What is the first thing that goes though your mind when you hear the words Memorial Day? What does it mean to you? What symbolization does it hold in you? Ladies and gentlemen, sadly enough, the true meaning of Memorial Day has been seemingly lost by the majority of Americans today. Many confuse this day for Veterans Day or even Armed Forces Day. Although it is highly appropriate to honor all our veterans, living and dead, and to recognize their immeasurable contributions to our country, this is not the true meaning of Memorial Day. When I asked you what the day means to you…what is symbolized to you, what went through you mind? Did you simply think of it as another federal holiday? A 3-day weekend? The beginning of the 100 days of Summer…a BBQ? Or did you think of a mother…

87 years ago the founding fathers created a new country based on the idea that everyone is created equally, and the war they were in at the time was testing whether or not a country like that can survive. Some people only see the power in traditional-looking monuments that are replicas of human beings. 30 years ago, a young female student changed the way we view monuments forever. In 1981, Maya Lin's simple but powerful design was chosen to honor the tens of thousands of fallen Vietnam War soldiers. Many people did not enjoy the design. However, the Vietnam Memorial Wall is a thoughtful and powerful tribute to the Vietnam veterans killed in action, as well as those still living, because it emphasizes the individual sacrifice of each soldier.…

On Memorial Day, people visit the graves of their loved ones and set aside the day to remember their family members. In my family, we also spend time with family and friends eating, playing games and talking about our ancestors. This is what Day of the Dead celebrates as well. Although many people in the United States don’t go to such lengths as the Mexican people, people in both nations use family traditions and customs to celebrate and honor the lives of their dead relatives. I think American veterans should be honored for several key reasons. The first and foremost reason is that these brave men and women risked ther lives for the freedom of the United States, or even for the freedom of a country half way around the world, which they knew nothing about. Either way these soilders fought for freedom, and each one should be honored one way or another. Another reason veterans should be commended is because we never want to repeat the time when Vietnam war veterans came back to the states. They were treated terribly. They were spit on, objects were thrown at them, they were denied of jobs by people who resented the war, etc. Yet another reason is that these people fight so the rest of us don't have to. These people also keep the wars over seas, so us citizens can sleep safely at night. Also, some soilders see some really traumatizing things. Either seeing their buddies die right in front of them. Anyone who has seen Saving Private Ryan has a pretty good idea of what some soilders witness.…

Veterans Day is the day that we put aside to respect the individuals who served, however one day does not cover all the gore. The day is insufficient to demonstrate the gratefulness which is because of the incalculable number of gallant men and ladies.
