The general argument made by Rushin in his work Give the Kids a Break is that kids need to have adequate recess time to provide them with the break and physical exercise they need. Additionally, he argues that the cut back on recess time and the general “wussification” of our over concerned society is a disservice to our children and our future. His claim that recess is important to a child’s development is strong because he suggests the many benefits and supports them with statistics, examples, and appeals to the audience of active adults who understand the benefits of recess and exercise.…

Though this album has a somewhat new sound and all new music, it very much captures the essence of their older albums, including Crash, showing the beautiful and influential songs that the group has been writing and producing for the last twenty-one years. One new song featured in the interview, “Gaucho” is about “[fighting] for what we believe in” among other important ideas. Other songs such as “Sweet” are written about less pressing issues that remain just as influential. As time has gone on, things have changed for the group, and that…

To live well in, The Laughing Cavalier, by Frans Hals, means to make life an expression of who you are and how you exemplify yourself, allowing one to create their life into a work of art. In the painting there is a certain fluency of class in this painting that empowers the feeling of dignity and nobility. From the ornate detailing on the sleeves to the curled mustache, it is evident that the man in the painting is well taken care or while at the same time embodying his true…

Is a “Fox News Alert” a piece of vital information that must be adhered to immediately or just a metaphor for another piece of trivia, useless information? Before the invention of the telegraph in the mid-nineteenth century, not only would a minor news alert be impossible but also “the news of the day”. America, in colonial times and then on through to the middle twentieth century, when television would come to dominate the as the preferred medium of information, America was submerged in a culture dominated by the influence of the printed word. As Neil Postman writes in Amusing Ourselves to Death, in the chapters “Typographic America” and “The Typographic Mind”, he explores the influence of a print-based culture in the realms of education, religion, and politics.…

Upon their arrival on the pop-punk scene in the early 2000’s, Something Corporate quickly rose to cult fame and notoriety due to their catchy, witty take on post-emo anthems. Leaving Through the Window is a perfect example of this. Although some songs play on some of the more stereotypical pop-punk tropes (the manic-pixie-dream-girl of “Punk Rock Princess”, for instance), it also holds profound wisdom and reflection, highlighted in the nostalgic “Cavanaugh Park”. Although many of the songs tend to bleed together and begin to sound eerily similar to one another, they bear enough difference to one another to remain exciting and captivating throughout its 58 minute playtime. Singer Andrew McMahon’s vocals aren’t the most refined, but pack the…

Purpose is a fantastic album that is Grammy worthy . It ranges from dance songs to " soothe " songs that show his amazing vocals . I didn't like the fact that most of the songs have the same beat which can make the album seem kind of-of annoying . I want to know which song you prefer No Sense or No Pressure ? I did go to his concert when he came to Miami , and it was lit I just wished that he spent more time singing than dancing . I give the album an 8/10 because some of the songs have the same beat . If you want to buy an album that has romance , inspirational songs , and dance songs then this is the album for you…

Though Amusing Ourselves to Death was published in 1985 and The Shallows was published in 2010, both authors tried to inform its readers of the alarming signs. We are blind and not even aware of it. The invention of technology has transformed it users to become flat out lazy. Carr once said, “ Once I was a scuba diver in a sea of words. Now I zip along the surface like a guy of a Jet Ski.” We no longer can enjoy the adventure of scuba diving because it takes too long. We now prefer Jet Ski’s so that we can go accelerating speeds and feel the adrenaline rush. At one time, we possessed a linear mind. We were focused and enjoyed reading without distractions. It’s harder now to sit down and read a book, write an essay, or even focus. The Internet has changed our minds and us. In spending just 5 hours on the Internet, our brain can rewire itself. The human brain contains many things that shape the way we think. Our brains contain 100 billion neurons that have different shapes and sizes. The normal size neuron produces 1,000 synapses, which help us understand what to think, who we are, and how to feel. Neurologists once thought that…

Punishing the Poor places an emphasis on the way in which mass incarceration is a neoliberal creation meant to oppress the lower class. Two very important systems that Wacquant highlights and focuses on are the social welfare system and the penal system. The social welfare system, which is geared more towards women, provides assistance with food, housing etc. The penal system is found to be geared more towards men, incarcerating them at very high rates compared to before the civil rights movement took place. Another very important topic is the induced fear of social welfare amongst the middle class which helped to give reason for the restricting of benefits of public welfare for the poor and the rising stigma of those who depend on the government…

The new album is about secrets, growing up, growing apart, double knots, Christmas Cards, favourite foods, favourite colours and finding your way. The only criticism I can give is that sometimes the lyrics seem too “teenager”, especially for your Monash educated ears. However sometimes it’s nice to reminisce on those moments before everyone cut loose on Schoolies.…

    8. It isn’t your typical R&B album, The Weeknd sings in a falsetto register, accompanied by slow-tempo, a lot of bass, and uses forlorn echoes in his music. I feel the album could be best described as a after party of an after party, or the aftermath of an intoxicated mindstate that confronts the lust, hurt, and over indulgences of the events the night before.…

Music has played a significant role in my life from the time I was born. First, my name came from a very popular singer/song writer Melissa Manchester that my mother really loved. I remember growing up she used to sign and dance to her music one of her favorite song was “Shine like you should”.my mom still listens to her music today. I remember always listening to older music that seemed to have a lot of sole growing up such as Air Supply, Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie and even Marvin Gaye. I have always listen to music when I am happy and just want to groove or even when I am feeling sad and need to listen to a song that I can relate to for feelings…

    Parody In Popular Music

After being questioned about making fun of people, Ana Gasteyer stated “I’d like to say that parody is a celebration of a person’s specific characteristics, as opposed to mockery. That’s what I’d like to say”(Fox). Gasteyer knows that parodies are made all in good fun and are not meant to disrespect or mock the original artist or their work. Yankovic has claimed that he has no intention of creating “serious” music because parodies are meant for poking fun rather than having a serious meaning. Yankovic stated, “There’s enough people that do unfunny music. I’ll leave the serious stuff to Paris Hilton and Kevin Federline.” Weird Al makes parodies because they are not meant to be serious “work of arts” that have deep meanings like songs he has parodied such as Green Day’s “American Idiot”, am song about politics, propaganda, their views for why you should not vote for George Bush, and how the media controls what Americans see and “How” Americans should view certain events, especially after 9/11. Weird Al turned the song “American Idiot” into his parody version “Canadian Idiot”.” Canadian Idiot” uses satirical lyrics to change the song from political views to humorous as he sings about Canadian Stereotypes ranging from small, frivolous things like how they pronounce the letter Z as “zed” instead…
