memories hinder or help
Essay Topic : Do memories hinder or help people in their effort to learn from the past and succeed in the present?

Essay
Without our past, our future would be a tortuous path leading to nowhere. In order to move up the ladder of success and achievement we must come to terms with our past and integrate it into our future. Even if in the past we made mistakes, this will only make wiser people out of us and guide us to where we are supposed to be.
This past year, I was auditioning for the fall play, "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof." To my detriment I thought it would be a good idea to watch the movie in order to prepare. For two hours I studied Elizabeth Taylor's mannerisms, attitude, and diction, hoping I could mimic her performance. I auditioned for the part of "Maggie" feeling perfectly confident in my portrayal of Elizabeth Taylor, however, I was unaware that my director saw exactly what I had been thinking. Unfortunately, I didn't get the part, and my director told me that he needed to see "Maggie" from my perspective, not Elizabeth Taylor's.
I learned from this experience, and promised myself I would not try to imitate another actress, in order to create my character. Perservering, I was anxious to audition for the winter play just two months later. The play was Neil Simon's "Rumors," and would get the opportunity to play "Chris," a sarcastic yet witty role, which would be my final performance in high school. In order to develop my character, I planned out her life just as I thought it should be, gave her the voice I thought was right, and the rest of her character unfolded beautifully from there. My director told me after the first show that "Rumors" was the best work he'd ever seen from me, and that he was amazed at how I'd developed such a believable character. Thinking back to my first audition I was grateful for that chance I had to learn and to grow, because without that mistake I might have tried to base "Chris" off of someone I'd known or something

In the eighth grade, I auditioned for a youth production of “Once Upon a Mattress” at the Morgan-Wixson Theater. It was my first time auditioning for a show in which I wasn't guaranteed a role. Being certain of my abilities and craving a challenge, I auditioned and landed a role in the ensemble. A week into rehearsal one of the leads dropped out, and the director called back members of the ensemble to replace her. After performing just a quarter of the monologue I was recast as a lead character. However, I was oblivious to the stress this character would end up putting on my life. I had only ever played romantic leads who had sweet demeanors, and this character had anything but. The villain and antagonist of the story, Queen Aggravain is an…

Learning to deal with, and share the memories from a lifetime ago is important. “The communities of memory that tie us to past also turn us toward the future as communities of hope,”2 Bellah explains. By remembering the past we see the pain, the misfortune, the danger, and the list could go on and on; but we also see hope for a better tomorrow. Recalling the bad, while looking at a problem facing the present, reminds us we are stronger than we think. Just as the communities each of us live in faced hardship to get to the place they are now, they will face even more, but are stronger now than they were at the beginning. This is because, “… collective memory is a source of social strength.”3 The strength of the nation, city,…

This really started to make me analyse my character; how does my character walk? What traits does my character have? What kinds of people does my character get on with? I tried to imagine how my character would behave in reality, I became my character. I then had to consider that my character is not on stage and is in fact on screen. This meant that my character didn’t have to talk so loud to be heard she was able to use her inside voice; I also had to consider what kinds of facial expressions my character would pull as being on camera would require close ups to really see the chemistry between…

Misleading information presented after an event can lead people to erroneous reports of that misinformation. Different process histories can be responsible for the same erroneous report in different people. We argue that the relative proportion of times that the different process histories are responsible for erroneous reporting will depend on the conditions of acquisition, retention, and retrieval of information. Given the conditions typical of most misinformation experiments, it appears that misinformation acceptance plays a major role, memory impairment plays some role, and pure guessing plays little or no role. Moreover, we argue that misinformation acceptance has not received the appreciation that it deserves as a phenomenon worthy…

One of the biggest things I needed to change about myself in order to portray my character as Helena I needed to change the way in which I spoke, due to her being a naturally whiney person I needed to over exaggerate everything I said. This involved making my body language over dramatic. These elements alone create an effect in which makes the character cringy. Due to the synopsis of the play and the situations within it my character stands out a lot, which means because of her personality I need to over exaggerate her emotions, which included facial expression as well.…
