Medical Internship

What skills that I learn? What did I discover about myself? What did I find most challenging? What influence will this experience have on my future academic and career choice? What were the setbacks? What did I learn from them? Over the course of the first quarter in the nurse’s office, I have learned a range of skills and absorbed an array of information in the short amount of time. I have learned certain aspects of my personality and realized that I am indeed compatible with the medical world. The experience has allowed me to learn that the field of medicine is a constant pursuit of new knowledge rather than competition of brute memorization of set standards. With this knowledge, I am bracing myself for the future workload and stress load that college will have in preparation for me. Overall, the experience I had so far in the sterilized nurse’s office was a fun, interesting yet cathartic. For the last two summers, I followed my aunt around in her hospital to watch her work and get an idea of what hospital life would feel like. Although I was in the hospital for more than three months, I believed I learned more skills in the two months of medical internship I have had. Starting from the blood group testing that was done due to curiosity. We stepped into measuring blood sugar and blood pressure both manually and automatically. Although I am not yet proficient in actually carrying out the skills that I have learned, I still remember all the information that has been introduced to me. Growth charts, components of medicine, the effects of antibacterial soap, and the difference between viruses and bacteria- are all information that was presented to me, and now I introduce these topics to others. The information and skills I know now, I believe, will help me get a head start on my career path. Through this experience I have learned that my patience regarding children is close to null.
