an incredible amount of new knowledge, not only about my body and myself as a dancer, but also about the art of dance itself. With the help of faculty and my peers, I am beginning to find connectedness between my long limbs and my trunk, and I have a new understanding of where my body is in space while dancing. I would now consider myself a “smarter” dancer than I was before. I now have a greater understanding of how to use my momentum, when to release and when to engage certain muscle groups for the sake of efficiency, and how to easily move in and out of the floor. I know, with more time here, those qualities will only continue to improve. Daily, I feel my body, and my technique, improving significantly, and I know I’m training my body and mind to do some wonderful things in the future. My body and dance technique is not the only aspect of me that has grown during my college experience. My perception of dance as an art form has also evolved since I started here at SHSU. Dances I once enjoyed watching, I no longer do. However, many forms of dance I had never seen before coming to this university. For instance, I had never seen or done modern before, and now I do it almost every day. College has given me a greater understanding of the true depth of this art form and a larger

I can't dance. Most of the time, I shy away from dancing. But surprisingly, I have a picture of students giving a dance performance at Grinnell. A simple picture with enthusiastic dancers that I received during a college talk captures what I want out of college: a place where I can let go of my inhibitions and find fulfillment in anything that strikes my fancy, somewhere I can immerse myself in the multitude of opportunities and activities available and experience the magic captured by that picture.…

The propensity I have for dance does not come naturally. Over the past few years, I have spent relentless time and energy in an attempt to perfect every aspect of my dancing ability. Although far from such accomplishments, I have noticed a steady trek of improvement as time progresses. I relinquish all insecurities and give paramount effort every time I enter a class; recently, a similar trend has occurred in my peers. The more I push myself to achieve greatness, the more they do also. I hope the younger team members have seen this ideal exemplified in me through our time together, applying this mindset even when I am no longer there.…

One day while I was dancing to a record in my living room, my mother’s friend who was a Spanish dancer noticed me and encouraged me to start taking dance lessons. So I began taking lessons from a prestigious dancer, Paco Casino who was related to Rita Hayworth. Before I knew it, dancing was changing my life in a blink of an eye and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. As I was turning nine, my phase as a Spanish dancer soon took a shift to staring in dramatic radio shows.…

At three years old, I never understood much. What three-year-old would? I never had the choice for where my life was going, for that was all up for my mother to decide. I can honestly say that her decision to put me in dance was the most powerful change for me. Sixteen years later, I can still remember my very first ballet piece, “Pretty Powder Puffs.” There was well over thirty tiny ballerinas in the “Pretty Powder Puffs”piece, and only a small fraction of them continued dancing later on in life. I was one of the lucky ones to never stop dancing.…

When I turned three, my mom signed me up for my first ballet class, and I loved it. Moving along to the music brought me joy and fulfillment. My liking for it has gradually grown into a passion. But over the years, I have also noticed a stigma for extreme competitiveness and perfectionism. Something that originally began as a form of worship has transformed into a celebration of the superficial and frivolous. Dancing often creates many concerns for young performers.…

Jiri Kylian’s dances are eclectic, inspired by folk, aboriginal, neo-classical and romantic classical dance, creating a variety of movements. Jiri Kylian’s inspiration from a number of sources results in his dances using dynamics, space and time in a unique way. This style of choreography is carried through all the ‘black and white’ ballets. Sharp percussive movements are followed by smooth elegant lines, which soon morph into a series of twitches, spasms, jerks and vibratory movements. This contrast in movement qualities, creates dynamics which is prominent to Kylian’s choreography. ‘Falling angels’ and ‘No more play’ both…

Because I was always one of those kids that never felt comfortable doing any sport, when I discovered that I had a talent for dancing, I was overjoyed. I started dancing during my fifth grade year of school. Immediately I became infatuated with the art. Working very hard my sixth grade year enabled me to join my academy’s dance company. One day during my musical theatre class while doing a combo something wasn’t right. My right leg had a twinging pain and when I did the big kick at the end of the combo, I knew I had pushed myself too far. What should have been the beginning of a long dance career turned into a very long year and a half search of trying to find a way to heal whatever was wrong. It was an experience that I’ll never forget.…

    Dance Memoir

The atmosphere that existed within my dance studio was one so utterly supportive and positive, that my love for dance grew stronger. The girls that I spent hours each week with, became sisters to me. We were able to support one another in class, as well as within our personal lives. By spending so much time with such wonderful people, I’d like to think that I have become a better person. My time dancing at Miss Charity’s Shuffles and Chaînes has taught me how to love myself, and everything that makes me, me. It has taught me freedom of expression, and the value in making art out of what matters to me. It has taught me how to respect other opinions and ideas, even when they are different from my own. It has taught me the value in friendship, and that a healthy support system is the perfect thing to end a stressful day with. It has taught me discipline, kindness, teamwork, and many other valuable traits. The thought of leaving dance is one that I cannot fathom, and it is for that reason that I will try and keep it a part of my life as long as I see fit. I may not want to pursue a career in dance, but I can’t see myself abandoning something that has become a part of who I am. Without dance, I am not Taylor Ann Ruzewski, and I wouldn’t want to be anyone different that the person I am…

Thinking back upon the past thirteen years has really helped me to realize what I truly had gained as a student of the Kalashri School of Arts. Even from the very beginning, I restlessly looked forward to Sunday afternoons, impatient to learn new routines. I was so eager for class, that throughout the week itself, I would set aside thirty minutes each day to practice what I had been taught. I still remember how embarrassed I would feel whenever my dance guru, Ms. Bina Menon, would comment on how attentive I was or how apparent it was that I had practiced thoroughly during the week. I have to admit though; it always did make me secretly proud when Bina Aunty would compliment me. I recall my first performance rather perfectly, the exhilaration I…

Ever since I was young I remember dance always being one of those things that was always there when I needed it. Everyday I looked forward to going to class and working hard, doing my best to get better everyday. I officially started dancing when I was three, however, it wasn’t until I got to the age of around 10 or 11. This was about a year after I moved to Kansas City and when I just started going to the Kansas City Ballet. The whole experience changed my point of view completely over not just dance but ballet to. I would definitely not be where I am today if it wasn’t for moving to KCB.…

The idea of dance has always been interesting and a mystery to me. When I was younger, I used to participate in Indian dance performances for birthday parties, weddings and/or anniversaries. I was fairly decent and I remember that it gave me a sense of freedom. I loved to dance. It was a way of expressing my uniqueness. However, things changed, life moved on and the stress of it all hid those feelings for another lifetime. They remained hidden for the past four years here at UCR until now, my senior year. Now was the only time in my college career that I had time for anything other than major related, science-y courses. I was excited to take a class that didn’t involve four hour laboratory times or quizzes every week. I wanted to take a class that made me feel free. That’s when I remembered how dance made me feel when I was younger and Dance 005 seemed like the perfect fit.…

Since I was 4 years old I have been dancing at Bremerton Dance Center, this is where inspiration and motivation grew stronger throughout 13 years of dancing there. Majoring in dance would be a way to keep what shaped me into who I am today. Dance is a way to express how one feels through movement instead of words. For example, writing a written word how I feel is the hardest thing for me, but if I think of one emotion and put a dance move to it comes out faster. While moving through these emotions it’s a way to escape all other problems. I want to continue my journey and share it with others around me and inspire the people around me. When I went and visited the University of Idaho in June I felt as if the inspiration could be carried on into…
