There are seven different categories of Marriott hotels which are separated by location and type. Each category is aimed at a different target market, with wealthier individuals the target of category seven hotels while individuals looking to enjoy their vacation without breaking the bank are the target of lower category hotels. While all Marriott hotels strive to bring an excellent stay to their guests, the old phrase, “you get what you pay for,” can certainly be applied to the various Marriott hotels.

Within the seven categories offered by Marriott you will find various different hotels that you can choose from when planning your stay. Choices include Marriott Hotels and Resorts, JW Marriott Hotels and Resorts, Renaissance Hotels and Resorts, Courtyard by Marriott, Residence Inn by Marriott, Fairfield Inn by Marriott, Marriott Conference Centers, TownePlace Suites by Marriott and the SpringHill Suites by Marriott. These choices all fall within the seven different Marriott hotel categories but there are also options outside of the above choices should none of them fit quite what you are looking for. You can also choose to book getaways through the Marriott Vacation club, spend an extended amount of time in a location with the Marriott ExecuStay program, travel internationally with the Marriott Executive Apartments or stay in the ultimate hotel, which has twice been awarded the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company. Ritz-Carlton hotels are often regarded as some of the best hotels in the world and they are pretty rare with only 68 resorts worldwide (36 U.S, 32 international).

While there are seven different Marriott hotel categories, certain hotels can be placed in one category in one location, but in a different category in another. For example, in Birmingham, Alabama, the local Fairfield Inn is a category one while Courtyard, SpringHill Suites and TownePlace Suites are in category two. However, in Mobile, Alabama, the TownePlace Suites is a category one while the Courtyard and Fairfield Inn are found in category two. There are examples of this type of situation all throughout major cities across the United States and even a few similar examples in other countries. It makes more sense to look at each type of hotel individually and see what they have to offer since it is impossible to determine exact differences between the categories since most of the hotels land in more than one category depending on the location.

The Fairfield Inn is one of the most consistent hotels in the Marriott stable. This hotel shows up in a wide range of categories starting at one and going all the way down to category five in some areas. Currently there are 535 Fairfield Inn locations worldwide, with 527 in the U.S and 8 international. A stay at a Fairfield Inn includes daily complimentary continental breakfast, complimentary 24 hour coffee and tea, a swimming pool, a whirlpool, free local telephone calls, high speed internet access, cable TV, in room iron, ironing board and a hair dryer.

Another popular destination that is mostly found in categories one and two is the TownePlace Suites. TownePlace Suites are mid-priced and meant for travelers looking to stay for extended periods of time. TownePlace Suites were launched in 1997 and currently have 145 locations in the US. TownePlace Suites are designed to make you feel at home while staying in a residential area. These suites include separate living and sleeping areas, fully equipped kitchens with full size refrigerator, stovetop, oven, coffee maker, microwave and more. Also included in these suites is an iron and ironing board, free high speed internet, TV with premium channels, exercise rooms and an outdoor swimming pool.

SpringHill Suites are another extremely popular choice to stay while on vacation and this hotel is generally located in categories two through five. SpringHill Suites are generally 25% larger than...
