Mariam's Reputation In Kabul
This quote represents the first time Mariam had ever felt loved wholeheartedly. Love has never been a something Mariam has felt. In the end love has Mariam make decisions that ruins her life, but saves Laila and her family. Mariam never felt loved unconditionally from Jalil or Nana.
In Kabul marriage did not consist of love. When couples marry in Kabul it is usually for a purpose and not to commit to ties of love. Rasheed married Laila to give him a son while Laila married Rasheed to help take care of her new coming daughter, Aziza. The ideal family in Kabul consists of a wife, husband, and many children, but the ideal family could still have relationship problems behind closed doors.
