That dangerous superiority complex can be seen in the short story “Silent Towns” in which Walter Gripp, the main character of the short story, finds himself alone in his town on Mars. At first, he relishes in his newfound independence and the lack of rules but eventually, he begins to yearn for human company. One day, Gripp receives a phone call that he misses and as a result, he dials almost every number until a woman picks up. Introducing herself as Genevieve Selsor, Walter begins to fantasize…

The conflict of man vs. society is quickly revealed from the beginning of the novel. Through a recalled account of past life events, the reader is allowed to grasp an understanding of the life of Janie Crawford. Her life’s trials and tribulations have compelled her into the woman she is, a woman of self-determination who has abandoned the idea of the need for a male presence, as a result of three unsuccessful marriages. Coming into her own, Janie battles with society’s ignorant definition of gender roles and relations versus her personal views of self progression and independence. From her financially driven first marriage to the death of her last husband, she has taken on the flaws of others, specifically a man, to help her search for personal happiness, which has only hindered her progression. Janie once took on the same views as society but due to her personal experiences that allowed herself growth, she broke free of the biased, realizing that the development of an individual identity amounts way more than simply compromising for the like of others.…

The City of Ember is of course where the book is staged. This place is dark and cold but the people don't seem to mind. The only thing outside is the endless darkness and for the longest time the lights of Ember have kept it away but the lights have started to flicker and even have times where they go out for a while. There are three main sections of Ember which the book explores. The pipeworks full of unmapped areas, bugs, the plumbing system(duh) and we can't forget the precious generator on which all hope lies. Then the main neighborhood which contains everyone's homes and the school. And lastly the storehouse and the gathering hall which don't really need any more explanation. The main focus is the plumbing but the division where they spend time is pretty evened out. However the book begins in the…

It was confirmed by the doctors that a couple, namely Jim and Cindy Green, couldn't have any children. One night, they were losing their hope and Jim came up with the idea that they would make notes of what kind of child they wanted to cheer Cindy up. They buried those notes in their garden. Then a storm went by. Later on, a child named Timothy sneaked in their house, claiming that he came from the garden. They saw that Timothy had leaves on his legs, and they discovered that Timothy grew from the notes that they buried. They adopted him and hid his leaves by making him wear socks. Throughout Timothy's life, he made a lot of people happy, Jim's father, Cindy's sister, his football coach, a girl from their neighborhood and many others. Then fall came along. All the leaves of the trees were changing color, and came falling to the ground, and so did the leaves on Timothy's legs. One by one they fell off, until he only had one. He explained to Jim and Cindy that when his last leaf falls off, he will be gone. Then there was a crackling of thunder, the power went off for a second, and when it came back on, Timothy was gone. Later on they found a note from Timothy saying "Never give up". In the following days, all the people that Timothy made happy had discovered a leaf or two in random places, which were supposedly the ones that had fallen off of Timothy's legs, and Jim and Cindy adopted another child like Timothy had told them to, to never give…
