Memoir Assignment
Everyone has those things that they like doing. Something that i enjoy doing a lot is coding. It is something that i starting doing because it was something that i was somewhat interested in. I was one to usually not be interested in a lot of things. This topic had interested me enough in that i decided to try it. It eventually because something that i enjoy learning about a lot. Eventually it helped me find something that i thoroughly enjoy doing and helped me become open to other things. I always found the idea of coding fascinating. Making something out of nothing but words. I find coding important to me because i’m usually not one to find something that i like to do a lot. Yeah cooking and some sports is good but sometimes i feel like i’m just doing that to just do that. With coding i always enjoy it. I have always been a person that could rarely find something that i constantly enjoy and so was often left unamused at many things. I’ve known about coding before but just never thought anything of it. Then when i was 12 i heard more about the programming tools like Java and coding and decided to try something with it since i didn’t have anything else and i was curious about it. I looked up some basic coding tutorials for new people. Once i knew enough i decided to try to make a simple “hello” screen. A screen that would show a hello screen appearing and disappearing. It didn’t work, yet unlike many things, i found it interesting and didn't want to stop learning about it. I was intrigued by it and wanted to see if i could make something using it. One of my friends knew of a few people that know a lot about coding and programming. I started to talk with them and started to learn more about programming. They weren’t that much older than, the eldest i think being only three years older, so it was easy for us to talk with each other. I learned more about various programming languages, mostly Java and C--. I learned the majority of syntax and semantics of those programming languages. I became well informed on how to better make more efficient scripts. I realized how much i didn’t know and more importantly, how interesting it was. After a while i eventually became a lot better at understanding Java. Eventually i decided to try making the “hello” screen again. This time i was surprised that it actually worked. When i finished putting in the scripts i decided to test it. At first it showed up as a black screen before a simple Hello screen appeared and disappeared three times in different moving sizes against different colored backgrounds. I was a bit astonished since I had gotten it to work this time. I then decided to try a different idea, a simple ball bouncing up and down against the screen. I used what i knew to write scripts that would show red ball moving up and down and forward against a simple colored screen. When it worked i was happy because i really did enjoy learning about programming. I was happy that i made that happen, not someone else, but i did it. I’m still nowhere near good, but i am learning and it’s something i don’t intend to stop. I find coding to be something very significant for me because it was one of the first things that thoroughly enchanted me, it was something that i didn’t want to stop even after the first few failed attempts. This eventually got me to start doing some other stuff that i somewhat enjoy, like some sports and cooking, although not as much as coding. It helped me start to get a more open mind with doing things. It helped me find something that i really am fond of learning about.

In March 2011, I took a few days of classes and received my hunting education certification. Looking back, the actual class time is just a blur of what not to do, but I was reminded of them when I took drivers education last December, with the what not to do teachings. I also remember being very nervous about the test, but having a great feeling when I learned I passed. That October, I remember being immensely excited to go on my first hunt. The night before my dad and I left, I had a parent teacher conference and I remember getting some strange looks in the parking lot because we had a trailer loaded with tents, four wheelers, chairs, and a bunch of other stuff…

I started as everyone else did, “Hello World”. For my entire academic career, I have always been looking for the most efficient way to complete a task. In high school, it would obliterate my enthusiasm when I had to complete history book problem sets. The teacher would always give 20 questions, say which chapters the answers are within, and set us loose. I thought to myself “I should not be doing this; this is a waste of my time”. I longed for our textbooks and assignments to go online so that I could just use the find function to instantly find the answers and fill in the assignment. No one read the chapters to learn the content, therefore everyone’s time was wasted. Thinking like this led me to fill out online worksheets and assignments incredibly efficiently. For example, I would open a word document, write my name, class, and date. I would then copy that to multiple documents so that I could save a few seconds each time I started a document. It wasn’t until learning python that I experienced a whole new world of possibilities to make my life easier. Even starting by printing concatenated strings was interesting. From there I could foresee the possibilities that python could bring. After getting into more complicated problems with python, I felt able to tackle some of my own problems, not just made up ones the teacher assigned. I made an easy to use financial calculator program that could find future values, present values, interest rates,…

The hot sun was beating down on my neck as I was picking weeds in a field. The humidity is so thick you could cut it with a knife. The smell of grass was in the air. My soft hands were getting blistered. My skin had been browned as it was covered in dirt. I hated my parents for making me do this. A man comes over and asks me to make sure that I don’t miss any. This man was my grandfather. My parents had me dropped me off while they were at my sister's softball game. I was stuck working with my grandfather for the day. He had owned two houses right next to each other, each with a large lot that needed to be maintained. There was a lot of weeds to be picked. This scene happened all too often when I was younger. I did not like this at the time and hated my parents for making me do this work. But working with my grandfather taught me character and work ethic. He himself was a hard worker and wanted me to be like him. I did not understand this at the time and just did not want to be there. In the long run I learned a lot of valuable skills from my grandfather and he became one my most influential role models.…

For as long as I can remember, I was interested in math and science. Math comes naturally to me—I enjoy the consistency that goes with it and completing each challenging problem. Similarly, I can never get enough of science, especially marine biology. Of all my subjects, science is the one I pursue most frequently outside of school; however, I always wanted something more. I was introduced to programming in my AP computer science class, and from the first day, I knew it was for me. Computer science is an excellent amalgamation of the math and science I love, embedded with the perfect amount of logic. I have enjoyed every second of my computer science class and, no matter what, hope to continue the field in the future.…

After taking calculus for nearly two semesters, I discovered that I loved that subject far more than I had anticipated. By the end of my first semester, I knew that I wanted to pursue a major that had calculus at its core; but I also wanted it to expand and complicate the material that I had already learn. After some thought, I realized that I would be committed and superfluously content to pursue a degree in physics. When I first took the subject itself in high school, I found myself intrigued with the material. At first, I found some of the topics could be challenging: but very rewarding.…

As I step off the yellow school bus, I looked up at the big, brown brick elementary school. Kids were everywhere. I was excited. The night before, I could hardly sleep. I kept getting up every five minute, afraid I might oversleep. I felt like the big man on campus, but in reality, I was the little man on campus. I was about six years old and so tiny among the older children. I was taken to the cafeteria, where all the kids were to find their teachers and walk to their homerooms as a class. I found my teacher. She was a middle-aged Caucasian woman with blonde hair. Her name was Ms. Bishop. She was nice. The bell rung and we walked in a single file line to our classroom for the next couple months.…
