Martin Maloney Legacy
I have been thinking lately about the Dharma I have in my family. As of right now, I am the last O’Brien male in my family. Being the only male left with that last name comes with a lot of pressure. When I grow older I will have to fulfill my legacy, and try to fulfill my families expectations. These expectations range from easy to difficult. The easy expectations are finishing school, do what I love rather than what people think I should love, and give back to the community. The hard requests are creating another successful family owned company, and continuing the O’Brien name and lineage. My grandmother has put pressure on me from when I was young because she knew that great things could be in store for me. My family has had a dependency …show more content…
Many of my family's legacies are still around on the Eastside of Cleveland like the Pat O’Brien Wine Store, the Cleveland Sight Center, and the Grasselli Bell Tower and Library which are located on the University of John Carroll campus. One of the most successful family members in my family lineage, is Martin Maloney. He is one of the pillars of our family legacy, Martin created and invented many things. One thing that we use today is known as the street light, but Martin actually invented that and called it the Gasoline Burner. Martin was very successful and started the financial and philanthropic legacy that my family has continued through the generations. Martin had a lot of money in his time from all of his companies and inventions. He had a house that he called Ballingarry, named after his home in Ireland, and the house actually looked like the White …show more content…
My family’s requests may seem overwhelming now, but they won’t in a while because you have to take everything one step at a time. I have many fears about continuing the family name and legacy but I think most times that I was created for a big reason and raised the way I have been for a larger purpose. I think to myself what it would be like doing something great and continue a legacy, but I also think about what the outcomes would be if they didn’t turn out the way my family and I hoped for. My family's legacy that was created by my ancestors has put pressure on me but it also has made me work harder because maybe one day I could be like Martin Maloney. This dharma creates pressure, but it drives me and when it becomes to much I conquer some of the pressure by staying calm. I know that if I stay focused, work hard and can make something significant out of my life by following my passions, that in turn will keep our legacy going with the family. While my dharma is still being scripted, my family has taught me that pressure is always in someone’s everyday life, but the person with the pressure can conquer it by following their passion, overcoming hard obstacles, and staying

Legacy is your mark on history, and the legacy of Scotty McCreery is found both in his music and in his personal accomplishment. His biggest mark on history was probably his top finish in season ten of American Idol. Though his legacy is much more that that, his personality, accomplishments, and beliefs, can all be found throughout his music. His legacy is his music, it is unique from other country music, and it also had a big role in Scotty McCreery’s life path. Without music he would be an average person with a normal life. His music is what gives him his legacy.…

Perhaps the most important factor in a person’s development is his or her family. Family members can shape some one’s thoughts and can make it difficult for a person to fit in one’s environment. In the novel Ceremony by Leslie Marmon Silko, Tayo’s auntie is an antagonistic woman who is concerned about other people’s judgment toward her and her family. Her unfriendly behavior sprang from her low self-esteem and the anger she reproached because her sister’s unruly actions.…

Alice Pung’s Growing up Asian in Australia shows family expectations have positive and negative influence on individuals. It is normal for most families to want to see their children happy, healthy and successful. Not all parents, however, agree on the order of these three things and not all parents place the same amount of pressure on their children to conform to their expectations. In fact, some parents believe it is best for their children to talk to their parents and grandparents and learn about their succusses and failures, but they ultimately believe that their children should be free to make their own choices in life. Other parents, instead, believe their children should obey them and do exactly what they are told. They hope their children will achieve the things that often they never managed to do themselves. In this second case, family expectations can have a very negative effect on individuals; whereas, in the case of more tolerant parents, family expectation may have a positive effect.…

For some individuals this a difficult topic considering their family, friends, and community are depending on them to make a change. During this comes a realization of a sacrifice that someone has to make. Often enough this is a difficult decision as it requires a lot of sacrifice and dedication. Sometimes the sacrifice is bigger than the individual. My family migrated to America from Jamaica to have more opportunities at having a better life. This has come with plenty of obstacles my grandparents face from a language barrier to finding a house to buy in a good neighborhood to finding steady work considering the both of them do not have college degrees. As time went on they figured out, bought a house, while my grandmother got her degree and my grandfather started his own business. The torch is now being passed down to me to continue the family legacy. I am the only out of all my immediate cousins in college and studying to have a career in the medical profession. I know that most of my friends will graduate and finish school before I do. While I sacrifice missing out on parties and other social events to…

Your family history tells a story of who you are and what your family has overcome in the hundreds of years since it began. My family is a descendent of the famous man who spoke, “Give me liberty or give me death!” Patrick Henry had many struggles in his life in the colonies as well as the beginning of the New America that has contributed to the strength of our family and their hard work ethic in not only work but in life, as well. Henry got his first taste of failure when he was operating his father’s store, which unfortunately had to be closed down. He later started to receive education from his father who was an immigrant from Scotland and his uncle. Later, Patrick operated his father in law’s tavern where he then decided he wanted to be…

The theme of striving to become your own person in spite of parental roadblocks was very evident in the book TDBU in both Mami’s and Papi’s behavior towards their children. Throughout Reyna and her siblings lives Mami and Papi were not present. Even when their father was present he was abusive and thought all of his children were going to be failures. Despite their parental roadblocks Reyna became a successful adult. I identify with this because I am still striving to be my own person in spite of parental roadblocks.…

Families are full of odd quirks and traditions. Whenever my dad’s family gets together for a birthday we have to set up a spanking train that the birthday boy has to go through as many times as his birthday is. We all have our separate ways that we do things, and this is no exception to how families treat a growing teenager. Every family gives their child different responsibilities, freedoms, and guidance as he grows older. My family is no exception. As I have scanned back on the last couple of years, I have found a few rituals in which I was slowly promoted, rank by rank, to the status of adulthood.…

    Byron's Legacy

Lord Byron was a moody, proud, cynical and fierce man who frowned upon society and constantly defied it. We see in much of his literature a reflection of himself. The characteristics of Byron are illustrated in works of writing other than his own. His fictitious embodiment appears in the book Frankenstein, the poem “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner”, and the modern book The Hunger Games. The characters with Byron-like qualities are considered Byronic(or Romantic) Heroes. They are defined as: “A passionate, moody, restless character who has exhausted most of the world’s excitements, and who lives under the weight of some mysterious sin committed in the past … He is an “outsider” whose daring life both isolates him and makes him attractive (Adventures in English Literature 527).” Victor Frankenstein, The Ancient Mariner, and Katniss Everdeen are the epitome of the Byronic hero. They also compare to the classic Byronic heroes Satan from “Paradise Lost”, and Prometheus of classical Greek Mythology.…

In the past five years I have graduated high school, uprooted my life twice, almost died once and somewhere along the line realized what I want to do with my life. Following my first uprooting and near death experience I realized that family is something I have taken for granted throughout my life and need to get back to them to make amends. When I moved back home, I saw just how much my sisters not only missed me, but needed me in their lives. Now that I have left them again I feel terrible, but know what I can do to help them and others. Those events, and many more are where I gained a little more clarity as to what my purpose or life meaning is in this world.…

I grew up being prohibited to a lot of things because I was taken care of a little too much by my grandparents. I did everything as they say. It was a mortal sin for me to disappoint any member of my family. I never asked for anything material as a reward either because I thought I didn’t deserve any. You could just imagine me as this shy and quiet type of little girl, prim-and-proper. ‘Di makabasag-pinggan, like how most people see me. I think it was crystal clear that I should let everything go to the right direction.…

The first significant way in my life growing up with my family is my personality. My parents had an important influence in the kind of person I am now, respectful, with moral values, good manners, confident, independent and determined in my goals. All of these are some of the principles they have implanted on me as I grew up. For instance, my father is very strict and I cried very nights during my teenage years because he didn’t allow me to go out with my friends, but, in the other hand, he taught me how to be self-sufficient, how to be honest, responsible and how to be respectful to others persons. Determination is one of my mom's qualities that it is still hard for me to obtain. She always achieved whatever she proposed to get, and always finished any task she started. For example, she says to me all the time, "don't be mediocre, no matter how long it takes, get it…

I knew that everyone in this world is here for a reason and that death will come to all of us one day, so what can I do to leave a mark in this world? I knew for a fact that what I truly wanted is to live a life where I can impact the generation ahead of me for the greater good. One of the biggest way I learned to fulfill this purpose was through The LEAP Foundation. I have been a part of LEAP for 4 years, but in the summer of 2015, I was offered the opportunity to become a mentor for high school students as a leadership coach. Being a coach has given me a broader perspective of who I wanted to be and the life I wanted to live even after I left the comfort of high school life. The more and more I began to emphasize the principles to my group of students, the more I began to reevaluate and remember the importance of setting goals and defining what it means to be successful. I begin to shift back to the person that I used to be, believing that I was a 10, I was unstoppable. By the end of LEAP week, I got into the daily habit of…
