Bar soap is seemingly such an unassuming everyday household item. However it isn’t as simple as it may appear. For example, Dove soap is made up of sodium cocoylisethionate, stearic acid, coconut acid, and sodium tallowate. In addition, water, sodium isethionate, sodium stearate, cocamidopropyl betaine, sodium cocoate or palm kernelate, fragrance, sodium chloride, BHT and titanium dioxide are also used. Now, the once ordinary bar of soap seems so much more complex. To my surprise, many women around the world see a bar of Dove soap even more complex than that. The Dove campaign for Real beauty has inspired many women to think far more critically about something that they would normally not think much about. Since 2004 Dove has tried, “…to celebrate the natural physical variation embodied by all women and inspire them to have the confidence to be comfortable with themselves.”(Dove) Dove has launched a variety of advertisements, video, workshops, and sleepover events to 11 million women throughout the country.…

    Does Media Shape Identity?

The media has a very influential power over people within society. As a collective we are constantly internalising a large influx of media all around as. This sort of media includes television, magazines, the internet, television and social media. Particularly in this postmodern era we are more than ever internalising media and its information because of its normalisation and use of it in everyday life (Gaunlett, 2008) . The media is a production of consumerism; this has been so since the industrial revolution. Consumerism intends for us to buy products that we see in the media. So the media depicts what we think we want to see which creates our identities or a perception of what and who we want to be (Gaunlett, 2008). According to Anthony Giddens, information and ideas in the media do not just reflect the social world but also contribute to its shape (Gaunlett, 2008). He also states that the media mirrors social expectations creating social reproduction (Gaunlett, 2008). The following essay will…

Visuals are all around us. Everyday we are bombarded with images selling, promoting or advertising their products or services. Almost every advertisement we see today has some sort of visual aspect to it, a picture, a logo, an illustration etc. Whether it’s a new breakfast cereal on the market to a brand new high-speed sports car to a trustworthy life insurance offer, we are constantly engulfed in advertising and most of the time we don't even realise that it is happening. Watching television we see lots of commercials advertising products, reading a newspaper or magazine we see multiple print ads, going to the cinema we see huge ad campaigns on massive screens in front of us, using public buses, toilets, train stations, bus shelters, taxis, shopping centers we see ads everywhere promoting the latest offers, to social networking sites advertising products they 'think' the individual will be interested in. Advertising is all around us everyday, everywhere we go. It is almost impossible to take shelter from it. Think of all the images portrayed in these ads that we encounter, they affect us all in different ways; they can attract attention, arouse interest and create desire. It varies from person to person. Images can spring emotions that we didn't even know we had.…

In the last 50 years, the influence of the media on the society has grown exponentially with the advance of technology. Mass media is a major force in modern culture, particularly in America. All lot of times they refer to this as a mediated culture where media reflects and creates the culture. If you look in the past, first there was the post offices and telegram, and then they build the radio, newspaper and magazines, later television and now internet. Mass media is all about communication whether spoken, written or broadcast that reaches a large audience. This includes movies, magazines, radio, television, advertising, the internet and so forth. But how is mass media influencing our society. This question is what drives me to writing this proposal. To do this research I will be using Internet, e-books and other researches done on this topic to really understand this subject and based on the result of my analysis I will present my findings and conclusion on the questions.…
