Matthew 6
Matthew 6:25-30
O you of little faith?

This passage of scripture comes from the Sermon on the Mount where Jesus has left the crowd, and is now in the mountains teaching the Twelve Disciples. This specific passage is Jesus talking about how we should not be worried about our needs, because God knows our needs and takes care of us. Therefore our human anxiety for our physical needs is invalid, because Jesus explicitly tells us that we have no reason to worry. In Matthew 6:30 Jesus asks a question which can easily be mistaken for a statement. He asks “O you of little faith?” So what looks like Jesus saying that you have little faith actually is Jesus asking why we have such little faith? In verses 26-30a Jesus talks about how God takes care of the birds and the fields. In the second half of verse 26 he asks, “Are you not of more value the they?” (Referring to the birds). This is a rhetorical question Jesus is saying that we are more valuable than the birds. We know that we are of more value than the animals because in Genesis 1:28 God gives us dominion over the animals. If God takes care of the birds how much more will he take care of you? Half way through verse 30 Jesus asks, “Will he not much more clothe you?” In Genesis 1:29 God gives us the plants and the trees of the earth. If God clothes the fields, Will He not clothe you more than the fields? It is the same as when he gives man dominion over the animals now he has given us the plants also. This shows us once again that we are more valuable than the plants and animals. Also in verse 29 of Genesis 1 God shows that he sources our food. If you read on though in Matthew 6:33 Jesus references that if we seek first the kingdom of God then all these things would be given to us (food, water, and clothing). Which when we look back at Matthew 6:25, food, water, and clothing are the three things he says not to be anxious about. The main point of this passage is that if God has taken care of the birds, and the

The book of Philippians chapter 2 from verses 1 – 11 gives us a clearer view on how we can reflect Christ’s example as believers. Paul begins the exhortation by asking the questions in verse 1 “if there be therefore any consolation in Christ, If any comfort of Love, if any fellowship of the spirit, if any bowels and mercies.” The ‘if’ stands as a condition. Paul is like doubting if the saints in Philippi were practicing these virtues in the church. Paul appeals to them on the basis of their Christian experience to have unity of mind and heart and put others ahead of themselves. He made a plea for the Philippians church to be the kind of church, the Lord wanted them to be, and try to be the kind of Church Paul had planned for them to be. Since the Christian receives encouragement from the Lord, therefore he should be able to encourage others. Since he is comforted by Christ’s love, he can comfort others in love. Since the Holy Spirit brings the bond of Fellowship to all Christians, they can strive for unity and achieve it. Since in Christ we Christians have found tenderness and compassion, we can…

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” Genesis 1:26 ESV Adam was given the authority over the animals therefore we can conclude that humans are more important than animals. Later on in Matthew 6:26, Jesus says, “Look at the birds in the sky. They do not store food for winter. They don’t plant gardens. They do not sow or reap—and yet, they are always fed because your heavenly Father feeds them. And you are even more precious to Him than a beautiful bird. If He looks after them, of course He will look after you.” God valued humans enough to send his only son to die on the cross for their sins, so that they might spend eternity with him. In addition, he has offered us the gift of…

Matthew 5-7 is commonly known as the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus’s teachings in this passage are often times known as the ethics of the kingdom of God. One particular aspect that separates Jesus’s teachings from all other religious teaching is that it focuses on the inward condition of the heart, rather than just outward actions. This is one of the main reasons that the Pharisees did not like Jesus’s teachings. He constantly rebuked their hard-heartedness, and in the Sermon on the Mount the Pharisees’ attitudes were used to contrast the right motives.…

Even though some may say that there is nothing more to a narrative than what one may see and read on the pages before them, I believe that some stories are more than just historical narratives. For example, in the story of David and Goliath I believe that the example David sets by his faith and trust in God to give both him and Israel the victory against this ominous foe as well as David's words of wisdom to combat the menacing taunts from Goliath are more than meets the eye. In this paper, I intend to dissect this passage from the Bible by explaining where it is located, I will analyze the literary style and characteristics of this passage, and I will give a detailed and thoughtful interpretation of this passage by using the appropriate exegetical approach.…

Another major teaching of this is that our relationship with Jesus is a two way street and that it is, it’s important to be in touch with yourself before going to Jesus. Bartimaeus knew exactly what he wanted: his sight. He reflected on himself and ultimately decided that his greatest desire was to get his sight back. He didn’t just ask Jesus to help him, he asked Jesus to help him by giving him his sight. This specificity is definitely important because it shows God and Jesus that you have thought about what you need and why, and that you aren’t just asking them because you feel obligated or it seems like the right thing to do (Barclay, 304).…

The events that are surrounded this statement fall right after Jesus feeds the 5,000 at the Sea of Galilee. The Bible says 5,000 men, this is not including women and children were fed with a minimal amount of food. After he preaches he notices that the crowd was hungry, with most like the Jews during exile. Jesus fist asks Phillip as a test Phillip fails. He states that it would take at least two hundred Denarii worth of bread to feed them. The average daily wage at this time was one Denarius and it would take eight months to earn. That’s when Andrew shows up with a young lad that had five barley loafs and two fish. Barley loaves, at the time, was considered the lowest form of all. Jesus took charge of the situation by having all the people sit. Here upon us is an important aspect of this miracle that Jesus performed. He gave thanks. Thanking the Father of creation for providing for us. This shows that through prayer anything is possible with God. Philippians 4:6 reads, ‘Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.’ After this Jesus withdrew to the mountain side to avoid the…

    What the Gospels Teach Us

The Gospels teach us sayings of comfort and judgment, stories of Jesus healing people with physical and spiritual affliction, and His miracles and ministry. The Gospels also tell us of the true demands of discipleship, God’s Law, and the Kingdom of God. We learn of Jesus’ life, death, resurrection throughout each of the four Gospels. We are told of God’s love for man, His forgiveness toward us, and salvation. Even though they have different viewpoints, the Gospels share two main points. The first is that the risen Jesus who appeared to the disciples is the self-same Jesus of Nazareth and not just hallucination. The second is Jesus also transformed into a state of existence that is different from ordinary space-time existence. Resurrection is the transformation into a manner of life that exceeds our capacity to imagine.…

Jesus' primary point, of course, is to criticize the scrupulous tithing of even a few herbs grown in the back garden if it is at the expense of fundamental issues of justice, integrity, and mercy. But one might have expected Jesus to say, "You should have practiced the latter, and let the herbs take care of themselves"—or some thing equally dismissive. Instead, he says, "You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former."…

The Gospel of Matthew portrays many aspects of Jesus’s humanity. It was directed to the Jews to show that Jesus was the promised Messiah, the "King of the Jews." When they put Jesus on the cross “Those who passed by derided him, shaking their heads and saying, “You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.(Matthew 27:40)” The passersby who walked by mocked Jesus saying that if he was really the Son of God, he would be able to get himself down. When they mocked Jesus, this showed they believe that Jesus is below them. When people mock others it is when they believe that they are better than them. So when they mocked Jesus, they didn’t believe that he was the Son…

The most important thing in the world is earthly bread. Grand inquisitor said that people cannot live without material things. If somebody gave earthly bread mankind would follow him/her. Even though, there are people who value only heavenly bread; they cannot live without earthly bread, as freedom cannot feed them. Grand Inquisitor said that even if adherents of Jesus will be free. Followers cannot live without satisfying physical needs and they will look for the materialists. These free men will be dependent on materialists, because they do not have anything. Mankind will do anything for earthly bread. Possession of material things brings a satisfaction for people. However if humanity…
