The poem that I like the best was “Catch” by Robert Francis. I thought this poem was the me of my childhood and it represents what poetry should be. The imagery in this poem was great; it took me back to when I was a youngster when I and my brother would play catch for hours. We would throw the ball every way possible to make it more challenging and fun to play just like the poem described. The third line in the poem says “Teasing with attitudes, latitudes, interludes, altitudes” really grabbed me with the use of assonance’s and the hard T and L sounds gave the poem intensity. I also like how the poem represents how poetry should be. For example, line 10 says “Over his head, make him scramble to pick up the meaning.” Poetry is supposed to be challenging, surprise the reader and makes them think what the deeper meaning is; which creates interest. If poetry was simple and easy to read it would be a short narrative story and be engaging or satisfying. The poem was a great representation of what poetry should be and brought me back to my childhood which is why I chose it to be the best.

The poem I liked the least was “The Red Wheelbarrow” by William Carlos Williams. I liked it the least because I couldn’t find a deeper meaning of the poem. All I got from it was an image of a red wheelbarrow with rain water glistening on it sitting beside white chickens. I’m sure Williams wanted the reader to get deeper meaning out of the poem than just an image. I went through the five questions and tried to decipher the meaning of the poem and still came up with nothing. Why does so much depend on a red wheelbarrow? Does he have a bad back and depends on the wheelbarrow to haul stuff around to make a chicken coop for the chickens to survive? I have no idea. The poem has interesting diction but I thought it was vague which is why it is was my least favorite

The poem reminds me of the time I spent at my aunt’s farm when I was younger. Early mornings checking for eggs in the chicken coop. Remembering the smell of the outdoors intensified by the morning dew. I remember watching my uncle work in the fields of corn while I tended to the animals. Those days on…

Williams drags this poem on by creating an interest with the reader in his first line, “so much depends”. Williams does not reveal what he is talking about until the 4th line which is just one word; “barrow”. The fact that Williams splits the word “wheel” from the word “barrow” makes the reader visualize that the wheelbarrow is composed of two different and distinct parts. He also does this in lines 5 and 6 with “rain” and “water”. Williams ends the poem suggesting that the red wheelbarrow is beside white chickens. Again, Williams carefully describes the chickens as being “white”. The Red Wheelbarrow is a free verse poem that is composed of only one sentence. I believe the main purpose of this poem was to show imagery in the most minimalist…

My goal when writing this paper is to get my opinion and perspective on the poem across to my classmates so they know where I stand, but also to remain broad enough in my writing so that my readers can compare their own response to mine. Maybe in doing that, I can help a fellow classmate or two who has a block and is stuck in the middle of the assignment.…

While reading this poem I had to reread several lines over and over again simply because I liked them so much. A few lines that stood out to me were, “The skeleton of a calf's been wrapped around a pipe”, “A yolk slides down the drain”, and “You drive into the Wyoming part of you where it's obvious there have been some sacrifices” – all of these lines throughout this poem are vivid and give off a sense of loss. A dead baby animal represents something nipped in the bud, a yolk sliding down a drain is a fast and hopeless loss that can’t be recovered (without being messy anyway), and seeing sacrifices on a drive represents the loss of something important during the course of life. All of the images throughout this poem pulled on my heartstrings and were pieced together into a relatable format with pictures of food, animals, and rustic imagery, i.e. a plastic jug of milk, an egg yolk, flamingos, white dogs, horses, Wyoming, missile silos, tornados, bottoms of lakes, etc. And my favorite part of this poem that really caught me off guard, sealed the deal, and made me want to write this response, was the way the poem ended. The lines, “Everyone who ever knew you gently roams the town at the bottom of a lake - They flash to the surface,…

While reading it to myself in the beginning of the week, there was just something about the poem that connected me to it. The smooth conversation the flows as you read it, and the organic text can pertain to anyone who reads it who works hard. Connecting with the piece is what really made me enjoy it out of all of them. The middling poems out of the ones that were read would have to be “The Wash in My Grandmother’s Arms”. The detail that paints the picture was fascinating and I could really picture the scene in which she was laying out for the listener/reader. The one poem that was my least favorite would have to be “Falling”. There is nothing majorly wrong about this poem to where I do not like it the most, it is personally just because I would not read poems about vegetables on my own time, so I did not find entertainment out of…

“The Red Wheelbarrow” is a poem written by William Carlos Williams that is short and sweet and to the point. The speaker is someone who is stuck inside because it is raining outside. He describes looking at a red wheelbarrow covered in rain. The speaker lets us know that he is not alone on that rainy day because he notices the chickens are sitting beside it. At first glance, I couldn’t really figure the poem out. But after reading it a few times, this is how I perceived…

One of the poems that I had the best connection with was the poem, “Birches”. This poem puts the ideas of realization and imagination into a single piece of poetry. The main idea of this poem is youth. The speaker of the poem is growing old and is reminiscing on his days of youth. He looks at the birch tree and imagines a young boy swinging on the branches. The speaker is imagining himself. He is coming to the realization that his days of youth are far behind him. He is realizing that the responsibilities and “considerations” of adulthood are filling up his mind. He wishes he could go back to the carefree childhood days when he didn’t have a care in the world. Where he could jump onto the trees and swing until his arms grew sore. Robert Frost is trying to reach out and connect with the thoughts…
