Case Study 1 – Microsoft
Question 1
Evaluate Microsoft’s strategy in good and poor economic times.
Starting to evaluate Microsoft’s strategy in good economic times we see that they have better strategies when they feel comfortable and not threatened by anybody. In the good economic times, Microsoft has managed to adjust its marketing message in order to meet customers’ needs and requirements. It is well known that in good economic times people tend to buy products based on their reputation, pressure being put by people surrounding them. How did Microsoft get its reputation in the first place? Here are some examples:
1. 1980s DOS operating system for IBM computers
2. Magazine advertising
3. The company’ slogan “Where Do You Want to Go Today?”
4. The beginning of Internet
All these brought fame to Windows and set the stakes very high. Through magazine advertisements, the company has been able to reach all types of potential customers. Their slogan made people thing that somebody actually cares about them and their wants and needs. When the Internet launched, Windows fought hard to have one of the best browsers in the world.
On another note, during poor economic times people tend to set their priorities straight and stop spending so much on products that do not need to be renewed or do not prove to be worthy. That is why during the recession, Microsoft lost some of its own customers to Apple because they did not manage to find a proper strategy through which they could get their customers to keep buying from them. The main problem was the launch of Vista operating system. It cost quite a lot and the reviews were very poor, while Apple came with new products and a new operating system, with a considerably bigger price but also with better reviews that the latest Microsoft product which made customers question Microsoft’s products.

In an effort to fully comprehend just how large Microsoft had become the periodical Microsoft After Gates.     Investigation into Microsoft began in 1991 by the Federal Trade Commission under suspicion that the company broke anti-trust laws and engaged in coercive activities prohibiting competitors from entering or participating equally in the market. “The plaintiffs alleged that Microsoft abused monopoly power and monopoly market structure on Intel-based personal computers in its handling of operating system sales and web browser sales “(The Microsoft Monopoly, 1998). The primary concern of the Federal Trade Commission and eventually, the Department of Justice, was whether Microsoft should be able to bundle its own web browser, Internet Explorer with the Microsoft Windows operating system. In 1998, The Department of Justice brought an antitrust suit against Microsoft. The suit included “twenty U.S. states suing Microsoft for illegally thwarting competition in order to protect and extend its software monopoly” (United States v Microsoft). In the end, “Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson ruled that Microsoft, with its Windows program, possessed monopoly power over a particular kind of operating system” (Rothstein, 2001). Later, the ruling was over-turned in the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals and in September 2001, the DOJ announced that it was no longer seeking to break up Microsoft as previously ordered by Judge Jackson. It would instead impose less of a penalty.…

    By overtaking Exxon Mobil Corp., Apple Inc. became the world’s most valuable company on 9th August 2011 with a market valuation of $337.2 billion1. However, Apple has not always been that successful throughout the company’s history. During the mid 1990s Apple was struggling to stay afloat and almost went bankrupt by 1996. Loss of market share Founded in 1976, Apple grew rapidly with high profits and became market leader of the PC industry by the end of 1980. As IBM entered the market in 1981, the competition between Apple with its Macintosh Operation System (OS) and Microsoft with its “open” DOS (later Windows) OS has begun (see case p. 2). At least one factor which led into Apple’s crises was that both competitors followed different market entry strategies. On the one hand, Apple kept its Macintosh OS proprietary and was not willing to license the software and technology in order to enable other manufacturers producing Macintosh clones. Michael Spindler was the first CEO which turned Apples strategy into this direction – obviously too late2. On the other hand, Microsoft not only started setting up an ecosystem with a lot of PC manufacturers (e.g. IBM) very early, but also a close cooperation with Intel as a producer for microprocessors. This partner network enabled IBM and other PC producing companies to attack the market with very low prices. As a result, the Microsoft-Intel cooperation (called “Wintel”) became a de facto standard in the Personal Computer industry by the early 1990s, which is reflected in a market share of more than 90%. In comparison to that, Apple’s market share decreased from 16% in the early 1980s to 10% in the early 1990s, further down to finally 4% in the late 1990s (see Exhibit 3). We can observe a…

    Microsoft’s emergence as a software superpower was due to the unfolding of a unique set of circumstance and a combination of luck and skill. Since the early ‘80s, Microsoft’s has a good share of the market of personal computers operating systems but the rise of this company has been widely caused by an IBM’s wrong evaluation. In those years IBM was the world’s largest computer producer, but its managers decided to not invest money into development of personal computer technology because they thought that this sector would never been profitable, but only a niche market. When IBM’s managers realized that the market was growing very fast and the company was in danger to lose its leadership, they decided to base their personal computer on Intel microprocessor and Gary Kildall’s operating system, named CP/M, instead of developing their own. Kildall decided to not sign with IBM and their choice fell back on Bill Gates that bought an operating system based on CP/M and made it compatible with IBM’s machines, creating Microsoft DOS. Every IBM’s PC used this program, so MS DOS had a huge installed base, and the other companies who wanted to stay in the market could only develop a compatible software, also a lot of applications and complementary goods were developed for this platform and it generated a “virtuous circle” that made Microsoft the world’s fastest-growing software company.
