Men And Women Athletes Should Be Paid Essay
Junior Research Paper: Men and Women Athletes Should Be Paid The Same
Imagine you were doing your favorite activity, playing on your favorite sports team, or working at your dream job and the opposite gender is making more money than you are for doing the exact same thing, how would that make you feel? These are some situations where men and women are not being paid equally for working at the same thing. Gender equality is a big issue in the sports world especially for women because they are mistreated. Women athletes should make the same amount of money as men athletes because they both have dedicated their lives to their sport, represent the same brands, and work just as hard.

When Rich Nichols the lawyer for the U.S Women’s National Soccer Team was asked by Norah O’ Donnell “Like the WNBA and the NBA are two separate organizations?” Nichols responded “Correct. Same-- same employer, same job, same work conditions, same everything.” (CBS News 60 minutes). Women professional athletes who play soccer are playing the exact same sport and working at the same things as male professional athletes are. People say men work harder at what they do and that they are training more than the women which is not true, they both are committed to the sport that they love and are equally working hard. For instance, according to The Players Tribune Max Eisenbud, Maria Sharapova’s longtime agent, told the Author “Maria’s work ethic has always been the same since she was four years old and she has continuously improved her game and added new elements to it.” Athletes have dedicated their lives to playing sports and are always working hard at what they do in order to become better, this goes for both men and women. A stereotype for men is that they do the dirty work and have a rough job and are always being the hardworking ones but in reality women can work just as hard as men at anything and the same goes for sports they can perform the same if they have the same

Andrew Das in the article, “Pay Disparity in U.S. Soccer? It’s Complicated”, states that U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team is receiving more money than the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team. “According to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission five of the top players for the U.S. Women’s National Team accused U.S. Soccer of paying them a quarter of what the men make along with the bonuses” Das explains. Das supports his statement by explaining how much the Men receive and how the bonuses work for the Men’s team vs how much the Women receive and how their bonuses work. First, Das states that according to U.S. Soccer the top women made around 1.2 million while the top Men players made 1.4 million but the top ten Women sometimes make more money…

American Olympic athletes should be paid more money for training and competing. They currently do not make enough which is leading to less than optimal performance for the American team. Most olympians are making less than $15,000 per year(less than minimum wage), which makes it tough for them to train to their potential and win. America’s top athletes are going to play football, basketball, or baseball instead of competing in the Olympics. We are also being beat by other countries that pay and value their athletes more.…

Imagine this: you are in the military force, you risk your life on a day-to-day basis for our country's freedom. If you survive fighting, you sleep on an uncomfortable, rock hard bed and eat nauseating food. You work your tail off, yet you actually make less than the average American does yearly. Now, take into perspective, perhaps a professional boxer: they may risk their lives, but it's for our entertainment, not for our safety. When they are done wrestling, they go back to their five star hotels and eat gourmet food. They train, and yes, they may have worked hard to get to where they are, but they're out here making millions per fight, which is way more than what the average American makes. Look closer, should an entertainer really get paid such a profound amount for one fight, rather than those who work to…

There are extensive amounts of controversy in our society today, such as whether or not college athletes should be paid or not. Even though college athletes receive many luxuries they still have to make there own living and support themselves. As reported by “Pay or Scholarship” written by Teengagement, it states, “Athletes are employees because they work under the control of the college.” As many people know a business has employees, if an athlete can be considered an employee to the college shouldn't they be paid like and employee? Student-Athletes who are recruited to play a college sport are going in with one goal, to play their sport professionally by being the best player they can be. Unfortunately only about 3% percent of NCAA athletes in their respective sport go on to play professionally. The other 97% spend hours and hours of their precious time practicing on the field all for no future in that specific field of work. Actually according to Forbes, Marc Edelman reports “student-athletes work 3 and a half more hours a week than a typical american worker”(Forbes) If an NCAA athlete spends over 40 hours a week practicing their game, then they are working the same amount of hours as people who are in full employment. These hours are spanned over practices, training, games traveling, attending classes, and maintaining grades which is important in order to remain on the team and keep their full scholarship. For people that complain about their jobs and only have to work less than 40 hours a week, think about a student athlete whose job is not only intellectually demanding but brings them to the limits of their physical endurance as…

Both male and female athletes compete at such incredible levels that require physical talent and drive. Professional athletes are known to get paid salaries that reflect their talent and abilities. Regardless of gender, professional athletes are drafted to receive professional pay. However, equal pay for male and female athletes with the same credentials does not occur today. There is a belief that male athletes are worth more than female athletes and are better at promoting themselves. Also, women salaries are lower because of their gender and are not based on their performance. Although audiences seem more excited watching men sports, this does not mean men should get paid more. Men should not be paid more than female athletes who have similar talent and credentials.…

When it comes to sports in this society, women’s status often has low expectations for their ability to play and are known as not excited or weakness in the sport. As for men athletes in this society, they are expected to become active, highly strong, and energetic in the sport. Title IX is a short and simple term for: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance” (Title IX and Sex Discrimination). This law was supposed to resolve all the inequality women face in society. Still in this generation, women still struggle with equality in the world, especially in the sports society. When it comes to sports, through the world, it seems like men sport is more noticeable and intriguing to everyone. I think it is highly…
