maus reflection
Mrs. Wertz-O, I do hope that you took the time to enjoy my genre recreation project. The idea was a very spur of the moment decision, and came to me quite suddenly in the middle of Michael’s craft store. My original thought was to create a scrapbook of a certain characters’ life, and make a sort of collage of events surrounding them. Alex Galvin took me to Michael’s the Monday before the project was due, and I spent hours (or so Alex feels) looking around the craft sections at all the different scrapbooks and pages and stamps galore. I picked up almost everything I needed when I wandered over to the woodcraft section- and there it was: a beautiful wooden shadow box. I immediately dropped everything into Alex’s hands and dashed over to it. As I was looking at it I thought, how original… no one else will think to do this, and a brilliant idea formed in my head. Much to Alex’s dismay, I had him put all of my other supplies back where they came from so that I could start on this new idea.
My new vision, to create a memorial to Richieu, definitely challenged me to think outside of the (shadow)box. Get it? When taking notes on Richieu, I never learned much about his personal hobbies or what he liked to do as a child, so I could only put general items in the box. I put myself in Anja’s shoes and really thought about what a mother would want to remember about her son.
The aspect that challenged me the most was to really think about the pain of losing a child, and if I were in that position, what would I want the memorial to really symbolize? I debated on the newspaper article the longest- did I want to relive the year or Richieu’s birth, or the year of his death? I chose a New York Times page from the year of Richieu’s birth, because it is always better to honor the happiness of birth rather than the death day. Now, you are probably wondering why I chose New York Times instead of a newspaper from their hometown, and you bring up a good point. My thought process for

Although controversial in its inception, Maya Lin 's Vietnam War Memorial adequately fulfills the vision of Jan Scruggs, who returned home wounded from the conflict in Southeast Asia at the age of 19, for a monument to his fallen comrades in arms that would "provide a symbol of acknowledgement of the courage, sacrifice, and devotion to duty of those who were among the nation 's finest youth."1…

In this weeks reading, the artwork that resonated with me most were the Etruscan tombs. As an anthropology student, I am drawn to artwork that is unclear in its meaning, and I am especially drawn to burials. I find it extremely fascinating that we as humans have always placed importance on an afterlife, whether one believes in reincarnation, heaven, or any other type of eternal place of rest.…

The wind howled around me like a pack of starving wolves as I entered the cemeteries rusty iron gates. Yet it seemed so wild and chaotic that it reminded me of home, so it didn’t bother me at all, I was used to it. My brother’s headstone was only a ten minute walk away so I let myself drink in the moonlight and the memories the cemetery held. I remembered the first time I went there with my mother, just after Jason died... She led me down the now familiar mud track past the eerie, dancing trees, to the spot she planned on burying him. And it wasn’t until I was standing in front of the headstone that I realized he was gone ; that was the first time I truly cried. I slowly walked down the pebbly path and admired the cherry blossoms that were flourishing around the graveyard. It was a cold Aprils night and it was going to be dark soon.…

All the hate in the world, all the resentment, all the greed, and all the corruption can drive any person insane, yet we can escape this insanity, and we can escape this evil by participating in events like this. Everyone needs and deserves events like this, but not everyone at my age has realised this yet. People don’t see the importance in an opportunity like this, but four of us and a few more do. Once more, I am one of these people, I am ready to take a break from the stresses of everyday life in the 21st century, and I’m not ready to let an opportunity like this to slip through my hands. And that, is one of the reasons why I believe that I should be one of those who lay the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and twisted and complex as this essay may be, it is nothing compared to the human mind. But the human mind can be understood sometimes, much like my writing, and one thing that is understood is that the mind needs events like these to relieve the pressure of one’s self and to keep someone sane, and that, along with every other aforementioned reason, is why I truly want to lay the wreath at the Tomb of The Unknown…

The statue towered over the cemetery. The overwhelming size of the statue made you think that there were things out there that were more important than you, or your life. Maybe, I thought, the idea of the statue is to make people stop and take a moment out of their lives to think about the lives of others. It is impressive to think that an intimate object could make you stop your busy life to think about the deceased. I walked up to the statue and just stared. I was in awe. I looked at what surrounded it and saw numerous head stones. I read the head stone and saw that they were for pastors and fathers from the school. The names on the head stones were names that I have seen before. They were the names that the dormitories were named after. These people must have done something very amazing to still be recognized many years later. That notion in itself is very impressive…

Sixteen years later, we remember those who were lost on this tragic day and we pay tribute to them. Today I wrote “You will always be in our hearts…” on a tile that I decorated which, will be hung up in the babylon center along with my fellow peers. This assignment allowed me to help my friends create beautiful tiles as well. They didn't have any questions because the activity was self explanatory. Many students participated in this activity and enjoyed it because it allowed them to express themselves about a topic that they live through but truly didn’t understand because of how young they were at the time.…

Life is full of unexpected events that leave a glimpse of lingering within a person’s heart; it could be unforgettable history, unpredictable present, or mystery future. No matter what will happen, everything will eventually have an effect which will remain forever or dissolve in their memory. When remembering an event, people tend to reflect about their past instead of heartbreaking events. Notwithstanding, several incidents such as my aunt passing away, my mother’s health, and my friend Diego, both tragically and glamorous, influenced me as the most remarkable event thus far within my life.…
