The first thing that caught my eyes was the colorful and unique dance regalia or outfit worn by the dancers. Bright colors such as yellow, orange, red, and light blue wrapped around the dancers beautifully. The older looking male dancers were wearing the feather warbonnets on the head and bustles on the back. Dancers with striking multicolored beaded and fringed outfits were crowding the dance floor. Some of the female dancers dressed simple with their colorful fringed shawls. I noticed that some dancers even had bells attached to their ankles or dance outfits that they wore. I also was told that the feathers and leathers used were inherited from their father up to their great grandfather. The sight was so magnificent – it made me excited to stay for the show.…

Avedon style is Famous for their minimalism. They are taken in black and white, and are often well lit and in front of white backdrops. When printed, the images regularly contain the dark outline of the film in which the image was framed. Within the minimalism of his empty studio, Avedon’s subjects move freely, and it is this movement which brings a sense of spontaneity to the images. Where many photographers are interested in either catching a moment in time or preparing a formal image, Avedon has found a way to do both. Some examples of this are found on the next page.…

The music of Spanish culture is mostly upbeat and energetic, with a fast tempo. Such as the Jota, a traditional music style that is originated in Aragon, Spain. The Jota is very well known in Aragon but it has been widely spread all the way to the Philippines. This type of music style includes a dance, like a waltz, but with more variations. The Jota music style, has songs that are diverse content with interpretations. Another fast up beat music style is the Fandango. Fandango means “a big fuss,” or “nonsense.” This style has dances that are very lively and energetic. This style, like the Jota, has been spread to the Philippines, and also to Portugal. One of the most energetic, music style is the famous Flamenco. The flamenco is famous for its very entertaining singing, dancing, guitar playing, and hand clapping. With it’s intricate dance moves and musical abilities, Flamenco has become popular all over the world, even all the way to Japan. Another, very popular music style, originating in Seville, is similar to the Flamenco style, the Sevillanas. The dancing for Sevillanas is usually an old folk dance, that is danced by people of all ages and genders. Also, there is the Zambra. To fit the “tertulia” theme, they played pieces written by famous Filipino composers and writers from 1860s to 1900s. Compositions of Jose Rizal and of Julio Nakpil were featured that night. There was also a piano duet entitled Luz Poetica de la Aurora (Gavota para Piano a 4 Manos) played by Sir Petalver and Sir Espino. It was a very playful piece and it seems that the both of them enjoy playing it well. The young Lorenzo Medel also performed. He played a Francisco Buencamino entitled La Bella Filipina. Two pieces of Marcelo Adonay and three pieces of Jose Estella were performed. Some dancers from the Dance Company also danced in some of the pieces to fill in the theme. And singers Roxanne Abuel and Charlene Magalit also performed. My favorite piece for that night was the composition of Sir Augusto Espino entitled “Kundiman ng Langit”. It was so pleasing in the ears that it made a mark in our minds. The chords used were rather modern and it was just composed so good that I admire Sir Espino now.…

Living in this new generation, it was difficult for me to stay focus on the film. Yet, after few tries of diverting my interests forcefully to watch the film, it had some scenes that will run into your mind. The good thing about the film was it preserved the whole Islamic and Filipino culture. The characters used the dialect spoken in South Cotabato, where the film was shot, as the medium language. There were also few Arabic words, especially in their Sallah or Common Prayer is used. Despite the differences between our religions in the film, the quality of being family-oriented of we rural or urban Filipinos was also shown. These are the waking up early of the members of the family to start working, visiting of relatives even if they are far and saying prayers before eating meals. They also paid a big respect to their Abu or Father. Abus are like the head of the town. Another was how they have their own versions of babaylan. During the open forum, the director itself confessed how he paralleled his life to one of the families from the movie. One character is a balikbayan and he was not able to attend his mother’s funeral just like what happened to Mr. Mangansakan. Lastly, it was interesting to look how and when the…

Indonesia has about 300 ethnic groups, each with cultural identities developed over centuries, and influenced by Indian, Arabic, Chinese, and European sources. Traditional Javanese and Balinese dances, for example, contain aspects of Hindu culture and mythology, as do wayang kulit(shadow puppet) performances. Textiles such as batik, ikat, ulos and songket are created across Indonesia in styles that vary by region. The most dominant influences on Indonesian architecture have traditionally been Indian; however, Chinese, Arab, and European architectural influences have been significant.…
