The dominant colors are sea blue, a tint of gray, and within the cracks, a soft gold. Only a few soft colors are being used, therefore creating a muted piece of art. There is a certain sense of harmony in the vessel because the gold and the grayish-blue combine well together forming a balance that does not allow one color to show more vividly than another.…

Marks use of monochrome blue is what really drew me to this piece. By using only blue I believe Mark has perfectly reflected the mood and atmosphere of the situation through the use of color. The blues seen in the painting are mostly deep or dark blues with the only lighter softer blues seen in the calm waters of the lily pond. Even in the water we see the reflection of the dark clouds above…

For example, the iron that the ferry is made of. This is seen on the walls of the ferry, the pillars, the floor, and the chairs. Because there are light bulbs in the ceiling of this ferry’s deck, the light of these are then reflected on these surfaces by using lighter colors, mostly white, which through this noticeable and shiny reflection along with the long brush strokes add smoothness to these, it makes the texture of these appear like iron. Another example is in the floor of the boat’s floor, where we can tell that there are water puddles because of the texture depicted in them, which is done through the reflection of the lights again made with lighter colors and mostly white, the irregular randomized brush strokes as well as the different colors used to portray how certain parts of the floor are wet (with the use of darker colors) and others are dry. Then there are also the buildings in the back which we can see are made of glass because of again the use of reflection made with different colors, especially…

The color scheme for The Birth of Venus veers towards cool and calming colors; Botticelli ensured that his painting conveyed a serene nautical event. The sea’s water is a murky blue green with Zephyr’s robe almost matching in color. The sea, Zephyr, and the sky blend together in color scheme; this helps to push them back and maintain Venus as the focus. The popping colors are found in the cloak for Venus and Venus’ golden hair that drapes around her body. These oranges and warm tones craft harmony in the painting and complement the cools, especially since blue and orange are commentary…
