Mentally Retarded People In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men
Mentally retarded people should have different rules than a person with a so called “ normal” person. First they don’t learn as quick or understand things as fast as people who have a normal mind set. Next is they shouldn't have as many privileges as us because they are harder to maintain and keep an eye on. Also they should have a shorter leash so then someone is always watching over them to keep an eye on him. At the end of the book George’s action was justified. George wanted to put Lennie out of his misery before he was killed by Curley. If George wouldn't have shot Lennie, Curley would have tortured him before he killed him. Also George wanted Lennie to go out like a light not to let him suffer because he did what he thought was right

In “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck, George makes a rash decision, and that decision is shooting Lennie. I think George made the right decision shooting Lennie because Curley would’ve made sure Lennie was tortured, and Lennie got to die happy. Also, George gets to make sure no one else can get their hands on Lennie, causing him to get hurt worse than what already happened.…

The first reason that George's decision was justified is because no one wants to see their best friend killed in front of their own eyes. George knew that if the mob got to Lennie before he did, then he would be dead no doubt. So he ran as fast as he could to the spot where George said if Lennie ever got in trouble to go to. George took the gun from where Curley put it and went off to their spot. Even Slim thought that George needed to kill him “Never you mind,’ said Slim. ‘A guy got to sometimes.” Obviously, George did not want Lennie to die but he realizes it is him or them.…

Some people might think that George is not a true friend to Lennie. They might think this because George kills Lennie. George could have run away with Lennie instead of killing him, or he could have let Lennie run away on his own. He killed Lennie because it was the best option he had. The mob could have found Lennie, and Lennie would just mess up again. Also he killed him peacefully, which is better than any other form of death and a sign of compassion. If George didn’t kill Lennie Curley’s mob would have killed him in a more painful way, which George would not…

My first reason for believing that George did the right thing is to speculate on what may have happened if he had not killed Lennie. Curley didn’t hold much affection for his wife, and from the moment he’s introduced in the book, its clear he is against Lennie. He has always been bitter about his size and strength and ever since Lennie crushed his hand he has been waiting for some excuse to get him back. ‘I’ll kill the big son-of-a-bitch myself. I’ll shoot ‘im in the guts.’ If George had not mercifully killed Lennie in the most painless way possible, he would have been brutally killed by Curley in revenge for his wife’s murder. Lennie got the closest any of them ever could to the dream of having their own…

One might believe that George should not have shot Lennie because it was wrong and irrational because he could have been saved may have been saved given a better life. However, George should have killed Lennie because it was the humane thing to do. Since it was the humane thing to do Geroge shot Lennie for several reasons. Geroge shot Lennie to protect or save him from himself because Lennie did not own his own strengths. Lennie was killed by George out love and respect for him as a genuine person not by revenge or hatred towards him. Geroge cared for Lennie like a brother and thought that it is better for him to kill Lennie quick rather than for Lennie to die painfully and not knowing about their “dream” that they both shared.…

Lennie's retarded mind causes the death of Curley's wife and his puppy. For example when Lennie killed Curley's wife it was because of his slow mind that caused her to panic and Lennie to shake her telling her to stop which ultimately killed her. When Lennie was petting her hair, she told him to stop because he will ruin her hair. Once she got angry, Lennie got scared and grabbed her hair, causing her to panic and lead Lennie to shake her to her death. Another example would be when Lennie was playing with the puppy and was throwing it up into the air not thinking about the consequences. Lennie was “playing” with his puppy throwing him in the air, but Lennie unable to think about the consequences quick enough shook the puppy to its death.…

Next, George didn’t want anyone else to kill Lennie, just like how Candy said he wished he could have shot his dog instead of someone else. George probably wouldn’t have been able to live with himself if he allowed someone to kill Lennie out of hate or maybe torture. George put Lennie in his “happy place before he dies unlike Curley who would’ve tortured Lennie. George just couldn't turn Lennie over to the police. For example what happen in weed and when Lennie break Curley’s hand but George didn’t. Also George kill because he knew that Lennie would not be able to handle being separated from him. How do you think society handle people who are different? I was treated differently when I moved to Connecticut. Everyone talked about me and did not like me because I was born in Texas. Everyone called me dumb because I did not have the same education as everyone else. People use to say “You’ll never be as smart as me because you were born in a dumb state.” They use to make fun of my accent, they would taunt me and say “Howdy y’all!” and act like a cowboy.…
