“Ugh!”, he grunts from how large the suitcase is. “Will you be able to carry that, Scottie?” she says, her face, worn from time, twists with concern for her son. “Of course”, he laughs. “Okay, if you’re sure.” She says as she opens the metal gate to the front yard. They slowly walk through the cracked pathway until they reach the steps to the porch. Beatrice opens the sturdy door with her keys. “Honey, I’m home!” Scottie yells into the empty living room. “Must you do that every time you come inside the house?” She says fondly. “Of course, I must.” He says as if she should already have known the answer. While they were talking, Alice and Jake, Scottie’s younger siblings, heard his announcement and excitedly ran out of their room and down the beige stairs. “Stop making all that racket!” she admonishes her children. “SCOTTIE!” they yell out enthusiastically. “You’re home!” Alice states, full of wonder that her big older brother is finally back where he belongs. “Well, it’s obvious that I’m home unless I’m an imposer who’s secretly an alien”, He jokes, winking at Alice. “I definitely didn’t miss your humor,” Jake lightheartedly says. “Oh, come on, I tell the best jokes”, Scottie says smiling. “Yeah right, in your dreams”, Jake jokingly teases. “Leave your brother alone for right now. He had a long trip and he’s probably exhausted.” Beatrice gently tells to her…

Addie, the mother of the family, and the driving force behind the deterioration of her family’s world, has a bitter perspective of love and existence. Her internal thoughts, which appear only once in a chapter later in the book, reveal her complicated emotional view towards her painful situation. Her language is dark and cold, and she often reiterates the idea that “words are no good” (page 171). Addie’s voice is of a woman who has only known the empty love of her father, and of Anse, and the hardships of motherhood. Words have never been true to her, and therefore she cannot understand their importance. Her morbid and angry voice is most present when she expresses a want to injure her students, and murder her husband. Her hatred for humanity is clear when she compares them…

In the fall of 1968 in Chicago, Patricia Devine and Dick Vision, members of a church organization called the Concerned Citizens of Lincoln Park approached me to see if I could help them bring people to an upcoming housing meeting of the Lincoln Park Community Conservation Council. At the time, I was still president of a loose knit street gang, the Young Lords. I had recently come out of jail and wanted to get back with my girlfriend and daughter and settle down. During the day I was studying for my G.E.D. while also working as a janitor at the Argonne National Laboratory in an ex-offender program. It was not an easy task to get a group of relatively undisciplined young people to attend a formal, political meeting. Convincing them bruised not only my ego, but my face. But when the evening of the meeting arrived, about 40 young people from the neighborhood showed up.…

Everyone is given the opportunity to take the odyssey that is "life, however it is important to make the journey as memorable as one possibly can. The poem "Ithaca" by C.P. Cavafy suggests that what is most important in life is the experience that is incorporated with the journey, not necessarily just reaching the ultimate goal. It is the quest, not the destination which matters most. This message is conveyed through the poem through the use of allusion, myth and symbolism.…

Half a century ago, four African American college students performed a sit in at a local diner. Soon, many other individuals across the country, especially the South, had joined in. It slowly became an important civil-rights movement. Back in the early nineteen-sixties, computers and the internet were not a factor in people’s everyday lives. Therefore, this big movement was created and spread by word of mouth. This experience shows that change always was and still can be achieved without the help of texting, Facebook, e-mail, etc.…

Gene Forrester is the protagonist of a coming of age story in many ways. First Genes shift from ignorance to knowledge is pretty apparent. An ignorant Gene is led to the tree where he jounces the the limb causing Finny to fall. The knowledge of his evil deed and the loss of innocence because of it really launches Gene from childhood to adulthood. Genes shift from innocence to experience can be expressed by the very same situation. Gene lost his innocence when he jounced the limb of the tree and injuring Finny because of it. He now has experience of doing sinful deeds. What drove Gene to jounce the limb was perhaps to bring Finny down to his own level and make the two equal. The very thought causes Gene to become a little less innocent and a little more devious. Part of coming-of-age is having the experience of the consequences of doing bad things.…

However, the more media coverage and the more conversation students were having around me, the more I knew that staying silent was not the choice I was going to make. It was then that I performed one of the most courageous acts I have at that moment in my life. I went to social platform and voiced my concerns about the accepted ignorance and lack of attention any racial, religious,or gender-based issues receive. Where before I choose to fit in, I now understood that I have every opportunity to change the course of the social environment of America- it starts by standing up for what I believe in now. My views are just as valid as anyone else's. I actively put myself out there to make one happen. Building up the confidence to be the role model, leader, and most importantly the person I want to be proved to be the best personal development that helped me grow more responsible for my actions and act compassionately to those around me. Overcoming my fear judgement from my peers enabled me to use my voice as a tool to preach love, equality, and justice and my choice to be a part of society by bringing awareness to others is one that I take pride in more than anything…
