Deemed as one of the most prolific works of poetry, Still I Rise certainly impressed me and surpassed all of my expectations. Still I Rise is such an inspirational and motivational text in that it empowers its audience to think about the morality of certain beliefs in society as well as empower those who are weak and vulnerable in society. Still I Rise reinforces the idea that racial prejudice is still prevalent in the world we live in today. This poem is exceedingly special and memorable due to the fact that there is a key valuable message from which individuals, from all walks of life, can certainly benefit from. During this response, I will be discussing what I deem to be interesting aspects of the text which include: the portrayal of the…

When Angelou wrote and recited "On the Pulse of Morning", she was already well known as a writer and poet. She had written five of the six of her series of autobiographies, including the first and most highly acclaimed, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969). Although she was best known for her autobiographies, she was primarily known as a poet rather than an autobiographer.[2] Early in her writing career she began alternating the publication of an autobiography and a volume of poetry.[3] Her first volume of poetry Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water 'Fore I Diiie, published in 1971 shortly after Caged Bird, became a best-seller and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.[4] As scholar Marcia Ann Gillespie writes, Angelou had "fallen in love with poetry"[5] during her early childhood in Stamps, Arkansas. After her rape at the age of eight, which she depicted in Caged Bird, Angelou memorized and studied great works of literature, including poetry. According to Caged Bird, her friend Mrs. Flowers encouraged her to recite them, which helped bring her out her self-imposed period of muteness caused by her trauma.[6]…

Marguerite Anne Johnson (Maya Angelou) was born in St. Louis, Missouri on the 4th of April 1928. Even at the time of her birth, when she was seconds, minutes, hours, old, life was working against her. She was born at the mercy of the ignorant, the “traditionalists”, and the near-sighted (racist/sexist people). At a very young age Angelou’s parents split and she and her brother were left in the care of her grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas. Angelou experienced both brutal racism and unshakable faith in community and culture while living with her grandmother and was crushed when she had to leave Stamps and all the memories that the town embodied. At age seven, while visiting her mother in the windy city (a.k.a. Chicago) Angelou was molested by her mother’s boyfriend. She told her brother who, in turn, told others. Her rapist showed up dead a few days after the incident and believing that her words were what killed him, Maya Angelou decided to stop speaking. For 5 long years Maya stayed silent, beginning to reintegrate speech only after she moved to San Francisco where her love for the arts won her a scholarship to the San Francisco Labor School. At 16 years old she became pregnant and gave birth to her son Guy. After graduating high school she decided to pursue the arts and at the ripe age of 19 she married Anatasios Angelopulos, a Greek sailor on a cruise ship where she later sang. Her nightclub/cruise ship singer status was elevated after her marriage deteriorated and she was invited to play Carla and the 1954-1955 production of Porgy and Bess. As her career flourished she turned to writing poetry and lyrics. Her works became known and she soon had four autobiographies under her belt. She has spoken at an inauguration, received 3 Grammys and 2 presidential medals, and inspired many to look beyond their…

If they found him, he would have most likely been lynched. “It was fortunate that the “boys” didn’t ride into our yard that evening and insisted that Momma open the Store. They would have surely found Uncle Willie and just as surely lynched him” (Angelou 18). When Maya was ten years old, two white girls came by the Store and taunted her grandmother. Maya described the experience as “the most painful and confusing experience I had ever had with my grandmother” (Angelou 29). One of the most important parts of the memoir is the story of her experience being raped. When she was about eight years old, she was raped by her mother’s boyfriend, Mr. Freeman. He threatened to kill her brother, Bailey, if she told anyone so she kept quiet. No one found out until her brother accidentally found the evidence. When Maya Angelou had to testify in court about Mr. Freeman’s death, she believed that her words were somehow to blame and decided to stop talking. “I could feel the evilness flowing through my body and waiting, pent up, to rush off my tongue if I tried to open my mouth.
