Legalizing Marijuana is Wrong
Marijuana is a plant that is known by many different names such as cannabis, weed, pot, and grass just to name a few. It is known as a plant that is used for medical purposes as well as for recreational use for people all over the world. There are many different views on whether or not marijuana should be legalized. Some want to make marijuana legal just to save the money and resources that are being used on tracking marijuana dealers. Also, as well if marijuana was legalized it is thought that the tax put on sales would help the United States in this economy. People often hear when talking about marijuana, that marijuana is in fact good and there is nothing wrong it, therefore it should be legalized.
Marijuana is known to be our biggest drug problem next to alcohol. It is thought to be a drug and is not good for your body at all. I know I feel that marijuana is bad, and many other Americans’ feel the same way as I do. Essentially, whether you feel marijuana is bad or good the choice is in fact up to you. By showing the utilitarianism and relativism views on marijuana, hopefully this will better the understanding of why marijuana should not be legalized. It will also help you by showing my personal views, and ethical reasons in why marijuana is horrible for everyone to be able to use that do not need it.
The utilitarianism approach I believe to be on this particular topic would be to legalize marijuana due to it pleasing the larger amount of people in the United States. Looking at legalizing marijuana just to take the easy way out would be a utilitarianism view on this topic. Another view that I will discuss is the relativism view on marijuana and how it is thought to be wrong. A relativist can see as legalizing marijuana wrong except where it is legal in some societies. I feel that the legalization of marijuana should not even be considered here in the United States. Studies show that it causes many problems for people that are using it along with causing addiction.
Many studies have shown that marijuana is linked to mental illness, poor motor skills, and several respiratory problems (Office of National Drug Control Policy, 2010). Marijuana when you get high off of using it you are possibly going to suffer brain damage. The damage that is caused by marijuana to your body starts as soon as you take the first inhales of the drug. Others believe that since alcohol causes more problems than that of marijuana, and that marijuana should be legal. Just because alcohol is legal does not mean that we should legalize something that is so much different than alcohol.
To me this is idiotic way of thinking on this very important and growing problem in the Untied States. We have many accidents and deaths on the road because of driving under the influence of alcohol. Driving under the influence of marijuana would cause very many problems as well. Since marijuana slows down the reaction time, we would be risking lives by having marijuana smokers on the road. The legalization of marijuana would mean having to be comfortable with being on the road with many drivers that are under the influence of all the many effects of the drug. Marijuana is the most used illegal drug in the United States (Office of National Drug Control Policy, 2010).
There is no reason for the United States to legalize a drug that causes so much harm to the human body. If we legalized it we would also be risking lives being hurt with the health effects it has. We indicated that marijuana was a drug when it first came to society for medical reasons. It was not intended to be used for anything else other than for real medical reasons. That is how many were raised with marijuana being known as drug for a reason.
We are also to believe that the...
