Mass Shooting Memo

This memorandum serves to inform the effort to aide in reduction of the amount of mass killings in the United States. Since 2013, there has been 242 shootings in schools alone (Scheller). Since the Sandy Hook shooting there have been at least 1,518 mass shootings leaving 1,715 dead (The Long, Shameful List of School Shootings in America). In recent events, as I am sure you are aware, there was a mass shooting in Las Vegas leaving 58 people dead (Yan). The shooter was found with 42 guns in his hotel room and his home. There is a major need to limit the amount of mass killings in our country (Yan). From hate crimes to random shootings, we need to make sure our citizens are able to feel safe going to school or simply enjoying life by going to a concert.
Stakeholders
1. Gun Manufacturers: Limiting the sale of firearms and ammunition could lead to a decrease in employment. Possibly putting some companies out of business
2. Congress: Deciding a balance between protecting our 2nd amendment right while ensuring safety for our citizens
3. Gun Shows: restricting or making it more difficult to obtain guns, the need for gun shows will lessen if no guns are there to be shown
4. Citizens:
In a sense, that does make sense. After many of the mass shootings when they are trying to determine the reason the shooter would go to extreme measures to hurt people a lot of times they will say it was the cause of a mental illness (Metzl). It is hard for everyday people to pick up on signs that may show that another person may be struggling mentally. If we made mental health programs more available, more affordable, and educate parents of certain signs they should look for we could possibly get someone help. It could also be a possibility to make it a requirement to go through a mental health evaluation before obtaining a gun.
