Executive Summary
Sirius XM Holdings Incorporated has been in business for six years as a merged company and their main line of business is satellite radio. Today it “is the largest radio broadcaster measured by revenue and has 25.6 million subscribers.” SiriusXM creates and broadcasts commercial-free music; premium sports and live events; news and comedy; exclusive talk and entertainment; and the most comprehensive lineup of Latin commercial-free music, sports, and talk programming in radio” (SiriusXM, n.d.). “It also provides traffic, weather, data, and information services for subscribers in cars, trucks, RVs, boats, and aircraft (Yahoo Finance, n.d.). Ever since the merger in 2008 of Sirius and XM radio the companies have been figuring out how to combine the two services with different subscriptions and prices. SiriusXM has done a fantastic job developing partnerships and deals with different sports leagues and car manufacturers to ensure that they have the best products and make it easy for the consumer to have the product in their vehicles.
Sirius XM Holdings Incorporated is a satellite radio company that started as a company called Satellite CD Radio Incorporated in the early 1990s. It was not until 2002 that Sirius began operating as it does today. In 2001 XM launched. XM radio was founded in 1988 and was called American Mobile Satellite Corp. As the Sirius Company grew they were not nearly as successful as XM radio. “By June 2003, Sirius had attracted 75,000 subscribers, far less than XM’s 500,000….by January 2004, Sirius had 261,000 subscribers, compared with XM’s 1.36 million” (Pederson, 2005). After competing for a few years the two companies decided to merge and in 2008 the FCC approved the XM-Sirius merger. “It’s being touted as a merger of equals, but in fact, Sirius is buying XM for nearly $4.6 billion in stock” (Beschizza, 2007).

    Sirius XM has attempted to establish themselves according to these five forces. In terms of threats of entry, Sirius XM has really attempted to differentiate themselves from standard radio by providing an abundant amount of channels that provides news, sports and all kinds of music. By merging Sirius and XM radios together, they have really planted themselves as the gorilla in the satellite industry, and it would be tough for another satellite company to enter and take away the customers already committed to Sirius XM. The merge also cuts away any direct substitutes for satellite radio, and they have tried to provide features that aren’t available on other radio types to make basic radio a further substitute for satellite radio.     After the Telecommunication act in 1996 significant consolidation occurred in the Radio Industry, thereafter Radio companies were able to obtain cost savings by acquiring multiple stations in one area and reaching economies of scale. The nation’s two biggest radio company - AMFM and Clear Channel – was just about to merge and in order to do so the FCC required them to divest 100 radio stations. This was an unprecedented growth opportunity for Radio One as 12 of these stations fitted perfectly their corporate strategy which was to „provide urban-oriented music, entertainment, and information to primarily African-Americans in as many major markets as possible”. Since under normal market conditions radio stations in the top 50 markets rarely became available for purchase, this was a perfect opportunity for Radio One to expand and implement further cost-savings through economies of scale, programming syndication, reduction of duplicate staffing and increasing advertizing revenues by becoming able to offer wider audiences and „package deals” for advertisers.
