Marks & Spencer
Opgave C
Marks & Spencer is coming to China
Marks & Spencer is a British chain of department stores, which just opened its first store in China. The store in Shanghai is the largest Marks & Spencer store in China.
On the opening day, the Chinese were waiting in line to buy the very demanded articles. There were so many customers that the management had to deny people entrance. There were especially crowded in the food department.
The greatest challenge for Marks & Spencer is if their clothes can be used by the Chinese women, who are a bit smaller than the European women. Still the chain hope to attract China’s growing middle class and despite of the international crisis it still see great opportunities of expansion in China. Marks & Spencer has plans about opening up to 50 stores in the country.

Dear Sirs
As Marks & Spencer successfully has opened our first store in Shanghai we successfully cooperated with you, and were happy to take advantage of your great services.
Because of the big economic growth in China and enormous amount of potential customers, and after the success with our store in Shanghai, we see great opportunities of expanding in China. As a part of a long-term plan we want to open about 50 new stores located in the biggest cities.
Therefore we want to take advantage of your services again. Your primary task will be to employ staff for all of our new stores. It is very important for us that the staff is very service minded and smiling as we want to give our customers a good impression of us. It is also very important that the staff is flexible about their working hours as we want the stores to be open from 9 a.m. t0 9 p.m. Additionally we are not aware of the wage levels and legal regulations.

When Marks and Spencer set the prices of their products, consumers think why they are priced at that amount. If Marks and Spencer source products from under paid farmers in China then this will be considered unethical in Britain as most consumers who shop at M&S want a “fair trade”. Ensuring M&S source their products from fair trade organisations their customers will be encouraged to shop there as they are doing their bit to prevent poverty in other countries.…

While many western managers believe that China’s growth is founded on foreign commodities that are built in China and exported globally, this view is completely wrong. China’s growth is coming from domestic consumption. Apart from major cities like Beijing and Shanghai, some 90 odd fast growing cities comprised of 250,000 or more middle-class families could be serviced with Chinese branded commodities unless the western companies feel the urgency and participate in the growth of these cities. However at the same time, China is far from being self-sufficient, which means many opportunities still exist, but time is not a luxury that MNCs have. The MNCs that plan to enter China should take into consideration the next trends to increase their chances for success. First, rise of domestic Chinese competitors will happen quicker than most think. Second, MNCs must be ready to do business in hundreds of wide-spread locations. Third, companies need to prepare for unprecedented increase in demand. Fourth, the Chinese consumers are very different and have different requirement from those back home. Fifth, product adoption rates are much quicker in China. Sixth, Chinese companies will also go global after gaining strength from domestic consumption. Seventh, Western companies will be on their own when dealing with business issues involving Chinese politics.…
