Mental Health Personal Statement Essay
My passion for the field of mental health began when I took my first psychology class in high school. After taking this class, I knew mental health was the field for me. I started my college journey at College of Southern Nevada (CSN). I gained a strong foundational knowledge of mental functioning and human behaviors. After earning my Associate’s Degree in psychology, I enrolled at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) to pursue my Bachelor’s Degree. After I started I decided to add a minor in sociology, as I felt that it would also be beneficial for me. I worked hard to get valuable internships and externships to prepare me for graduate school. In this personal statement I will mention two opportunities that brought me to where I am now …show more content…
My main role was managing clinical records, preparing intervention files, and maintaining protocols. At FRS, I was involved in assisting with various clinical research projects, including a R01 grant involving a randomized control trial, funded by the National Institute of Drug Abuse. That particular project was investigating modifications to Family Behavioral Therapy (FBT) within a collegiate athlete population. Dr. Bradley Donohue, the developer of FBT, is the program’s director. I was drawn to his lab by their family behavioral approach and my opportunity to be involved in innovative services and research. I am very grateful for the opportunities I have received at FRS, and I feel it has prepared me to be successful in furthering my …show more content…
I want to be less worried about how I am going to pay for my education and more focused on doing the best I can in my classes and coursework overall. I have been working two jobs trying to pay for school and still keep up my grades so that I do not have a high level of debt at the end of my journey. I am very grateful for all my opportunities at UNLV and want to be able to continue to work hard towards my ultimate goal to be the best counselor I can be. Additionally, although I am consider a part time student on my degree sheet/track I am pushing myself to do more classes each semester because I feel it is more enriching for me to do as much as I

This in no way makes me an expert, but I will be better able to understand some of the feelings associated with these disorders. I would be able to share ways of coping that have worked for me in the past. I also have had first hand experience in dealing with children with behavior disorders my brother was diagnosed at a very young age with O.D.D, ADHD, and Bi-polar. This gives me an advantage over other candidates because I have seen first hand what techniques work best.…

Especially in young people, according to NAMI (national alliance on mental health) 1 in 5 children ages 13-18 have, or will have a serious mental illness. On the outside I was the happiest and luckiest kid, I had everything. I began to notice things though. I began to question my sexuality. I also began to question the world and the adults around me and if I was truly happy. I was soon experiencing scary panic attacks. I did not know what was happening to me, I was scared for…

Currently I am pursing an associate degree in Mental Health Technology. Though it is not absolutely necessary to have a degree to be in this field, those mental health facilities that are looking for individuals to become a part of their organization are going for prospects that have completed a two-year program or training from an accredited institution. This lets the employer know that the individual at least meets the minimum requirements and skills for the position they are interested in. An associate degree in MHT requires classes in mental health, general psychology, biology, intervention, substance and alcohol abuse, as well as numerous prerequisites and core curriculum.…

My name is Regina Goforth-Lewis. I was born and raised in Michigan. As a young child, I went to four different elementary schools. I ended up graduating High School from the last of those schools, Southfield Christian High School. It was here that I decided I would eventually work with youth in some way. My life took a small detour before I got to that point. I attended the Oakland Community College shortly after graduating, however, decided to work full time and pursue a different career avenue: Retail Management. Although this was exciting and perfect for me at the time, I knew it was not my calling. Around the age of 22, I decided to enroll back to in college part time and follow the original dream of working with young people. I studied under the Social Work/Mental Health field. I never completed the program to receive my Associates Degree; however, I do have 66 credit hours accumulated. During this time, I loved college and my internship, which later became a fulltime job at the H.A.V.E.N. I worked there as a Supervised Visitation Specialist for many years. While working in the social work field and also in the communications field, I met and married my husband and we started a family. I always knew if it was feasible I would want to be able to stay at home with my children for as long as possible and I was fortunate enough to be able to do this for almost 13 years. Along the way I held down several part time jobs to earn extra income for the family, these jobs always included working with youth to some degree, such as a shift supervisor at the local Parks and Recreation Center’s concession stand or at the Elementary School where the children attended as a lunch room monitor. I also volunteered time at my church as a Sunday school teacher, a senior high youth advisor and a Deacon. I read to students at the library and taught American Sign Language (ASL) to hearing children. After 15 years, my children’s father and I divorced. I currently find myself as…
