The poem that I like the best was “Catch” by Robert Francis. I thought this poem was the me of my childhood and it represents what poetry should be. The imagery in this poem was great; it took me back to when I was a youngster when I and my brother would play catch for hours. We would throw the ball every way possible to make it more challenging and fun to play just like the poem described. The third line in the poem says “Teasing with attitudes, latitudes, interludes, altitudes” really grabbed me with the use of assonance’s and the hard T and L sounds gave the poem intensity. I also like how the poem represents how poetry should be. For example, line 10 says “Over his head, make him scramble to pick up the meaning.” Poetry is supposed to be challenging, surprise the reader and makes them think what the deeper meaning is; which creates interest. If poetry was simple and easy to read it would be a short narrative story and be engaging or satisfying. The poem was a great representation of what poetry should be and brought me back to my childhood which is why I chose it to be the best.

The poem I liked the least was “The Red Wheelbarrow” by William Carlos Williams. I liked it the least because I couldn’t find a deeper meaning of the poem. All I got from it was an image of a red wheelbarrow with rain water glistening on it sitting beside white chickens. I’m sure Williams wanted the reader to get deeper meaning out of the poem than just an image. I went through the five questions and tried to decipher the meaning of the poem and still came up with nothing. Why does so much depend on a red wheelbarrow? Does he have a bad back and depends on the wheelbarrow to haul stuff around to make a chicken coop for the chickens to survive? I have no idea. The poem has interesting diction but I thought it was vague which is why it is was my least favorite

My goal when writing this paper is to get my opinion and perspective on the poem across to my classmates so they know where I stand, but also to remain broad enough in my writing so that my readers can compare their own response to mine. Maybe in doing that, I can help a fellow classmate or two who has a block and is stuck in the middle of the assignment.…

The poem reminds me of the time I spent at my aunt’s farm when I was younger. Early mornings checking for eggs in the chicken coop. Remembering the smell of the outdoors intensified by the morning dew. I remember watching my uncle work in the fields of corn while I tended to the animals. Those days on…

This poem is really cool. I like it a lot. From the title all the way until the second to last line of the poem, one may think that this piece is a simplistically vivid description of a man and his farm. With such beautiful imagery, the reader anticipates an enjoyable conclusion; however, they are treated to a harsh wake-up call in the last line. I needed to read this poem multiple times before I could fully interpret it. Although they just seem like just beautiful descriptions, every line in this poem contains hidden negative symbolism about the speaker’s life.…

One of the poems that I had the best connection with was the poem, “Birches”. This poem puts the ideas of realization and imagination into a single piece of poetry. The main idea of this poem is youth. The speaker of the poem is growing old and is reminiscing on his days of youth. He looks at the birch tree and imagines a young boy swinging on the branches. The speaker is imagining himself. He is coming to the realization that his days of youth are far behind him. He is realizing that the responsibilities and “considerations” of adulthood are filling up his mind. He wishes he could go back to the carefree childhood days when he didn’t have a care in the world. Where he could jump onto the trees and swing until his arms grew sore. Robert Frost is trying to reach out and connect with the thoughts…

The meaning of life has been debated among many people throughout history. Different theories have been used to try and explain what our purpose is in this life. I’ve always heard from my parents that life is too short for regrets, and that there will be good and bad days. However what is it that people strive for in life? In reality there is no right answer to this simple question. Some people strive for living life in the moment which philosopher Baggini can agree with. Others see religion as an important way to lead their life’s as Pojman could agree with. Some like Camus believe its “humanly impossible” to find the meaning of life. Ultimately people must find it in themselves as to their purpose in this life.…

My beliefs on the meaning of life in religion and interpretation of such things.

In approaching the question of 'the meaning of life' we have to examine the nature of meaning itself. Meaning, is by definition the point, or the intended goal. Consider the point of humans and the universe as seen from monotheistic religion. If life and the universe is some sort of toy or form of entertainment for some greater being, his point, his own entertainment, would then be the meaning of humans and the universe.

Consider the goals of the deities of various cultures. Some strive for a balance between the forces of 'good' and 'evil'. This balance seems to simply be a choice of the deity, the way he thinks it ought to be. The concept of a greater being as a source of the meaning of life is flawed, because in talking about an actual point to absolutely everything, we are simply considering the goals of a being more powerful than ourselves who has chosen one of many possible goals that humans can conceive. This is to say that, if a god like this exists, his goal for life and the universe is not necessarily valid as a meaning of life, the universe, and himself.

For instance, the Bible claims that the Christian deity created the universe and placed humans in it that they might be in awe of his power. If this is so, why is worship the correct response? The meaning of the universe as created by God is the entertainment of God, but what is the meaning of the larger system containing God and his creations? We could conceive of an even greater being, but that simply takes us all the way back into the wall of infinite regression.

When I first read the Bible, it struck me as neutral on the idea of worship. The Bible flat out tells you that God created humans so that they would be in awe of him, which amounts to saying God created us to inflate his ego. We are to God as our pets are to ourselves, sources of unconditional love. In the book of Job, God essentially…

Can the presence or absence of love determine whether a person is truly living or is not living at all? James Joyce’s “The Dead” is a work of the Modern era. In keeping with the time, this short story focuses on self-reflection and isolation. Throughout the story, the main character Gabriel is desperately searching for where his position is in the world. Gretta, his wife, also seems to live as merely a shadow of her former her. Although the story is predominately centered on Gabriel, the marriage between him and his wife is of significant importance. Both Gabriel and Gretta struggle to find happiness in their marriage and more importantly, their lives. The various interactions between Gabriel and Gretta reveal a lack of desire, distantness and melancholy. In “The Dead,” Joyce uses Gabriel and Gretta’s relationship to communicate the desolation and isolation one may have felt during the modern era.…

This poem makes me feel happy and delighted. Although out of everything in the poem my favorite part is the beginning. The begging is the best part because it has lots of imagery and just brightens my mood in general. My mood is brought up by the poem because of how happy the tone Wright uses. “A Blessing” also made me think about the simple free pleasures in our life that are left invisible. “Twilight bounds softly forth on the grass, and the eyes of those two Indian ponies,” is a part from the poem that I think is the strongest. The few lines from the poem introduces what the whole poem is going to be about. Also it just gives me a picture of peace and starts to show me what the poem is going to be about…

The poem, I chose has a very optimistic point of view. It talks about life and how although we all are going to die eventually, and it’s no use dwelling on the past so you might as well live for now. This poem is interesting to me because, it gives me a different perspective on life now. This poem really relates with the world we live in because a lot of people have this kind of point of view. But also, some people feel so lost that they need to hear a positive message like this. I really like that it has a negative side, but that the postive side shines more. The whole poem has a kind of glass half full, instead of half empty kind of point of view.…

While reading it to myself in the beginning of the week, there was just something about the poem that connected me to it. The smooth conversation the flows as you read it, and the organic text can pertain to anyone who reads it who works hard. Connecting with the piece is what really made me enjoy it out of all of them. The middling poems out of the ones that were read would have to be “The Wash in My Grandmother’s Arms”. The detail that paints the picture was fascinating and I could really picture the scene in which she was laying out for the listener/reader. The one poem that was my least favorite would have to be “Falling”. There is nothing majorly wrong about this poem to where I do not like it the most, it is personally just because I would not read poems about vegetables on my own time, so I did not find entertainment out of…
