The company image is linked to the go green movement throughout the country. If it can be shown to potential customers the environment is a major concern, it may bring more business. Alternative fuel vehicles are linked to improved air quality, renewable fuel sources, and decreased dependence on imported oil. When the vehicles produce lower emissions, they lower the company’s carbon footprint. The fact that alternative fueled vehicles and hybrids use fewer oil products also helps to reduce the national dependency on imported oil. With the air quality and oil…

After watching the Adventure Time episode “Fionna and Cake” and reading “Berengier of the Long Ass,” the expectations of genders are exposed through the reversal of roles in both of these pieces. The characters in these stories clearly demonstrate the expectations that certain males and females must negotiate in order to expose the problems when there is labeling of certain genders. Judith Butler’s analysis of gender is that it is performative- meaning that nobody really is a gender from the start; after watching the video and reading the text for this exercise, it is clear that Fionna and The Knight expose the misconceptions of gender throughout societies today.…

I think that this Sustainability Report was written in a comprehensive, detailed, and fact-based manner. The report outlines Daimler AG’s efforts to engineer, not only a more environmentally responsible car, but an entire environmentally responsible process for the lifecycle of these vehicles from creation to end-of-life recycling. The report is although, very self-serving as it details many of its own practices and procedures, but does little to compare itself to the industry specifically.…

Patriarchy is “the systematic organization of male supremacy” or the social system organized around gender difference (55). The system of patriarchy has created a set of Eurocentric masculinist epistemological conditions for today, because of this it creates social normalities which determines how people should present their gender and how they should fit into society. Society has made it acceptable to limit gender and create a stratification system to rank statuses unequally (65). Social constructions of hetero-patriarchy that have been formed expect women “to be modest and virtuous, to look beautiful, and, simultaneously to lure men” they hurl these ideas at us through propaganda and media (150). As a woman, I’m supposed to be heterosexual, beautiful, feminine and easily oppressed, we’re expected to fit in a cis female binary and do our gender correctly. Should we choose to break our binary we are sometimes punished for it “through name calling, discrimination, hate and outright violence” (155). Society tries to reject ideas that don’t fit within the specific stratification, I happen to not fit into the typical social stratification. I normally present myself as a cis female, however I’m not heterosexual. Being homosexual is an inequality within whiteness, and it’s not the preferred sexuality according to social constructions.…

The location I chose to observe behavior in a public setting was the food court at the Everett mall on Saturday April 26th from 1:00-1:20pm. The food court is packed with people bustling in and out amidst their shopping. It seems a universal for many to be looking at their phones. While I did make short observations about the mass group of people I decided to narrow in and focus on a few groups of people. The first couple of individuals I observed were a female and male. The female had her hair up in a clip and wore a red summer dress with long dangly crystal earrings and high healed sandals. She had a heavy amount of makeup on and had painted red nails a similar shade to that of her dress. The male had a short haircut and wore a blue t-shirt with ripped jeans, brown boots and a large watch on his left hand. The male maintained a ridged posture while the female would tend to slouch and would bend her knees periodically. Consistently positioning herself in a way that made her shorter than the male she was speaking to. The next group of people I observed was 4 females eating various foods. They each had their hair in a tight pony tail and were wearing athletic clothing (shorts, tennis shoes, and t-shirts with their last names on the back). They were deeply involved in conversation leaning closely in towards one another. The next group of I observed were four males and two females. The males wore either brown knee length shorts or jeans. Each of them had various short haircuts with the exception of one who had his hair in a tight ponytail. One of the females had shorts and a tank top on with French tip acrylic nails while the other had jeans and a deep V-neck cut shirt. They both had their hair down one had shoulder length strait hair while the other had a pixie cut. One of the males had his arm wrapped tightly around the female with long hair she in turn was leaning her head against his…

How is Barbie influencing girls around the world? How many girls grown up playing with Barbie dolls? A lot. Statistics show that two Barbie's are sold every second somewhere in the world. In fact, the average American girl from ages 3 to 11 owns 10. Whenever I hear the song named “Barbie Girl” by Aqua, I think of my niece. My niece was the type of person that loved to play with Barbie. She wanted to become like Barbie and looked like her. She could spend hours and hours playing with these dolls.…

Being yourself and being who you are mean two different things. When hearing the two lines, one may tend to think that both phrases mean the same however, they don’t. Put some thought into it; are babies born with talent, ideas, goals or preferences? No, as an individual grows up, they develop these things and they develop their own personal identity as a result. Today in the fields of modern science, psychology and neuroscience, as well as literature and pop culture, the behavior of males and how they should appear as true men is heavily debated. In “Were You Born That Way?” George Howe Colt ’s main argument is between nature and nurture. He uses his own experiences and parenthood to support his argument by using genetic facts, realistic emotion and the way he gives himself knowledge. John Updike delivers his own personal account in "The Disposable Rocket." Reflecting on the recklessness of his male youth, he describes the essence of being a man with great imagery. He notes that his constant quest for sexual pleasure, the greedy thirst for adventure, and bold carelessness are features that glorify the male body. However, one could argue that men can be much more than that; they can be anything they want. In other words, Updike describes a type of lifestyle which- at least in the 21st century- is not unique to, or descriptive of the male gender.…

Boys' masculinities in three adventure physical education classesby Tischler, AmyContent TypeDissertation/ThesisAbstractThe diminished state of youth health in the United States has been a rising concern over the past few decades (Fahlman, Dake, McCaughtry, & Martin, 2008; Krebs, Baker, & Greer, 2003). Headlines across the nation declare that children in the United States are getting heavier and most point to a lack of physical activity as the cause (Wechsler et al., 2004). Understanding adventure physical education might help to create physical education programs that captivate students so much so that they look forward to participating rather than enacting task avoidance strategies. In fact, physical education might empower students to be physically active outside of the school setting, thus improving youth health. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine boys' masculinities in adventure physical education. The theoretical framework that guided this study was Connell's concept of masculinity. One teacher (Andy) and students from three sections of his adventure physical education class were observed and interviewed for fifteen weeks. The main findings from this study showed how Andy's program and approach to teaching were driven by a desire and effort to decrease the status differentials among students by building metaphorical bridges. Andy's adventure physical education class created social…

Sex and gender are different things, Sex defines the difference of a person based on their body parts and gender is the characteristic that makes a person act in a certain way in order to satisfy the society. I describe myself as person who likes to go out an experience new things, as a person who looks similar to others, but the only thing that changes me is my personality and way to analyze things. I have black hair, and I cannot say many things about my culture because I have two nationalities, I have two cultures and some people describe me as a hipster a person who likes weird things such as music, art, and culture. During the weekend I went to Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico to do my analysis and I found very interesting how women and men socialize, their similarities and differences in places such as nightclubs and bars. In Mexico women is seem as sex objects , when I was in the night club, I saw how women they don’t show respect for each other and something that I found interesting is how they were trying to get the attention of the good looking guy even when they knew the guy was just looking for sex. The behavior in that middle class club was normal but it was similar a competition between young women and older women to see who gets more attention. In the lower class clubs there was a plethora of women who were acting like men starting from the aggressive vocabulary and bad drinking habits, to a point where nothing was important for them anymore, because they just wanted to be and act like and men. While I was sitting around observing, I saw how the gender ethics were totally broken and transformed into lesbianism and other things that I could not believe.…

Gender-based differences between men and women verbal and nonverbal communication impact social work education. Research has found that men generally talk more than women and interrupt more. Women tend to engage in more self-disclosure, display more empathetic behaviors, and be more adept at decoding and translating nonverbal behavior into meaningful messages. The reasons for these differential patterns of communication have long been in dispute. Some have explained the differences through biological theories--viewing them as innate; some have looked to psychological theories--believing the differences stem from cognitive stages of development or reinforcement procedures; some have posited social role theory--maintaining that we learn to act and talk in ways consistent with role expectations for masculine and feminine behavior: and some have looked to theories of societal development--hypothesizing that male dominance was built into the social structures, and that these structures determine communication patterns. Cross cultural communication may explain these gender differences clearly. (Janice De Lange)…

Are men and women that different? Are we really coming from different planets? The book ‘’ Men are from Mars Women are from Venus’’ by Dr. John Grey show us that men and women are so different that we can actually consider the fact that we come from different planets. That book is one of the bestsellers which show that many people ask themselves the same question trying to understand the differences between men and women. But in the film ‘Mars Venus or Planet Earth’; Michael S. Kimmel (who is among the leading researchers and writers on men and masculinity in the world today) changes the whole concept of gender and, argues that men and women are more similar than they are different. In the film, he talks about many issues like making gender visible to both women and men, white privileges, HIV/ AIDS, changes in women’s life. From the different issues he talked about, I choose to reflect on some themes he mentioned like gender role in child care, how culture changes the definition of gender and white privilege.…
