My Meaningful Experience

Since I have always been interested in activities that offer opportunities for helping people, I recently volunteered at XXX Hospital. Actually, the purpose of this activity was twofold, both to use my time for assisting the sick and disabled, and to try a hand at working in a medical environment. Both purposes were successfully fulfilled. I really enjoyed seeing that even with my limited knowledge I was able to make a difference in the daily routine of the hospital. My best reward was the grateful smiles of the patients whom I could entertain with my personal stories and divert from the depressing daily reality. As for myself, I would say that these people were also a real support for me as we developed a very friendly relationship that allowed me to share the everyday happenings of my life with these people and make them feel important through giving advice on different issues. In addition, I realized that a medical profession is the best career I could dream of, so comfortably I felt in these surroundings.

XXX Hospital was not my first experience in volunteering activities. Previously, I worked at a day care center for three years, which allowed me to help many people and make many friendly acquaintances. Coming there, I felt needed because there were so many things for me to do, and people kept coming and asking for assistance. Even being that busy, I was rarely tired since I was always rewarded with sincere words of gratitude that made my work meaningful. Although my path has taken a different direction, I occasionally drop by at this center to check how things are going with them.

Volunteering in the medical field was more exciting as it gave me some insights into the mechanics of the treatment process, decision-making by doctors, things that evoke my intense interest. My experience at XXX Hospital convinced me that I have to follow my desire to focus my career on nursing and after receiving a bachelor's degree proceed to the

For my service this year, I was involved with Applecross Opal Nursing Home. Opal age care was a great help to me in opening my eyes to the desperate need for an extra pair of hands and the importance of nursing homes. Not only to the individual admitted in, but also to their families and friends. As I would arrive at 12.00 every time, I would go straight into lending a hand with lunch. Handing out the meals, packing away, cleaning up and keeping an eye on a few of the residents was my first job done. Then I would wonder through the compound talking to the residents, playing and colouring in with them and I would gather and assist them to and from their rooms. With all these jobs, you had to keep a look out for and take extra care with some of the more dependant residents.…

I felt as though I knew every face that walked through the hospital doors. I watched as nurses provided passionate care to their patients. However, it wasn’t until members of my own family fell ill that I knew the career path that was meant for me. When my grandfather lay miserable in the hospital bed, I could not help but be touch by the compassionate staff that helped nurse him back to health time and time again. I came to the cessation that I would aid people the same way I feel my father had during his service in the Air Force, but I would do it from a…

Pursuing a career in the nursing field was the first change that I decided to make when I held my sister's hand as she gave birth to my three year old nephew. I was inspired by the care that was provided to my sister and my newborn nephew by various types of nurses before, during, and after birth. Since then, my awareness for the well-being of others increased while learning more about nurses and what they do. My first experience volunteering at Texas Children's Hospital has also encouraged me even more to become a nurse when I encountered my first four year old cardiac patient. I was prepped by his nurse in how to safely interact with the patient while she was helping me into my protective gown and gloves. The real inspiration was actually meeting the patient and lessening his anxiety of being in a hospital through one on one contact.…

I've volunteered in a number of places and many events, but the one's that have left an impact on me is my time spent at The Women's safe house and Guardian Angels shop and food pantry. They both helped my family through the crisis of leaving my abusive father financially, emotionally, and physically. At the Woman safe house I couldn't help but see the kids and teenager that I was babysitting and see myself in there place and I quickly became that mentor I and help them see past the darkness and into their bright futures. This position has given me the opportunity to decide if a career in medicine is truly where I would like to be. Working at the hospital has been a truly challenging experience through dealing with the magnitude of death, illness, and recovery. This experience has made me realize that a career in medicine is where I need to be. Whether it was volunteering or donating or even taking a survey to give my perspective, as long as it was helping someone and making a difference- I always enjoyed it. So going into high school year, I took the initiative of volunteering. Volunteering at the Yale Hospital since high school for four years truly changed me as a person by helping me grow as a better leader. I came out of my comfort zone and the program gave me an opportunity to experiment and try new things. It taught me responsibility, working skills, how to interact with patients, staff, and visitors of the hospital. I was lucky enough to work at different sectors of the hospitals and familiarize myself with the hospital setting. In this process, I learned…

Serving and improving the lives of others is a fundamental duty that I believe should be a part of everyone’s personal mission.
