Mayella Ewell's Power In To Kill A Mockingbird
The book”To Kill A Mockingbird”, there are a lot of characters that have power. One of those characters is Mayella Ewell. In this paper, Mayella Ewell using her class, gender, and race will prove how and why she has power. She has power because of her gender and race mostly. But he class does play a part in why she has power. In the 1930 there were laws that keep blacks and whites separated. Some of the laws were set to keep black men and white women or the other way around from intermingling. Mayella Ewell is an white young woman that is very poor and is abused by her father. Tom Robinson is a older black man that helps Mayella out by doing stuff she can not do. But poor old Tom gets accused of raping Mayella. Tn the 1930, if you were black and you were accused of doing something to a white person, the white person always won the case. Since Tom was an African American and Mayella was white, he was found guilty. As a result, this shows you some reasons why Mayella has power. Gender is one reason why Mayella Ewell has power in the book. Back then and also still to this day, you are supposed to treat women with respect and help them …show more content…
Now Mayella’s class does give her power, but not as much as her race and gender does. The part of power she has because of her class is people feel bad for her because she is poor. Since people feel bad for her, she can use that in court against Tom. she can use that against him because when people feel bad for you they want to help you as much they can. But feeling bad for her is about the only thing people feel about her. He class don’t help her any more than that. Because in the book when they are in court, when the case was closed they thought the had gotten more sympathy and respect. But they did not. In matter fact the people said “go back to your dump”(DBQ doc.e 19). So her class dont help her much in the long run. But she still has power in other
