The US Army is now actively considered a profession. We were not always thought of so highly. With pitfalls after major conflicts such as post-WWII into Korea and post-Vietnam, we resembled more of an occupation rather than a profession. (Army White Paper, 2010). What does it mean to be a profession? With this renewed sense of professionalism, how are our leaders balancing their roles to earn and keep the trust of our clients? What and how has the culture adapted as we gain experience in pursuit of being a Profession of Arms? Specifically, how do we as HR Leaders see our own role evolving with the profession? How are our leaders adapting to today’s society and their demands on the military as a Profession? There must be a balance maintained in order to keep up the profession as we have come to see it. The relationship between the Army’s four fields of expertise and its current and potential operating environment and then the relationship between the Army’s culture and climate. As an HR Sergeant our role is vast. We manage the readiness of this ever evolving profession and in turn we strive to retain the best possible Soldiers and leaders to continue to keep our Army the Profession of Arms that it is. HR Sergeants don’t just provide readiness but ensure that those we are retaining for the positions are well taken care of from hire to retire. We ensure their careers in the Profession of Arms are managed so they can fight and win our nations battles performing the duties they are here to provide. HR Sergeants ensure that all personnel and their families are well looked after. Managing their pay, promotions, decorations, reassignments, vacation, medical, retirement, and records so that they can perform their duties without worry. We as leaders must teach our Soldiers the importance of our duty as HR Sergeants and instill in them not just the requirement but the pride in being an AG Soldier.
