For the example of a ball being thrown up into the sky and then landing on the ground, we can model a quadratic equation to show the path of the projectile at various points in time (projectile motion). That is to say, each point plotted on the graph (parabola) will be a measurement to this effect:
Suppose a ball is thrown into the sky at a velocity of 64ft/sec from an initial height of 100ft. We would set the quadratic equation as (s)0=-gt^2+v0t+h0 and substitue values for gravity, velocity, and initial height to equal 0=-16t^2+64t+100. If we want to find out after how many seconds the ball will land, we can leave the equation set to zero and solve for t, using the quadratic formula. This will give us a solutions for t = SQRT(41)/2 (approximately 3.2 seconds) or t = -SQRT(41)/2 (approximately -3.2 seconds). Because we are only interested in positive values and negative values would not make any sense in this application, the ball will land after 3.2 seconds have passed, meaning that t = +3.2 seconds when the postion is at 0 or ground level; Position (3.2,0) on the

It can give us the projectile’s (ball’s) maximum height value in this equation before it begins to descend. This is simply done by finding the value of h for the x-coordinate of the parabola, and then substituting that value into the equation and solving for k, whereas h is equal to –b/2a in the standard ax^2+bx+c quadratic equation. Therefore, in our case, -64/2(-16)=2 is equal to the x-coordinate of the parabola’s maximum value or vertex. Substituting 2 into -16t^2+64t+100 will give us -16(2)^2+64(2)+100=164, which is the vertex’s y-coordinate. Combining them gives the maximum value of the ball’s flight; the height at 164 feet and the time at 2 seconds, which combine at the vertex point (2,164) on the Cartesian

During the civil rights movement of the 1960s, the methods of the pacifists—such as Martin Luther King—clashed with the more radical elements. Do you think one was more influential than another, or did it take both to bring about change? If you think one was more influential, why? If not, why do you think both were necessary?…

    Water Rocket Lab Report

A model rocket is fired vertically from an elevated launch pad at an initial height of 4 feet at an initial velocity of 350 feet per second. The gravitational force of Earth is pulling the rocket down at a rate of 16 feet per second per second. The formula for, s(t), for the function that models the height of the water balloon at time t, in seconds, is s(t)= -16t2 + 350t + 4. We can determine how long it takes for the rocket to land from the graph where the function intercepts the x-axis because this is the value where the height of the rocket is 0 feet. From the graph, we can see that the rocket lands in 21.886 seconds. It would not make sense for there to be a negative x-value, or a negative y-value since one cannot go back in time, and the rocket cannot go below the…

The data table tells us differently. The balls hit the ground at the different times for all experiments. When the hollow ball is free falling and the solid ball is in the projectile the flight time differs .02 to .01 of a second. When it is vice versa the flight times differ .03 to .01. At no time are the flight times the same. The hollow ball hit the ground 1st in each experiment no matter which position it was…

The position vs. time graphs’ (x-t) slopes represent velocity. Obviously, 7 books will have a higher velocity than 4 books, thus having a larger slope (32.38cm/s2 vs. 55.09cm/s2). The y-intercept represents the place where we started the ball on the ramp. The velocity vs time graphs’ (v-t) slopes represent acceleration. To find instantaneous velocity, you have to find the slope of all the points on the v-t graph and use the slopes of all the points as the points in the acceleration vs. time graph.…

Throughout this extended experimental investigation the theory of whether or not different changing different variables can change the rate in which a ball can fall at and the height in which it bounces at. The motion of a bouncing ball can be analyzed into the motion of before, during and after impact of the ball contacting the surface. This investigation will analyse and break down the motions of a ball being bounced, into seven dynamic stages. The geometric center of the ball will be defined as C, the velocity of the ball will be represented as V and the acceleration of C will be shown as a. To create a fair test between trials it will be assumed that the surface on which the ball is being bounced is flat, smooth and hard along with the ignorance of air resistance.…

The problem I created was based on Hope Solo and her soccer skills. Hope kicks the ball back at an initial height of 3 feet, and a vertical velocity at 20 feet per second. The equation to this problem would be h(t)= -16t2 + 20t + 3. This shows how 20 would be the velocity, and 3 would be the initial height. The problem would ask us for the equation, time the ball would hit the ground in seconds, time the ball was in the air at 5ft, and the maximum height of the ball. In order to find at what time the ball would hit the floor, we need to find zero in the calculator. First step into solving this problem is plugging in the equation into the calculator. You will the need to find zero under the x-axis, in trace zero. The calculator will ask you for left and right bound. The ball would then hit the ground at 1.4 seconds. Next, the problem asked for the…

    Quadratic Functions

Quadratic functions are actually used in NASA. NASA uses those functions to launch their spaceships into space. There is obviously a lot of planning and smarts that have to go into rocket science. The scientists have to take so much into consideration. Like not blowing something/someone up on accident, weight, height, velocity, wind..the list goes on and on. A way that quadratics relate to all of this is by using the parabola. It shows the rocket scientists the highest power term in the equation. An example of a quadratic that is a parabola is: x = c + b * x + a * x^2. That equation shows the distance that something will move vertically when rising against gravity. Obviously important for launching a…
