“The Huaorani were contacted only 50 years ago. Before that time, these hunter-gatherers were roaming in small groups on an area three times bigger than their present day territory. Recently, the Ecuadorian government granted the Huaorani communal rights over their current territory. However, the government maintains ownership of the minerals and oil that lie beneath; thus the Huaoranis do not fully own their land” (Cuna, 2007, para 2). The Huaorani are a semi-nomadic horticultural society and are considered foragers as they hunt for animals and gather fruits and berries. They move from area to area based on availability of food sources and plant crops no matter where they go. “They are a secluded group of people within the rainforest of Ecuador and are not familiar with normal Ecuadorian culture” (Lu, F. E., 2001). Although the rainforests are slowly disappearing, the Huaorani continue to embrace most their own distinct culture and way of life.…

The Chupacabra is the legendary hairless, dog-like creature that is responsible for the cattle mutilations in Latin America. This “strange alien-like bipedal monster with red eyes and a long, thin row of spikes down its back” rips its victims apart and removes the ears, eyes, lips, and some organs (Coleman). Also, it sometimes drains the blood completely. The creation of the Chupacabra says a great deal about humanity. The legend of the Chupacabra shows that humans want an explanation for abnormalities, let their imaginations run too wild, and need a scapegoat for their carelessness.…

In the Mixteca Alta region, several of environmental changes were examined by Veronica Perez and Kirk Anderson. The changes examined were mainly soil-related. For example, in the community of “Magdalena Peñasco the inhabitants have had to reinforce government buildings with stilts since the land has eroded from under them” (Perez & Kirk 2013: 346). This indicates that the strength of the soil to support houses, buildings, and the community has diminished over time. Another example of an environmental change that occurred in the Mixteca Alta region is “there are areas where the topsoil is gone and the exposed surfaces are red Yanhuitlán beds or exposed white caliche” (Perez & Kirk 2013: 346). According to Perez and Kirk, the white caliche is “a hardened accumulation deposit of calcium carbonate where agricultural production is virtually impossible” (2013: 346). Meanwhile, Hazel Delcourt analyzed changes in the forest, changes in dominance of certain trees species, and changes in land mosaic. For example, she concluded that “changes in both the distribution and relative abundance of European forests trees since the last full glacial interval of the Pleistocene have resulted from climatic change, pathogen outbreaks and human activities” (1987: 39). In addition, she brought forth the idea that clearance of land for swidden agriculture could have contributed to the decrease in elm (1987:39). In regards to the change in dominance, Delcourt examined the tree species in the Iroquois sites near Crawford Lake where she proposed the dominance of tree species shifted from beech and sugar maple to oak and white pine (1987:40). These examples of how certain species were replaced by others demonstrates how human activities like agriculture altered the…

One of the benefits from trees is that areas where massive trees are located are likely to be more culturally and economically valuable. A canopy research discovers that “Where a canopy of trees exists, apartments and offices rent more quickly and have a higher occupancy rate; workers report more productivity and less absenteeism.” (canopy research, n.d.). From this, the benefit of trees is clear, that the presence of trees leads to the increase in the productivities of the workers; therefore, the trees serve as an indirect boosting factor that provides economical value to the companies located near the park. Furthermore, the canopies from the trees provide shades for people.…

El Salvador is the second most deforested country in Latin American after Haiti. In fact, nearly eighty five percent of its forest has disappeared since the 1960's. Today, less than 6,000 hectares are now considered to be primary forest. Deforestation in El Salvador occurs as a result of timber exploitation for fuel. The nation’s high population relies heavily on the collection of fuel wood and subsistence hunting and agriculture. Since the end of the 1990's, the country’s deforestation rate has increased by eighteen percent. The environmental, social and economic effects of deforestation have been nothing short of devastating. To date, more than fifty percent of El Salvador isn’t even suitable for food cultivation. In addition, much of the country suffers from severe soil erosion. The massive deforestation that the nation has experienced has dislodged the top soil and has even changed the climate according to environmental experts. What used to be a heavily wooded region is now more like a desert.…

The next issue is Deforestation in Argentina, which is due to agricultural expansion of soybean. Cordoba has the highest level of deforestation in Argentina. All that remains is five percent of the 12 million hectares of native forest that the province had at the start of the 20th century. And fires that broke out in August and September devoured 40,000 more hectares of forests and grasslands in the hills. The Córdoba Environment Agency which is the government body in charge of environmental matters in the province, drew up a controversial bill that was voted into law this month. The new law bans clear-cutting over the next 10 years, but allows “sustainable logging” in native forests.…
