“Everyday is a great day for hockey.” -Mario Lemieux.
Mario Lemieux is a hockey player who did not let his adversities control his life, but instead persevered and never let it define him. The following includes a brief summary about Lemieux’s childhood, the adversities he faced, how he overcame them, and how he exemplifies perseverance, mental-fortitude, and ultimately, how his struggle transformed him. Lemieux’s childhood was not any different than the average person’s because he grew up in a normal, traditional household.
Mario Lemieux was born on October 5, 1965 in Montreal, Canada. He is the youngest of three in his family. From the beginning of his life, hockey was a big part of his life. From the early age of three, he was already practicing on the ice. At six, he began to play on the Mite Hockey Teams with players much older than him. When Lemieux grew older, he became more serious about hockey. He started to play for the Quebec Laval Voisins in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (MJHL). Lemieux was already being viewed as a person who would become a major hockey player when he led his MJHL team to two championships in 1983-1984. He is a fighter and a hard working person. I feel that Lemieux is a genuinely amazing person, because after he was diagnosed and cured from Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, he never let the fame go to his head. He also raised a large sum of money for other cancer victims and for different cancer charities. Lemieux really dedicated himself to hockey and to the Pittsburgh Penguins. You can tell because even when he was injured, he still came through for his team and won. He also dedicated himself to the sport, because after his cancer treatments, he wanted to get back to playing on the ice as soon as he could. Lemieux was a very hardworking, dedicated, humble, and overall genuine person throughout his hockey
