Fred DeLuca founded the SUBWAY® chain in Connecticut, USA, in 1965. The company has since grown into a multi-billion dollar business, with more than 30,000 outlets in 87 countries. In March 2011, there were 1254 open SUBWAY® restaurants in Australia. With the popularity of the brand at an all time high, there are ambitious plans to continually open more SUBWAY® restaurants in Australia in the future. More than 70% of new SUBWAY® franchises are sold to existing SUBWAY® owners in the US and Australia. In 2010, SUBWAY® restaurants was once again named the Number One Franchise Opportunity in Entrepreneur Magazine's 'Franchise 500' rankings, based on research and surveys of franchises located in the United States. The low fat menu containing 8 Subs With 6 Grams Of Fat Or less, is popular with customers all around the world. The 8 Subs With 6 Grams Of Fat Or Less range was brought to prominence by Jared Fogle, a college student, who lost 111 kilograms by a combination of regular exercise and eating low fat SUBWAY® sandwiches for a year. Jared currently has a huge following in the US and Canada...known as "Jared's Army", all of whom have lost substantial weight by incorporating the low fat, full taste line of SUBWAY® sandwiches into their diet.
