Measure for Measure is a classic play written by the famous William Shakespeare. It was written in 1604 and has developed a reputation as one of his most interesting pieces. It focuses on the fate of Claudio, who throughout the play is facing his death for getting Juliet pregnant before they were married. The sexual intercourse was consensual and they were engaged, but this was against the law in Vienna and the strict Angelo is tough to persuade to show Claudio mercy. Angelo, who is filling is as the temporary leader of Vienna after the Duchess leaves him in charge, is strict and wants to make an example out of Claudio to the other Vienna citizens. He wants to send the message that the law should not be broken under any circumstances and that he is a capable and powerful leader. Isabella, Claudio’s sister will not settle for her brother’s execution and she confronts Angelo about his decision. She is a virgin with hopes of becoming a nun, and holds her faith to the highest standard. At first, Angelo makes it clear that his mind is made up and that Claudio is already sentenced to his fate. Angelo later propositions Isabella, saying that if she has sexual intercourse with him and becomes his lover, that he will spare her brother’s life. Isabella is torn; she loves her brother dearly but does not want to disrespect the Lord in such a manner. She informs Claudio that she will not meet Angelo’s demands and Claudio tries his best to change her mind, and that she meets Angelo’s demands. This infuriates Isabella and she leaves Claudio, informing him that his execution will carry on and that there is no remedy. The Duchess forms a plan where she will replace Isabella with Mariana, Angelo’s former lover. The Duchess returns to her normal self and says that she will provide remedies for all and Claudio is pardoned.
