Marketing Innovation: Firm's Competitive Advantage Strategy
Marketing Innovation: Firm’s Competitive Advantage Strategy
A brief literature Review
Innovation is widely regarded as a vital source of competitive advantage in an increasingly changing environment. In today’s vibrant and ever changing competitive environment which is characterized by high degree of technological progress innovation capability is the most important determinant of firm performance. Although, technological innovations are important for developing new products and to maintain survival strength, yet they are not sufficient for turning any firm into dominant economic player in the market. According to a paper prepared from the Danish Centre for Studies in Research and Research Policy (2005), innovation has become more market driven and less R&D driven following the market orientation of the firms nowadays. Innovation policy has taken on a broader scope, increasing emphasis on “non-technical” forms of innovation, market driven innovation, knowledge transfer and firm’s capacity to capture and utilize knowledge.
The broad premise of this literature suggests that the ability to innovate is a “key mechanism for organizational growth and renewal”. In times of environmental turbulences such as during an economic crisis, the need for innovation has been recognized as imperative to survive, be it a technological or marketing. The ability to innovate in marketing has recently gained in prominence as one such dynamic competence that distinguishes firms which outperform their competitors. Most studies examining market orientation have investigated a direct relationship with performance. However, a few others have inferred innovation as a moderating variable between market orientation and performance. This paper extends this debate by suggesting that the link between marketing innovation and firm’s performance is mediated by the ability of the firm to develop and sustain a competitive advantage. Competitive advantage, for the purpose of

Knowledge Information is "The creation, evolution, exchange and application of new ideas into marketable goods and services." (Entrovation International, 2006) The process of innovation is based around capitalising on new ideas. There are a few different categories of innovation, paradigm innovation is rare and occurred during the industrial revolution, it is not wholly relevant to this topic as it affects the economy as whole. Process and position innovation are relevant, with product innovation it is simply the creation of a new product. Process innovation is related to knowledge innovation, it relates to the way a service is delivered. Position innovation relates to innovative shifts in a specific market.…

Innovation is an essential part of business and making the world go around; it is the basis of economic growth worldwide and can allow a firm to overcome limitations in inputs, maximise their resources, and gain an advantage over their competitors (Popa, Preda, & Boldea, 2010). The capacity for an organisation to innovate is represented by its ability to continuously and regularly respond to the changing market and transform knowledge and ideas into new products, processes and systems to benefit both the organisation and the shareholders (Popa et al., 2010). Innovation can allow a firm to reduce their waste, reduce the amount of labour needed to complete tasks and reduce the need for costly or slow machinery, therefore running the organisation more smoothly (Damanpour, 1991). By being innovative and striving to be better, grow more rapidly, and be more profitable than other firms an organisation can build itself up to be the best competitor in their field and therefore a sustainable business in their market (Markatou, 2012). This can be done by identifying and producing new and improved products that competitors do not have, by streamlining work processes and using the best practise, and by engaging in cost leadership and differentiation (Damanpour, 1991). Markets around the globe are frequently changing and rearranging themselves, organisations should always be continually innovating and improving or they risk getting left behind by their competitors (Lyus, Rogers, & Simms, 2011).…

Scholars also attest that new knowledge and skills obtained through learning enhance firm’s innovative capabilities thus improving the level of firms’ competitiveness and performance (Baker & Sinkula, 1999; Huber, 1991; Keiser & Koch, 2008; Nonaka, 1994). Research shows that innovation is linked to the concepts of generation, acceptance, and implementation of new ideas, processes, products and services (Damanpour, 1991; Drucker, 2002), and is determined…

    Innovation Policy Overview

Innovation policy studies try to understand how important innovation is in our increasingly competitive world and markets. They question government intervention to find the most effective way of helping innovation thrust forward, not only through private investment and subsidizing but through helping and backing up industries and firms which look as future leads for long term economic growth. When talking about innovation we tend to think about invention and creativity, but creativity means making a connection between or combining two elements that have not been previously combined (Feinstein 2006:31). Innovation goes much further in that changes can be made to existing products and uses feedback as a major input. There are also some that believe novelty with no identifiable value can’t have any application. The study of innovation policy shows this is only the beginning of a long and arduous process of implementation of technology, market adaptation, ‘competition vs. collaboration’, and the appropriability of the returns generated from it. To some authors this is even an on-going cycle with constant feedback which enables the further innovative process. Innovation policy tries to understand the context in which all of this occurs and how new technologies and these innovations in themselves are completely changing the market environments, structures and development costs.…

In the present situation of fast economic growth and accelerated corporate expansion, innovation is the fuel of new business development. New products, processes, ideas, and services are the backbone of sustained increases in both revenue and profitability of any business. As more companies see to exploit the emerging opportunities and provide similar services targeted on new markets, innovation is a key differentiator.
