Marie Surprenant Essay
Before celebrating her first birthday, Marie Surprenant had suffered more than most people do in an entire lifetime. Her abusive parents beat her unmercifully eventually breaking many bones in her body and severing her spinal cord. Fortunately for Marie, she was taken out of custody of her parents and was adopted by Michele Surprenant.

Doctors gave Marie a grim prognosis. They said she would need constant medical attention the rest of her life and she wouldn't be able to walk or even stand up. Luckily for Marie, her mother, Michele didn't accept that prognosis. Realizing that there wasn't any help available in the United States, Michele searched for help overseas.

Michele found an alternative in India where they were treating Spinal Cord Injury patients with Adult Stem Cells taken from the patient's body. Michele researched it and decided since Marie would be treated with her very own cells, she had nothing to lose and much to gain.

Michele took Marie to India where the stem cell doctors removed stem cells from Marie's blood and then injected them into her spinal cord. The procedure was very non-invasive and safe and the …show more content…
Marie's circulation also improved. Michele was amazed and very happy.

Although she hasn't made a full recovery, the stem cells had a wonderful effect on Marie. These days, Marie is proving the doctors prognosis wrong. She is standing up with braces and is able to walk using a walker. Michele was so happy with the therapy that she is already thinking about a second stem cell treatment for Marie to help her even more.

    Due to recent discoveries, stem cell research will have many future medical possibilities. A recent stem cell breakthrough shows that cloning human organs or body parts to treat patients with injured organs or limb deficiencies could be possible. “The cloning techniques can also be used to grow organs for patients with a failing liver or kidney.” Because the newly cloned organ will be genetically identical to the one being replaced, rather than a donated one, the chances of it being rejected will be very low. Ultimately, this opens up many possibilities of curing patients with injuries, amputations, and failing organs. Stem cell research also reveals the ability to cure diseases. “Researcher Dieter Egli said their work was inspired by the thought of being able to take stem cells from embryos and use them to treat and even cure diseases. Worn out hearts could be patched up, aged brains could be rejuvenated and diabetics could be freed from the need to take insulin, all thanks to stem cells.” Stem cell researchers believe it is possible to cure diseases by replacing old organs with newly cloned ones. This will impact future medical possibilities because newer treatments will be out there and the ability to cure diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer may be possible. Furthermore, federal funding for stem cell research has been limited although by the popularity of its breakthroughs; stem cell research may receive federal funding in the near future.     When discussing stem cell research it is important to obtain some background information to know where the debate originated. “There are three main sources for obtaining stem cells - adult cells, cord cells, and embryonic cells” (Stem Cell Research Pros and Cons). Stem cells are cells that are capable of taking on the form of various types of cells. Research in the 90s began the scientific world’s fascination with stem cells. As studies have progressed, scientists have performed experiments on all three types of stem cells in order to differentiate the stem cells with the purpose of finding possible cures for serious illnesses such as leukemia and even cancer. Doctor Irving Weissman of the American Medical Association states, “Rare leukemia stem cells and cancer stem cells have been isolated that contain all of the tumorigenicity of the whole tumor, and it is their properties that will guide future therapies” (Weissman). Stem cell research opens a world of possibilities for the medical field because scientists are learning how to manipulate these cells into to taking on the form of a specific type of body cell that they could then inject into a person with an ailment of that specific part of the body.
