Memorial Day Dinner Narrative
Here we are once again. Once a year around Memorial Day weekend, my mother tries her best to put a dinner together for our big, country family. Every year is a disaster. I thought laughter and food (especially food) would make our family put our differences to the side and come together as a family. Last year, two of my optimistic aunties battled it out over who made the best chicken spaghetti. Let me tell you, that did not end well. “You bow-legged dried up frog!” yelled my Aunt Cathy. “Why every year you make that watery mess, knowing that mine taste better? Ask Momma. She will tell you whose is the best.” “Who you calling bow-legged?” said my Aunt Kathline. “Your chicken spaghetti last year was the one that put Momma in the hospital. Talking about ‘oooh she fainted because it was so good that it touched her soul’. Child, please! Momma passed out caused it was not cooked all the way, you fat pig.” …show more content…
Next thing you know, food was thrown all over the place; weave was on the ground, and black eyes were thrown upon each person. That family reunion is a whole different story on its own. Where are my manners? I did not introduce myself. I am the spoiled, rotten child, Kaleigh Brookes. I’m my mother’s favorite and only daughter. I say favorite because I have an obnoxious, older brother by the name of Dominic Brookes who does not have a care in the world. Every year during the family reunion, he brings a different “female.” We thought last year girl was gone be the last

Childhood memories of dinnertime hold a special place in my heart. What used to be a daily experience of family unity and sharing is unfortunately now reserved for holidays and an occasional Sunday or birthday gathering. Rather than each family member drifting into his or her own individual world as their life grew busier, we always had the interaction during mealtime to strengthen our family bonds and enrich the daily experience of community life. My mother would create a meal consisting of either a pasta, or meat and potato type meal for our family of six. Our evening meal always included a salad, plenty of vegetables, and a basic dessert like brownies, pie, or ice cream. There was never an official dinner time since my dad’s schedule varied. Therefore,…

The waiter was a kind lady, who immediately gave my dad and I good-looking bread. When I put the bread into my mouth, an explosion of buttery, juicy bread excited my taste buds. It was only a couple minutes in, and I already liked the food. When the waiter came back, my dad had asked the waiter what were some good appetizers to devour on. She stated that the papa rellena, tamal en hoja, and tostones rellenos were good foods to try. I was curious why she chose these three, but when they came and I put them in my mouth, I understood why. They each had their own unique taste, with the papa rellena being my favorite one. It was so interesting and tasty how they stuffed beef into a potato. For the main course, I decided to try something different and amusing. I ordered a rabo encendido, which is the tail of an ox. Even though it sounds disgusting, it was surprisingly good, with a soft, beefy-like taste to it. My dad ordered arroz con pollo, which when arrived at our table was like a mountain of rice. I must say that for the first time in my life, I didn’t have room for desert. In the end, my dad and I brought boxes of left over Cuban food home, both agreeing that the food was worth the price.…

As Corrie and I sadly drove away from the others in Ellie’s Land Rover, I started to question myself whether or not I truly wanted to risk my life for a girl that could potentially die at or on the way to the hospital. My head was bursting with questioning thoughts, that I wasn’t quite sure how to answer, “What if Corrie dies?”, “What happens if we get caught and become prisoners of war?”, “How will I carry on in life all on my own?.” In order to get to the hospital with minimal risks, I needed to get my head together and carry on with this sceptical drive, however, still keep in mind all of these threatening possibilities. I turned my head to the back of the car to see Corrie; you could tell she was very uneasy and slowly drifting away from normality. “Corrie” I said, “You need to try and stay awake, we aren’t too far from the hospital. You’re going to be okay, just hold on for a little longer.” She replied with “Kevin, hurry please. I don’t know how much longer I can hold on for. This material isn’t going to stop the bleeding for much longer.” I was going 100 k/ph but then rapidly sped up to 160 k/ph.…

Thanksgiving is considered by many as being the worse meal of the year. Why? Because of the extreme overload of high-starch carbs that trigger blood sugar spikes for so many people. Just think of it. Pumpkin pie with a scoop or two of ice cream, corn bread stuffing, mashed potatoes, sugar-laden cranberry sauce and green bean casserole, that's why.…

For as young as I was it is unfathomable to me on how or where I gathered my confidence in speaking my speeches publically on Memorial Day for the past few years, but then I remembered I had support from many aspects in my life which helped me gather together the ideas for writing and the confidence to express/communicate my morning thoughts to the community for the Memorial Service at the Bayview Cemetary. I tried my best every year at making sure my speech was written by self with the help of an adult advisor who happen to be my Aunt and the Legion coordinator for the Memorial Poppy Girl this was lucky for me yet also a curse because it gave me first place in Poppy Girl, there was a year or two I advised a younger Poppy girl being a senior…

Family dinner back home was more than just a meal that we sat down to share. Over the past few years our dinner has become more of a tradition that it has ever been in our family. Growing up, we didn’t have many sit down dinners together. My mom would usually make dinner for me and my sibling while my parents would eat later on after we were all taken care of. About five years ago, my mom started emphasizing that we eat as a family and use that as time to bond a little more since we were all so bust during the day. I thought it was a silly idea at first but after a few weeks I recognized how truly valuable that time together was. Over the last two years, we had some pretty serious family issues that tore us apart but through all of it my mom still tried to use dinner as a time for us to stay together and connected. This was a rough period for everyone in our family and it really broke us down. Both of my brothers stopped wanting to spend time with everyone at dinner but with a little persuasion that changed. Dinner was the glue that my mom used to keep us together as a family. Even though everything isn’t cleared up, I still feel like our family dinner time is one of…

However, it is the fresh cooked turkey that seals the deal for an amazing dinner. Cooking the green beans, the corn was a walk in the park for my parents, so that was nothing to worry about. However, what we did not think about were the pies. It is easy to go to the store and buy pre made pies, but nothing compared to fresh homemade pies. After contemplating, my mom made the decision to make an apple and pumpkin pie. For someone who had never baked cookies from scratch, this was definitely out of my mom’s comfort zone. What we were left to still think about was the turkey, and the big question if we would be able to pull of this huge…

There are hundreds of home cooked meals around the world. Some are very complex while others are quite simple to make. Unfortunately, every home cooked meal cannot be mastered by everyone. With this universal dilemma, we are always taking a risk when trying home cooked meals made by different people. Because of this I’ve decided to choose macaroni and cheese. Normally this dish is looked as a kids’ meal or a meal that isn’t very fancy/mature. In fact, this dish is served all over the world in multiple of ways to people for almost any occasion. I personally love this dish because of the variety of ways it can be prepared. Meaning, that the cheeses use, the methods used to cook, and special touches added are very important in ensuring that the perfect bowl/plate of mac and cheese. Without these three factors the meal is not to be brought to Thanksgiving Dinner.…
