Memories from Grandma's House
My Grandma’s House

Some of the best memories of my life are from my Grandma’s house. When I was a kid my most favorite place to visit was always my Grandma’s house. This was the place I would go before and after school. I always loved going to her house because it made me feel safe since I knew I would not be alone. In the winter I was warm because she always had a crackling fire on those cold and rainy days. It seemed like there was always the smell of freshly brewed coffee. As a matter of fact, it seemed like my Grandma was always making coffee. Grandpa always had a hot steamy cup of coffee in his hands and it was the first thing Grandma offered company when they came to visit. I can even remember the collection of coffee cups that were so meticulously lined up on the first two shelves of the cabinets. There were cups with every state name on them, red cups, white cups, cups with Elvis and Christmas cups. Nowadays if I smell coffee, I fondly think of my Grandma’s house. The house was a small, white cottage-style with black trimming and a beautiful flower garden that led up to the front door. I can still smell the aroma of freshly cut flowers that would occupy the crystal clear glass vase on the dining room table. There were draping, well-established grape vines that covered the wooden arbor as you pulled into the driveway. It was the house my Grandma had lived in for most of her life and you could almost see the memories that encumbered the atmosphere. When I entered her house it was usually through the back door where I would have to navigate my way through the very flimsy, squeaky screen door that lead VanCleave 2 into a somewhat minuscule enclosed back porch. I can still remember the feel of the old metal handle that was loosely attached to the door. There was always a neatly stacked pile of wood on the back porch. The gray paint on the floor was scratched and chipped away from all the years of abuse absorbed by the constant

For seventeen years, I called it home. For seventeen years I lived a life surrounded by adoring family members. Now, this is all a distant memory. It was the house in which my life became estranged: trying to hide from the realms of reality while escaping into the fantasy in which I belonged. Now, each time I picture it, it taunts me. It has become a house that beholds my true nightmares……

It had beautiful, old ironwork surrounding the verandah, and dark green paint on the doors (Campbell). We toured the house jumping at every random sound because we were afraid of ghosts. The décor of the home was exquisitely decorated in the time period of the house (Campbell). When we finished our self-guided tour we walked out to stand on the verandah and admire the view. It was dark outside and nobody was in the home so we decided to spend the night here. We found two beds and quickly fell asleep.…

When I open the door it was like a home filled with love and purity my ideal home it was just perfect. As soon as u walk in you see an average size kitchen on the right and a big bathroom with a bedroom on the left and when you keep walking straight there is a living room and a balcony with the most spectacular view of the pier and upstairs there is a bathroom and two rooms. For the first week or so it felt like I was in heaven waking up in the morning and looking upon the whole town covered in fog going to the rocks and looking for crabs, snails, and shells. One day we decide to go to the ocean and although it was cold we went and started searching for shells and then we found something that I happen to know what it was but never actually felt it alive and fresh out the water. I picked it up and showed it to my friend and we started running to the apartments and showed everyone what we found, everyone had their mouths open and started to touch it. There was a tiny voice that started to say to put the purple starfish back because it deserves to live and so i went back and tried to go as deep as I can to lay it down so no one will harm it. For many days we went to the beach till sunrise to sunset watching the tides rise and decrease and seeing the…

When I was nine years old my parents would no longer let me see my grandma Anne from my dad’s side, because she was an alcoholic. She was always drinking and it got to the point that when she would come over to our house my parents would have to go hide all the alcohol. Sadly my grandma Anne passed away a few years later of kidney failure ultimately because of the drinking. I never got to see her before she passed, but I remember the way her hands felt like silk when I would hold them and she smelt like freshly cut flowers on a rainy day.…

In the story “_The Jilting of Granny Weatherall_” Katherine Porter tells a compelling story of a dying eighty-year old woman who is reminiscing on the memories she had throughout her life. Out of all the memories Granny Weatherall is remembering, one seems to stand out more than any of the others; the memories of her bridegroom jilting her on her wedding day. This memory seems to plague Granny Weatherall’s last moments of her life. In the story, you see Granny Weatherall transitioning throughout her life from a healthy, lively, and confident woman '' to a woman who is bent, confused, distorted, and unable to let go of her past memories. In the beginning of the story, Granny Weatherall is definitely in a state of denial when it comes to her health and well being. She feels like an eighty year old woman but yet wants nothing to do with Doctor Harry and the hospital staff. Granny Weatherall states “That brat ought to be in knee breeches. Doctoring around the country with spectacles on his nose! Get along now, take your schoolbooks and go. There’s nothing wrong with me.” (1388) When Granny Weatherall makes remakes such as that one; I can only assume that she is in denial of her state of mind and her health. Granny Weatherall was old but she was also very independent, and felt like she was able to care for herself. She didn’t want others such as Doctor Harry telling her that she was unable to care for herself or that she could no longer be independent. She was a very strong willed woman and wanted it to stay that way. Granny Weatherall was also very certain of her faith in GOD. She was sure that her faith in GOD had secured her a place in heaven after death. She was very much involved with her faith; and she trusted a higher power to take care of her in her afterlife. However, by the end of the story I saw Granny Weatherall slowly fading away. She was more surprised that George who is the man who jilted her on her wedding day was not there through this tough time in…

It is the one place where I know I can relax. It has that small cottage feel to it. There are not only huge oak trees and rose bushes surrounding it, but she also has a small garden waterfall, which complements it nicely. The moment I walked inside the house, a feeling of calmness came over me. The worries of going to work and paying bills that would not ever be paid off vanished from my mind. This place is my absolute haven away from the rat race of the inner city and when I tire of crowds of people around me. This is one place where southerners with true southern hospitality…

My Great-Grandfather hand built the humble, white, two-story farmhouse that sits on the corner of their two hundred acre farm in the late 1930’s. It has a tall-blackened brick chimney that they use to heat the house. There is a grand wrap around porch that is decorated with rocking chairs and assortments of breathtaking flowerpots that my Great-Grandmother puts together. My favorite room in the house is the kitchen that is always filled with the aroma of fresh handmade dinner rolls and homegrown vegetables. Many of the rooms are adorned in old family photos and beautiful hand painted porcelain dolls.…

I remember the days, when grandmother was still around. She wasn’t the typical stereotype grandmother who sits in old, wooden rocking chairs, knitting endlessly to pass their old days. My grandmother was special. Short, black-grey curls bounced around her wrinkled sun burnt face. Dark mischievous eyes twinkled from under bushy eyebrows. My grandmother was really energetic. She was always running around, cracking jokes, and bringing me out for picnics. I spent a lot of time with grandma, when my parents went for vacations. I enjoyed my days with grandma though.…
