Medical Career Progression
After observing a brain-surgery inside the operation theater for 6 hours, I realized that I had the grit and motivation to pursue medicine as a career. It was my first visit to the operation theater. I was very elated and overwhelmed to earn the opportunity to view the most intricate surgery of all. I was just a few feet away from the patient who was undergoing the surgery. The feeling in me could be comparable to that of a child waiting curiously and patiently to receive a chocolate when distributed in class. I could feel a surge of passion flowing through my veins and I felt a sense of relief, as I was never this sure of my dream to become a surgeon. Finding opportunities to differentiate myself from the others is a struggle as there are limited options in this field to showcase someone’s passion and talent. However, I did find a way to enhance my skills and knowledge to help me pursue my medical career. In the past 4 years, due to my keen and acute interest, I have explored various areas to collectively gain knowledge in a holistic approach to balance various aspects of medicine. I was fortunate enough to find doctors and surgeons from three reputed hospitals who were intrigued about my passion and gave me interning opportunities, which involved observations of various departments and patients around hospitals. This helped me understand the hospital environment and its business on a broader perspective. Due to my alacrity, I also earned opportunities to observe three more complex surgeries (knee replacement, Incision and drainage, Cesarean) inside the operation theater.
Along with my clinical knowledge, I also focused on strengthening my humane side. During my summer vacation I made many visits to institutions such as the Spastics society of Karnataka and the Samarthana Orphanage to observe and fathom the hardships and problems of patients. During these visits, I discovered their struggle to lead a normal life, which is a basic human right. I got to sympathize with patients and their parents, which in turn augmented my compassion towards them. Through these experiences, many feelings and emotions have converged within me reaffirming my
