Mercutio Rationale
Heart Project Rationale
Mercutio: Colors of the Heart In the drama, Romeo and Juliet, Mercutio is foil character for Romeo. In the play, each character faces many different obstacles on the course to finding true love. Some of them cannot be overcome, but must be dealt with. The five different obstacles Mercutio must face are condescension, sarcasm, disrespectfulness, foolishness, and compulsiveness. Condescension is the worst characteristic in Mercutio’s personality. It is represented by the color purple. In the time of Romeo and Juliet the color purple was synonymous with royalty because it was worn only by royalty. Mercutio is related to the prince, and he thinks that gives him a free pass to do anything he wants. This mindset leaves him incapable of having a relationship because the partner would never be, in Mercutio’s mind, an equal. Sarcasm is yet another bad aspect of Mercutio. It is represented by a white base with red, blue, and yellow dots. These are the traditional colors of a clown. Mercutio’s unfiltered and unrelenting sense of humor make it difficult to tell if he is being serious or not, and if he is, it is hard to take him seriously. How can you have a relationship with someone you cannot take seriously? Disrespectfulness is more or less a trait that can be changed or overcome, in a normal person. However, in Mercutio’s case it is an immovable, unchangeable, unstoppable force. It is engraved in his mind and his heart. His disrespect is and evil thing, like a dark entity living inside him. It is represented by black on the heart for that reason. His disrespectfulness is a disease of his heart, not just an enemy. No one would be or is attracted to Mercutio because of that. Foolishness is yet another one of the things that prohibit a relationship for Mercutio. His foolishness is often dangerous for himself and others. Yellow symbolizes caution, therefore foolishness is represented by yellow. Everyone is foolish to some degree or another,

    Mercutio's Speech

In Mercutio’s speech, he talks about a fantastical Queen Mab which depicts him as a very imaginative and spontaneous person. After Romeo reveals his dream, Mercutio begins to tease Romeo: “O, then I see Queen Mab hath been with you” (1.4.58). Mercutio comes up with a fictional character on the spot and then makes a long speech about her. He describes her as the fairies’ midwife and as smaller than the stone of a ring. This is something impossible since fairies and tiny women do not exist. The speech also includes details like “Her chariot is an empty hazelnut” (1.4.72) and “Through lovers’ brains, and then they dream of love” (1.4.76). More magical and extraordinary features that are not true in real life. Mercutio is able to invent an imaginary…

The tragedy Romeo and Juliet boasts a wide assortment of characters. Many of whom are often at odds with one another. Three characters in particular, Tybalt, Mercutio, and Benvolio, are three very different men, and are driven by impulses and their different characteristics. Tybalt is driven by his rage and craving for violence, Mercutio is driven by his friendship with Romeo, and Benvolio is often driven by his love for peace. But these men do share one common trait, loyalty. Tybalt, Mercutio, and Benvolio are loyal to their families and their friends without question and with great passion.…

In II-iv, Benvolio and Mercutio are talking together about Tybalt, when Romeo approaches. he joins in with them, and Mercutio bolsters his confidence by talking of his great skill with a sword. Here, we see Mercutio encouraging his friend in accepting a duel. Despite his joking side, Mercutio still recognises when there is someone in need, and rushes to help. In lines sixty-six to sixty-nine, he remarks: “if our wits run the wild-goose chase, I am done; for thou hast more of the wild goose in one of thy wits than, I am sure, I have in my whole five.” (Shakespeare) While this comment makes fun of Romeo and references his ditching them the night before, it also complements him in a guy way that girls will never understand, and reassures him that he still has good friends who will be by his side. The second place where Mercutio shows his sense of duty is in III-i, when he and benvolio are out in town on a hot summer’s afternoon. Tybalt Capulet comes along and tells Mercutio that he is challenging Romeo to a duel. Following the Prince’s threat that, in lieu of any more conflicts the offenders would be banished, Benvolio is anxious to move to a private place. However, Mercutio doesn’t listen. When Romeo arrives and refuses the duel, Mercutio steps up to fight. Once again, this shows us that Mercutio will stand up for what he believes is right, even if it brings large…

    Mercutio Humor

Mercutio is a very important character because he is the only obvious comedic force in the play. When Mercutio is making a joke the audience knows it, and usually laughs at his quick witted sense of humor. His sense of humor revolves mostly around punning on playing with words. The puns and jokes are usually sexually driven and very vulgar for the time period in which this play takes place. Two of the most notable instances of Mercutio's humor is when he meets the nurse and when he is trying to make Romeo angry by making fun of him over his infatuation with Rosaline after Romeo had met Juliet and had forgotten about Rosaline.…

In Romeo and Juliet, Mercutio and Benvolio are persuading Romeo into the party by pressuring him, “This wind you talk of blows us from ourselves./Supper is done, and we shall come too late” (II.IV.104-105). Romeo finally agrees to go in. This shows how he is heavily influenced by his peers since he follows them and gives in to peer pressure. Mercutio also tells him to keep an open mind about other girls, “You are a lover. Borrow Cupid’s wings/ and soar with them above a common bound” (I.IV.17-18). In other words, Mercutio is saying that instead of obsessing over Rosaline he should go look at prettier girls. Mercutio is leading Romeo into a trap that will lead to his death, but Romeo still goes in order to please his friends. As Valerie Ulene said, “They [teenagers] turn to friends for guidance and direction”(Ulene). This is what Romeo does since his parents do not support him while he is going through his…

    Romeo and Juliet

During the course of the play, Romeo acts in an extremely hasty, impulsive fashion and his actions revealed much of his personalities. When Shakespeare first introduces Romeo, he was deeply infatuated with Rosaline who is, in his eyes “too fair, too wise, wisely too fair” (1.1.215) and he said, “thou canst not teach me to forget [her]” (1.1.231). This was quickly proven false however when he fell in love with Juliet at the party. “O she doth teach the torches to burn bright! / It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night / As a rich jewel in an Ethiop’s ear- / beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear /…Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight! / For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night.” Romeo has already forgot all about his “fair” Rosaline in just a few minutes after he saw Juliet, awed by her beauty. This shows the audience that Romeo is a fickle but also romantic young man. Romeo is also shown as an affectionate and loyal friend to Mercutio when he says, “Now Tybalt, take the ‘villain’ back again / That late thou gavest me, for Mercutio’s soul / Is but a little way above our heads, / Staying for thine to keep him company: / Either thou or I, or both, must go with him.” (3.1.121-125). After hearing the news of Mercutio’s death from Benvolio, Romeo rushes up to Tybalt and challenges him to a fight. His affection for Mercutio leads him to his thoughtless action and caused him to later be banished from Verona. Romeo, once again, has shown his impulsiveness after…

My first point is, right at the start of the scene, Mercutio keeps pushing for a fight. Benvolio on the other hand, keeps telling Mercutio to retire, but Mercutio will not. In lines one and two, Benvolio says, ‘I pray thee, good Mercutio, let’s retire: the day is hot, the Capels are abroad, and if we meet we shall not scape a brawl…’ This suggests that Benvolio is aware of the Capulet presence, and is not comfortable with where they are, this builds tension. However Mercutio’s reply is quite sarcastic and confident and it taunts Benvolio, ‘Thou art like one of those fellows that, claps me his sword on the table, and says ‘God send no need of thee!” This basically says to Benvolio that, if he carries a weapon, but does not use it, why does he carry it in the first place? This suggests that Mercutio carries a weapon for its purpose.…
