Medgar Evers Case Study
While attending Medgar Evers College, the opportunities I was afforded were second to none. I as able to affiliate or align myself with amazing advisors like Levar Burke, who was extremely fundamental while I trod the path of pursuing my career goals. He provided necessary support needed even if some of what he had to say was not what I want to hear. I’ve also had the opportunity to build rapports with like-minded individuals throughout my reigns as Junior Class Representative and Strategic Planner in the AAF organization on campus. Medgar Evers is overall a nurturing environment with a dynamic support system.

Lessons I have learned from this interview with Ronald G. Spaeth, as a graduate student in healthcare administration by reading about Mr. Spaeth’s education, awards and career accomplishments. For instance, Spaeth received a Gold Medal Award for his outstanding contributions as a leader in healthcare. I have learned that receiving a great award can start a successful career. Though, receiving an award is a part of career success. Completing an earned degree in business administration, and/or another Master’s degree is another great start for a professional successful career. Mr. Speath’s career goals were met by his educational background and work experience. I have learned that career success takes effectively working with students, leaders…

After my personal experience in HSYLC I built the HSYLC club at school to spread the spirit of liberal arts education. I organized, led, and helped students to attend China Thinks Big, USAD, and HSYLC. I built an alumni association to gather students from all over the world who have attended HSYLC and invited them to share experience and give speeches about techniques of success. This club has a great influence on me that I improved leadership by organizing a whole group; I gained team spirit by cooperating with club members; I developed communication skills by contact with different people.…

Ever since I transferred to the University of Miami as an undergrad, I have had the gratification and honor to meet and work with various remarkable people, from physicians to scientists and staff. Doing research and shadowing at Miami Miller School of Medicine gave me the prospect to admire how marvelous the school and its community are. Furthermore, I have had the satisfaction to meet several professors who teach at the medical school and the prospect of learning from them is enticing. Being able to experience first-hand the compassion and care that the doctors at Miller demonstrate their patients have also confirmed that this school is not short of role models for me to follow. Additionally, I have met several students who have shared their…

“Teely, because I’m so interested in seeing you apply with your Eagle Vision Application…” Central University. “An exclusive invitation from UNCP..” UNC Pembroke. “Mai-Teelee, you’ll want to read this.” Western Carolina. All these colleges and universities showed interest in me by reaching out through emails and letters in the mail but, it wasn’t them whom I was interested in. It was you, UNC Chapel Hill. The first time I heard about you was back in my sophomore year, in AP Environmental Science by a group of classmates who had visited the campus. At that time, I didn’t care that much for colleges. I was still worried about joining clubs and trying to make more friends and just, have fun. Like any other teenager. However, I became intrigued. Just what was it that made this school so well known and liked? Once I decided that I would aim for the medical field, my friends suggested, of course, Chapel Hill. You. They said “It’s a great medical school and you’ll get in easily because you’re Asian.” And being naive, I believed them. I didn’t quite realize just how high your expectations were. But it wouldn’t be too difficult I assumed…

In considering which path to take in graduate school, I immediately had a flashback to when I would travel with my mother and care for my younger siblings while she worked as a counselor to provide assistance with psychosocial support and mental health care to communities, families and individuals in conflict and post-conflict situations. Having the opportunity to observe her and the organization change so many people’s lives while providing them with hope, planted the seed of nurturing and counseling in my heart. Since middle school I have devoted my time to taking on every opportunity that comes my way to volunteer with helping my community better the lives of our youths.…

It is extremely visible to me that LSA cares about the lives of its students, even after they leave the classroom. The Opportunity Hub, available to students at LSA, would allow me to connect me to connect my life as a student internships outside of academia. The extremely frequent office hours would help guide me to long-term success, the goal of my education in the first place. Furthermore, the Applied Liberal Arts division of LSA would contribute to success not just in business, but life in general. LSA providing leadership and life skills highlights the college amongst the many other institutions of higher learning that ignore the basics of living and functioning in a social environment. LSA provides an unparalleled level of facilities and programs to match my goals for higher education, most notably understanding what the world has to offer me and how I can utilize with the most…

As a first-generation student, I am significantly influenced by the Student Affairs staff at my undergraduate institution. When I arrived at Ramapo College, I quickly realized I was not prepared for college-level work, if it were not for the Educational Opportunity Fund Program, I would have felt lost and would have struggled both academically and financially. Throughout my undergraduate career, I have had many Student Affairs professionals guide me to academic success and personal development. As a result, I made the conscious effort to work with the minority students on campus and accepted the position as a Resident Program Assistant for the EOF program. I worked with a diverse population of students where the majority came from low-income communities who had the potential to perform college level coursework. While…

In the end, I settled on Macalester College, a small liberal-arts school in Minnesota with a strong emphasis on internationalism and social action. It is certainly more mainstream than most of the schools that began my college search, but it is also intimate enough that I wouldn’t be able to slip through many cracks; it is located in a sizable metropolitan area where my learning would not be defined exclusively by campus boundaries; it is a place where hard questions are encouraged and expected; and its classes and dorms are well-represented by a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives. In hindsight, it was as good of a choice as any I could have made.…
